The new transfer rules really opened the floodgates. At first I thought the transfer rules would help the big dogs but now I think it will help the smaller schools.

Going forward I think teams will have to adjust their recruiting. I don't think we can afford to recruit projects. They will be gone by the time they develop. More freshman will be needed to play. No point redshirting if they are gone after 3-4 years. I think the coaches will have to process kids sooner.

What “new transfer rules?” As far as I know there’s nothing changed from last year. Grad transfers have been around for, what, five years?

The fact that a player does not need to be granted a release by his school, which often came with a list of 'you can't go here though' quantifiers.
They say they are looking to transfer, and the school has a set period to get them listed on the transfer portal.

They can't tell the player "well OK you can transfer, but not to any one in our conference, or other D-IA programs in state, or anyone we play over the next 2 seasons, or to any school where your position coach or coordinator may have went to once we fired them" like in the past.

It's free agency, nothing more, nothing less. Not playing here, I'll go there. For every 10-15 kids that transfer, 1-2 may may an impact somewhere. It's not like the best kids on the rosters are bailing. Not just at PSU, pretty much everywhere.

I think this is true. Generally schools like PSU will be recruiting thinking they have players for 3 years including freshman year. So redshirting is pointless. You will really need a lot of your freshmen to play in order to fill out special teams and provide depth.

What remains to be seen is how much schools like PSU will draw from the transfer pool -- maybe to pick up slower-developing players like OL and DL. PSU already has a history of taking some Juco OL and now they'll be looking at grad transfer OL.

It certainly will hurt the better programs and benefit the weak. Penn State is getting hammered this year. I'm from western Pa. and haven't heard of one Pitt player looking to leave and they'll probably bring in a few to fill holes. This is like Christmas for Narduzzi. Recruiting high school players has become less important.

I don’t agree with the blanket statement that this is bad for big schools. It may be a net negative for them, but it also helps them open spots for new blood, instead of the days where a ‘ship was locked up for 5 years, regardless of a player’s contribution level. Contribute or move on...

What new blood? Early signing period is over. Most of the talent is off the board. There is also a 25 scholly limit. I read there is 1000+ D1 players in the portal. A lot of players are on the move but most of them are moving down not up. PSU is not going to replace 10 4 star players. It will hurt the depth of the top teams. There will be some exceptions.

Kids switching schools after 2 or 3 years can't help graduation rates.

Ten four star players? I see two. JJ and Wade

I think we currently have 73 scholarship players for 2019.

12 are seniors and 11 are juniors. That leaves 50 underclassmen + any new recruits.

First off, what team with a pulse wants any of the gems the Duzz recruits out of high school. The whole staff is a joke when it comes to recruiting, so any transfers he picks up will just be rejects of middling to poor teams.
