RIP Pete Rose

He should be inducted into the Hall of Fame tomorrow
RIP Pete
It's such a travesty that he was never allowed into the HOF. Without Pete Rose in it, I think it's kind of hollow or incomplete. I think inducting him posthumously is just further insult. If they weren't willing to acknowledge his greatness while he was living, just let it go.

The best players are not in the hall, while some mediocre and blatant cheaters are.

As a kid I disliked The Big Red Machine. They were a mini dynasty. I especially didn't like Rose....until he became a Phillie and lead us to the 1980 Series title.

Can still hear the call by Vin Scully on what I believe was the penultimate out: " Foul ball down the first base line...heading towards the dugout...Boone drops it ....but Rose caught it!"

A good buddy of mine sat alone w Pete at some off off off the Strip casino about 10 years ago. It was very early in the morning and they were betting horses back East. They barely spoke- but my friend said it made him sad.

I got his autograph a few times including on a ball and inside a book about that Series win by Hal Bodley.

RIP Charlie Hustle.

Yeah, I can understand/respect that approach. I still think Rose (like Bonds) has to be in the HOF or it's not worth having a HOF

I guarantee you that the Phils somehow gag that series if Pete isn’t hustling to back up Boone. Such a huge play and no one else makes it I don’t think.

He buried the choker tag that team had.

MLBs influence over the Hall of Fame is as big of a joke as the sportswriters. Harold Baines is in the Hall of Fame. Dave Parker is not. Why? Because Jerry Reinsdorf says so and the sportswriters are small minded, spiteful hacks. Pete Rose is barred for gambling while the “industry” (owners) partner and invest in gambling companies and look the other way when their premier star player is exposed as a gambler. Bonds, Sosa, McGwire and the Astros were cheaters that should be denied. Rose was no saint but he was a helluva ball player and should be in the HOF.

I have long believed baseball’s plan is to wait until Pete’s death to end his suspension. The “powers that be” want to deny him the pleasure of his Hall of Fame induction.
I now expect him to be in the Hall relatively soon.
The ‘roid cheaters may all be looking at a similar fate.

I don’t think we’ll ever see someone play the game like Pete.

Seems everyone had a Pete in Vegas story. I’ve only been to Vegas once as it’s not my scene, but was at the Mandalay Bay about 6 years ago for a work conference. I was up early ish, and was walking through the adjoining mall half paying attention. I look up, and right in front of me was Pete freakin Rose. He was headed to a store to sign autographs for the day. I walked back to the lobby still stunned I just nearly bumped into Pete Rose, and Franco Harris walks right past me. Franco and Pete in the span of about 5 minutes!

What's your rationale here?
Rose's transgressions had no impact on his performance as a player.
Bonds very obviously took steroids and turned himself from a 40 base stealer into a 50+ HR behemoth. His stats are drug-assisted. Sprinters don't get a record if there is a modest tailwind. Bonds had much more than a tailwind.
Curious on your thinking.

The best hitter ever and it is not even close. What a great player and should be in the Hall of Fame.

Tough night. Pete Rose was one of my childhood heroes. We would not have a 1980 chip without Pete Rose, and I won't hear anything different. He broke the rules, he lied, he ran with a sketchy crowd and he was one of the best baseball players who ever walked on grass.

His lifetime ban is over.

Yet we have a manager tomorrow who ironically oversaw the biggest cheating scandal in MLB going up against his former team whom he cheated to a ring. You really can't make this stuff up. Nothing happened to him other than a year suspension. Hinch lied the same as Rose did. The difference is Rose bet on games and there's no evidence he did anything to effect their outcome where there's unequivocal evidence Hinch did. Who did more to cheat the game?

The double standard is astonishing but that's what happens when the leadership in MLB is weak and malleable like Manfred is. The owners love him, that's why he's there. I get it. But I'd pay any reporter a thousand bucks to ask Hinch if he thinks what he did was worse than what Pete Rose did. That reporter would never be allowed in a MLB park again.

you either allow cheating or you don't...or you have gradations that are vague and allow you to have disparities in punishment..sure the astros cheated, just like every team that allowed guys to use corked bats, and every team that allowed guys to throw spit balls..hell, the spit ball was celebrated, it was theater to see if they could catch guys like gaylord perry...from not cutting the infield grass to tampering with the baseballs the home team provides, MLB has always had a scattered response to "cheating"...pete rose should already be in the HOF, but he got caught betting on reds games, and refused to admit it..had he copped immediately, he probably would have gotten in while alive..without knowing the man, the universal opinion is that he was a dirtbag, and i'm sure that played a role in his ban...ironically, mike fiers was the whistleblower on the astros cheating, he himself being accused of throwing two no hitters while doctoring the baseball..

Bonds has a HOFer before the steroids. One or the greatest players ever without them. Can't have a HOF without the best IMO

I agree with the decision. And players are still not allowed to bet on their league or be suspended. It goes to the heart of the integrity of the game. They get inside information, can collude to shave points, or worse, throw a game. I am in complete agreement with the decision.

Plus he lied about it for years afterwards. Even after it was quite evident and well known. MLB offered him forgiveness if he accepted fault…..he refused.

Do we have any evidence that Rose did anything to hurt the game?
Do you think he made people question the integrity of the game?
If so, cool--I just don't see it.
For me, the Hall of Fame of any sport is simply supposed to be a collection of the best ever to play. Is Rose one of the best ever to play?

News flash: Ohtani is lying about gambling. And I wouldn’t trust anything MLB “offers.” While Pete was a sketchy character, you can’t be much more of a low life than Rob Manfred. He just wears expensive suits to hide it.

Rose had the most wins of any player by a lot. 200 more than any player. If a kid came up today he would have to play 20 straight years and win 100 a year to catch rose.

I think Pete rose was a very flawed individual but don’t hold any real animosity other than his gambling. Having said that, I got a kick out of this

He was a guy that if he was on your team you loved him. Hard nosed, determined, always gave his all, inspiring. Made all his teammates play harder.

If he was on the other team, you hated him. Hard ass, hot dog, head case, SOB.

He broke some of the most important rules of the time…..no betting on baseball. A sport that had a huge scandal because of gambling. For years he refused to admit it in spite of solid evidence.

He made his bed…….

Rose made the all star team at five different positions
Pete Rose ruined the career of a promising catcher, Ray Fosse, with a cheap shot in an All Star game. I played in hundreds of sports games and I hate guys who were cheap shot artists. Rose is on my list of scumbags.

I often read on here, “that is the stupidpist ever.” This one cannot be topped even by Lando.

So what are your arguments? He never touched Ray Fosse or it wasn't a cheap shot?
He collided with the catcher to knock the ball loose so he could score a run and help his team win. This used to be the object of the game. There was absolutely nothing cheap about it. On the contrary, it was very hard earned.

Most every high level player (except, apparently, Mr. Rose) knows that type of play is unacceptable, and certainly unexpected, in a midseason exhibition game featuring the sport’s best players. There have rarely (if ever) been any cheap shots that would risk injury to other players in any all-star game in any professional sport.
A real game is a different story. And had this situation come up in a real game, Mr. Fosse would have been prepared for it and probably would have turned Mr. Rose’s face into mush.
