Rasheed

just a simple reminder that every wrestling ref I've spoken with (which is several 100; probably more), in which we've discussed pins, has never once indicated that anything like what's mentioned in the quote ever enters their mind. And on the flip side, I have 100s, perhaps 1,000s of experiences where fans, coaches, and other wrestlers are certain that a pin was missed (and not bashful about stating as much), where the pinning area was 1/4" or so above the mat, or the pin was not held long enough (which is not a factor in college). The ref is in a far, far better position to determine whether or not there was a pin than is anybody else at the match.

I'll also add there are some situations where a ref is almost certain that a pin has been accomplished, but due to how the wrestlers are positioned it is impossible to determine that. You can't call something based on what you think likely is taking place. The ref owes it to the defensive wrestler, and to the integrity of the sport, that they can determine 100% that the criteria for a pin has been met before calling a pin.

Mike Hagerty exiting stage left......

Does anyone know how much he actually weighs? Is he small for 197 or not? Just wondering.

No idea what he weighs but he looks like and wrestles like a full sized 197 to me. Sure hope he can stay healthy because he looks a legit podium threat come March.

NFL officials earn a nice second income making calls based on what they think they saw.

Should get the starting nod for 197. He dominated the scuffle. He seems really comfortable at this weight.

This post brought a huge smile to my face. Comfortable at the weight? After the Scuffle it just seems like an understatement.

I think you have to start Rasheed. First place with 3 pins and a major over four top 20 guys can't be ignored, especially when you compare it to Cassar's results at the same event. A wrestle-off would serve no purpose at this point.
Worse, a wrestle-off is potentially counter productive. It's not about who is best in the room. It's about who will score more at nationals.

Assuming both are healthy, this seems like a straight forward decision. Throw out matches vs. guys with losing records, and here is what you have:
- Cassar: all decisions; losses to Hoffman and Holschlag
- Rasheed: 9 pins, 1 MD; losses to Darmstadt (who's 18-1) and Conel (who gave McIntosh fits at nationals).

If they have similar floors and ceilings, it's reasonable to think Rasheed will score 4-6 more bonus points at nationals.

The implosion part was sarcasm but it doesn’t change the fact that the ref completely missed the call .... also if you don’t think that who wrestlers are or venues or who are the coaches in the corner does not impacts calls (obviously stalling but even with falls) I’d say that’s a naive POV

"Oh man. He's going to make me sit Cassar, isn't he."

It sure looked like that was what he was thinking. Be interesting to see what happens in the upcoming duals. Unfortunately, until the tOSU dual we only face 1 team (Michigan) with a ranked 197.

Still, such a tough call.

Rasheed did everything he possibly could to earn the starting nod. I can't help but think AC would have a slightly better chance against the very top of the weight class--but it might just be memories of that Goliath of a dude gassing out when he weighed 30lbs lighter. I'm glad we're paying Cael pretty well, because this decision just sucks.

Yeah. Also, Rasheed isn't going to answer any question in an upcoming dual that he didn't already answer when the relevant question is how he will perform in a tournament setting. I would think he believes Cassar can AA, but has to consider that if Rasheed can perform similarly and rack up bonus points, he's a better bet. How they perform against each other in the room and how Rasheed performs in duals isn't nearly as telling as how he performed this weekend when the only question is who is likely to deliver more points at Nationals. Glad it's not my question to answer.

Thanks for those interviews! I also loved Rasheed's interview...his answer to why he never considered transferring was awesome. And, shockingly, he said that the coaches actually coach him up! Earth shattering news there. Add in VJ's humility and it was a very fun :)listening!

I mentioned this in another thread. As I recall Rasheed was trying to certify at a lower weight in the preseason. It would surely affect his performance if he was at the same time involved in wrestle offs at 197.

It just seems to me that Cael now has a new set of data points that can't be ignored.

Based on my understanding of the certification process that would not really matter. You don't need to cut weight to certify at a lower weight. Your certification weight is a calculation based on your weight at the time, body fat, and hydration level. So in theory, you should certify at the same weight no matter what you actually weigh at the time. Whether that is true in reality I have no clue.

Maybe he wasn't lifting much in the offseason, to try to keep his muscle mass lower. Otherwise it doesn't make much sense.

I enjoyed that interview. Rasheed comes across as a great teammate.
I saw that interview earlier and came away with a very favorable impression of Rasheed. I saw one last year and he came across exactly the same. In case someone doesn't look at the interview, in response to his weight now he said he was about 10 pounds under, but that might be after practice weight. He still looks lean for a guy that went up 32 pounds over the past 2 years! Seems like a real character in humble, friendly way.

Interesting that he claims (after the tournament) that he was "about 10 pounds light". I think for the guys who are naturally quite lean that being able to eat a normal, quality diet is a huge benefit come tournament time. I haven't seen enough of Rasheed this season to know how he looks on top when he's not pinning you. Anyone have a reasoned opinion about what his mat wrestling abilities are, particularly versus Cassar or Cutch?

believe what you want. my experiences in officiating, which I'm pretty confident is significantly more than yours or most others on this board, is that the factors you mention have little to no impact on experienced refs.

wait ... you actually believe that Dan Gable yelling "stalling" while mat-side in Carver Hawkeye didnt impact an official.... seriously?

or the Perry/Evans National Semifinals match .... you dont think it was impacted by who it was and the situation (defensive pin & NCAA Semis or quarters) ?

i get that an official will never say it influences the calls but to think it doesnt,
yeah, im not going to agree with that

I think Rasheed earned his spot to start! what an impressive and exciting tournament against good opponents. He majored 2 guys and there was plenty in the tank.
I say this with great admiration...a forum member with 17 years longevity and 33 posts puts you in the top percentile of “Lurkers”.
I see “Lurking” btw as a lost art in which the participant listens (reads) more than he or she blabs (writes). There have been times when I have aspired to be a better lurker (read, keep my mouth shut), but sometimes lack the discipline. As a Lurker wannabe, I therefore write this to you whilst crowning you “King of the Lurkers”.

Yes, I believe that has been studied and is where most of the “home field advantage” in sports comes from. I hope all the referees out there have read these studies. Btw I admire the Zebras, that’s a tough job and it’s difficult to be perfect at all things at all times. I’m guessing the majority of folks who complain about them have never walked in those shoes.

im not saying its easy to be an official, but to say those factors have no impact is crazy IMO ... across all sports, not just wrestling

In the book Scorecasting, the author pretty much proved that the home team wins more because the referee tends to see plays the home team's way. Not intentional but more the result of human nature, this happens in every sport, especially with large crowds.

Definitely can see Gable getting a stall call in a large Carver-Hawkeye crowd. Same as I can see any prominent coach in any sport getting a call here and there.

Carver Hawkeye has always brought some home cookin' no matter the official. Mike Allen was probably the worst. He might as well have worn a black and gold striped shirt.
