Football REPORT: Penn State's Andy Kotelnicki to interview for West Virginia job

I've been critical of AK for bringing in Beau (and other QBs) to ruin the flow of the offense, and for very questionable, boring, ineffective playcalling inside the red zone (especially inside the 5) ... but overall, he's obviously been a boon to this offense.

Why can't we keep nice things? Can we at least count on AK having trained a protege, and retaining and elevating that guy to OC if AK does leave for an HC job? I just want some positive continuity.

We saw that in the last few games and bowl last year. I doubt AK has trained a protégé. We'll be hiring outside, but in this era that's easily a positive.

We may not love it every week, but AK has gotten the most out of our offense as anyone could have expected.

Does he want this? I can see it being a solid hire for WVU, but this is a dead end job these days. Where do you recruit? And the BIG12 will be relegated to below power 2 in a few years. He could do much better if he waits, just ask JoeMo.

Have we had an OC for over 2 years under JF?

Yes, only one: Mike Yurcich who was fired during his 3rd year on the job.

Andy may want to consider that the grass is not always greener in a head coaching job. Joe Moorhead lasted two years as the head guy at Mississippi State. Ricky Rahne's record is much less than spectacular at Old Dominion.

You know, PSU is playing for a championship in 6 days. Why the F shit likes leaks is disgusting. It's sour grapes from WVU. Kotelnicki should tell WVU to F off after this BS. As someone noted above, he can do better.

These coaches know you have to make a move while you are a hot commodity and will make a much better head coaching salary. Even if it's only for 2-3 years, they will always have a chance to go back to a head coordinator position. (like Tom Allen)

Bush league shit From a bush league program. Now I wish we would have hung 60 on them. And like I said, interviewing doesn't mean taking.

I think his staying or going depends on what he thinks our O will be like next season, and the offer made. He should look for something at one of the big 2 conference schools with a chance to win or wait.

It's untelling at this point. Allar is the most likely gone as is Singleton. Warren definitely gone. Other than Fleming, WRs will probably be invitation only and he could push for 2-4 new WRs out of the portal. Allen might be back. OL should return everyone but Dawkins and Wormley.

I don't think talent is a problem. It's a matter if he's happy with how this year went and or what his next goal is.

I would not be surprised if Allar and Singleton come back. Allen would not be drafted, so I would guess that he will return.

I'm the opposite; I'd be surprised if they did return. Allar will flourish at work outs and the combine. He's erased almost all doubts from his '23 season. He's protected the football until he didn't have a choice as well. Teams see him targeting Warren primarily, checking down to his RBs, or running for positive yards as all huge plus signs.

Singleton will go. RBs having a resurgent year. He's also been injury prone. The worst thing that could happen is he miss the combine. What he lacks as a RB will keep teams from going R1/2 for him, but he's a pro style back. His receiver ability is very important.

Allen has had a weak year and just doesn't run fast enough for a high draft grade. Whenever he goes, it's going to be a risk. He probably should come back and lead Wallace, Martin, and Smith. If he does, we probably see one of them 3 Portal out a la Montgomery.

Drew won't be 21 until March, and his family seems to value education. Same with Singelton, except he will turn 21 in January. The most successful NFL rookies are closer to 23. I just have a feeling that both want to put more on tape and maximize their draft position. And we don't have a big history of redshirt sophomores leaving, which is what they both would have been.

I get the whole career ladder idea, but I really think any OC or DC should give at least 2 years to a team that hires them to a big contract. The one and done thing seems just a tad too mercenary.

They are true juniors I believe. No RS.

I'd love to have them back to be honest, but I just don't see it.

Right, which means true Junior is the same thing as a redshirt Sophomore in terms of age, and so neither is likely very to graduate before December 2025.

Valuing an education isn't a reason to return. He can make his money and still get a degree assuming he doesn't have done in 3 years.

I think it's selfish on us to want them back. Both are ready.

They can be fired within 2 years so it's hard to say they can't leave. We all knew AK tool this job to increase he's odds at being a HC sooner than later. 1 year isn't surprising if he does go.

We have a lot of unknowns next year if he returns. It would be risky for him to stay

If offered, I believe Kotelnicki would jump at the opportunity to be a head coach at a power 4 school. There is zero risk and only an upside from a financial perspective.

In today’s college football, P4 head coaches are given big contracts typically inclusive of obscene buy out provisions.

Examples:
- Tom Allen received $15.5 million from his Indiana buyout when he was fired.
- Recently fired Purdue Football HC Ryan Walters will receive $9.33 million in his buyout deal.
- The currently contested buyout of former Michigan State HC Mel Tucker is $75 million.
- Former Texas A&M HC Jimbo Fisher’s buyout was $75 million.

In summary, there is so much money in college football that any P4 job can be lucrative regardless of performance on the field. Again, there is zero downside for Kotelnicki.

AK’s name has already been named on a bunch of Head Coach openings. His name is one mentioned for the UNC job. Get used to it!! I think Nick Saban had like 7 offensive coordinators during the 11 years that Franklin has been at PSU. Sign of the times!!

Likely Using it to leverage substantial OC raise at Penn State. — Would be absolutely shocked if he chose WVU… believe he will have better opportunities in a year or two if he wanted to be a HC. —I’d also be surprised if Franklin ( prior to hiring) didn’t discuss/expect at least 2 years at OC before jumping.

While I hope Drew returns, I’m not at all concerned about Beau potentially being under center next year.
