Penn State enters Friday morning's round tied with a tournament-high five quarterfinalists. Two more wrestlers are alive in the consolation bracket. After day one, during which Penn State won 12 of 14 total bouts, Penn State is in fourth place in the team race.

My day one recap with comments from Cael Sanderson, Matt Brown and Matt McCutcheon at the link below.

Nice job, Tim. Some thoughts on tomorrow's matches ...

125:
Conaway vs. Scott Parker (Lehigh)
- Parker has been tough this year. They met in the Lehigh dual in November, with JC winning 4-3. In that match they were scoreless after the 1st, Parker got a reversal from bottom in the 2nd. In the 3rd, JC escaped after 45 sec, and got a TD. Parker got a late esc for the final score of 4-3, JC

133:
Gulibon vs. Ryan Taylor (Wisky)
- These 2 battled in the B1G semis. Taylor won 7-5 SV. Jimmy can beat Taylor, but he's going to have to avoid mental mistakes that have plagued him at times. Taylor has been on a roll

149:
Beitz vs. Alec Pantaleo (Michigan)
- These 2 battled in the consolation semis of the B1G tourney, with Pantaleo winning 3-1. In the regular season, Beitz defeated Pantaleo by the score of 6-4, getting the victory with a last second TD. Not a lot of separation between these guys in their prior meetings this season.

174:
Brown vs. Zach Epperly (Va Tech)
- These 2 met in December in a dual match. Brown had the lead in the match, but Epperly scored a late TD to tie and rode out Brown to send it to OT. Brown shot in SV, but Epperly scored a TD on a counter. Brown has to want a little payback, but Epperly can be dangerous.

184:
McCutcheon vs. Kenny Courts (Ohio State)
- These 2 met in a dual in January. It was scoreless after the 1st, though Courts was the aggressor. Cutch led by 1-0 after the 2nd, though Courts was getting in deep. In the 3rd, Courts got an esc, then got a TD, and then rode Cutch for over 1 min to get RT. Cutch got the esc to make it 2-3, but couldn't get a late TD, and lost 2-4 with RT.

197:
McIntosh vs. Conner Hartmann (Duke)
- these 2 did not meet this year. McIntosh has been on a roll of late

285:
Lawson vs. Nick Gwiazdowski (NC State)
- Certainly the toughest matchup a PSUer faces in tomorrow's bouts. Gwiz is the #1 seed at 285, and the returning champion. LawDog has the athleticism to stay with Gwiaz, but he'll have to bring his A game to the match.

Tom

our guys wrestled really well today. Shame Jordan and Zack couldn't pull it out as they now have a really tough road to hough... meaning their matches to get into AA is going to be tough. I really think Zack would be in the semi's if he would have won this eve. Here is to the same energy tomorrow!! Hopefully JG get's revenge and JL executes the upset!

Re: Nice job, Tim. Some thoughts on tomorrow's matches ...

Realistically we may win 2 today, but hope I am wrong and we do better.

Looking at the consolation bracket, Conaway has a much easier path to AA then Beitz.

Guys in Jordan's section up to medal rounds: Parker (NS), Martinez (NS) or Lizak (NS) and Terao (NS) in projected round of 12.

Zach, on the other hand: Pantaleo (6), Sorenson (4) or Ream (NS) and Mastriani (7) in projected round of 12…...Brutal

Also, if Lawson loses this morning, he is projected to face Mellon (12) in round of 12. That win over Krolls was big; path would of been much harder with a loss.
