Really bummed to be going back to SC and no Skeller

Where would you go instead? The boys now go to Champs, but I'm guessing it has comparatively little character.

Wait. Weren't we told that it would reopen on the same spot exactly like it used to be? But, the Mustard Family said so!

Where are all those folks who were defending the Mustardos here, and reassuring us about how much like it used to be it was gonna be?

Oh wait. That was what they told us for a little while, then they switched off to "you dont own the property like the House of Mustard, so.....STFU."

When your exalted St. Duke gutted the joint, it was bound to cause some delays. But keep on cursing the evil Mr. Mustard people if it makes you feel better.

So, it's still gonna come back just like it was, except better? Oh goody. Roll over and tell Col. Mustard thanks for me.

Condiment-people™️ are such great businessmen that they chose not to understand that, in the absence of an agreement that directs otherwise, the tenant owns everything that’s not part of the structure...

That’s Business Law 100

Can’t blame Duke at all... hope those booths et al. show up somewhere else downtown... never will replace the real home, but it will outlast anything the Shitlockers open

Rathskeller, warts and all, was a State College institution that should have been left alone.... Mustard People eager to behave like small-town real estate bigshots... their lust for chest-thumping and dollar-signs sullied a place sacred to many of us Penn Staters... stupid

You can add skeller-like character to any bar, just ask the waitress to not clean off your table from the previous guest, order a cheap terrible rolling rock, and then go piss all over the bathroom.

If you think that’s what the Skeller was about, then you can go enjoy your pint of exotic Blue Moon and be the life of the party over at Applebees*

what was factually wrong about panda's post? Because that is exactly how I remember the skellar, and I would guess I was there on average 3-4 times a week after turning 20 (nice to have a brother 10.5 months older) until I graduated

I loved the place, but things change

-Rolling Rock died years ago, you can't get it anymore
-they hadn't changed the mop water in that place since 1970
-if you don't own the building, you don't own the building

Loved the skellar, but The Brewery was my go to. Check it out LB.

I still drink 33s. And I yearn for the Skellar.

If you think blue moon, made by coors, is exotic... I guess you might think that crapplebees is a decent restaurant too.

Why would anyone think that the skeller was "about" being dirty and smelling like piss? Such a notion is ridiculous, and you would see so if you removed your emotional attachment. Whatever it is you liked about the skeller, the good has to be taken with the bad. For me the good wasn't enough to overcome the bad.

I frequented the Phyrst the most, and the Skellar was my afternoon bar. I always tried to go to bars with live music and hit most of them while a student. The Brewery, Scorpion, Shandy Gaff, and Rego’s (the closed Darkhorse). Occasionally went to the Whistlestop and Zenos, mostly with the grad students I did research work with. Never went to Mr. C’s as I absolutely hated disco and still do. Nickelodeon Night at Gatsby’s was absolutely great as well. Live music and a pitcher of beer for $3.20 and the second for 5 cents. Still will miss the Skeller as it was our go to place for an afternoon beer or two at the arts festival.

Rolling Rock was made in Latrobe, the swill they make now is made in New Jerksy

A friend I often discuss what the best “blue collar” beer is and Rolling Rock wins every time. It still has a crispness others don’t quite achieve.
I like the Rock.

Ah, the Brewery. I have fond if foggy memories of Pitcher Wars on Fridays (do they still do those?). On one rainy Friday, my buddy Mike and I were taking in some Pitcher War goodness by standing shoulder-to-shoulder & chest-to-back with 250 of our "closest friends." IIRC the trick was to split about 5 minutes before the special ended to avoid being crushed at the exit, which was the good advice that we failed to take on this particular Friday. So, of course, we then spent far too long surfing through the heavily beer-muscled mass to grab a Loop toward a party across town.
Sitting on the Loop ...
Mike: You thirsty?
Me: ... Uh, sure.
Like magic, Mike produces a full pitcher & 2 pilsner glasses from under his raincoat.
Me: [dumbfounded look] Seriously?
Mike: Yup.
Me: Cheers.
To this day I have no idea how he smuggled out a full (full!) pitcher and 2 glasses through that mob, but it was indeed a lovely Loop ride.

I remember a few epic nights at the Brewery myself

It hasn't reopened yet, so it's a little bit early to be bitching about how it's not at all like the Skeller. Why don't you wait until you see what it's actually like before you go on your rant?

The Darkhorse hasn't closed yet. They plan on being open until July (my guess would be through Arts Fest).

Earth to Lar: it will not be the Skeller*

Mustard people killed it to make a buck

So, we are officially back to the original story?

I never understood the fascination with the Skellar. It was a basement college bar. So was Shandygaff, Zeno's, and the Brewery along with several other's that became extinct that only are known by alumni from the 70's and 80's. You walk around both PSU campus and downtown and the difference today versus 25 years ago is drastic everywhere. Hell, Old Botany is getting a facelift for some reason so is no longer the oldest building on campus. The Elms are at about 50% of what they once were. There isn't even a tree replanted next to Old Main where the 100+ year old one was cut down a couple of years ago. Change sucks sometimes, but it happens. There are a whole lot of things changes that are worse than the Skellar getting remodeled and upgraded to 21st century.
