Richest Universities in the country....

How much of the PSU endowment is being used for need based academic grants-in-aid? It's been discussed here at length but tuition is insanely high for a state related university. Below is a sentence from the Penn State web page setting forth the mission. Unparalleled? Are they being serious??

"As Pennsylvania’s land-grant university, we provide unparalleled access to education and public service to support the citizens of the Commonwealth and beyond."

I realize part of the problem is the state only providing a small percentage of the operating budget but the university administration doesn't seem to view cost containment as a priority.

I also wonder what the endowment would be today if the 2011 BoT hadn't overreacted and smeared Joe Paterno thus alienating many wealthy alumni and friends of the university.

According to the budget for the 2018-19 academic year, PSU will provide just under $76mm in student aid. Total tuition and fees: just under $2bn.

Unparalleled = no other state university is as difficult to access as ours.

Most psu money is directed. Meaning it was donated with a specific cause and has to be used for that cause.

It has been a fundraising issue for the school.

Who told you that?

How does that differ from other institutions?

Well I have a scholarship. I was told that at a dinner with a then primary fundraiser at PSU.

Probably 6 years ago.

Other institutions dont allow it as much as donatuons are a way to get the kids in.

I doubt that a development officer at any university could definitively classify what takes place at other universities. These people talk to each other and lie or make shit up. They also make shit up when they talk to potential donors.

As far as what universities allow and don't allow, uh uh. If a donor wants to give for a specified purpose, his money isn't being turned away unless the stipulation, most commonly the donor's name, would prove to be embarrassing to the school. As for donations that provide an entree for a child into a school, relatively there aren't that many of them. We're talking serious money that most people simply don't have, though there probably are some cheap whores out there.

I dont disagree with much of what you said.

Except while yes Harvard turns no money away, directed money is discounted in terms of getting your legacy son or daugther in. So it changes things.

PSU was just eager for money of any variety.

At a Penn State bot meeting, when someone asks, “Where’s the Dip Shit?”, how many say, “Here I am!”? Or do they all respond, “barren was just here a minute ago”?

If Joe Paterno had never coached here this would be a much different university. We would not have had the football success, we would not be in the BigTen, and the endowment would be more in line with NC State which is 1.3 billion. I know others may see it differently and I don't intend to argue the point. You asked for thoughts. Those are mine.
Correctamundo!

this thing called oil in Texas makes a lot of mulit-millionaires.

I believe the Texas endowment is for all the institutions in the state system: a government entity of the state of Texas that oversees 14 educational institutions throughout the state including eight universities and six health institutions.

There is no single "state system" in Texas. There are six (UT, TAMU, TTU, UH, UNT, and TSU) independent systems that incorporate most of the public schools of higher education in the state. Each has its own distinct endowment, though entities within a system can and do have assets earmarked for their sole use.

The Permanent Fund has massive landholdings in West Texas. A lot of it is checkerboarded alongside rail lines with adjoining parcels owned by Texas Pacific Land Trust. Pretty neat dealing with those guys down here. Good stewards of the land
