Rose Bowl Penn State - USC is on ESPNU right now

Did anyone else experience this problem: when I set my DirecTV VCR to record it, the guide said "USC - Penn State" but the actual recorded game was OSU - PSU. I then decided to record the whole series, deleting the 2 non-PSU games; however, when I started to delete the game titles "Alabama - Tennessee," I noticed the picture contained those glorious white helmets -- it was actually the Rose Bowl.

So now I have recorded games USC-Penn State called "Alabama-Tennessee" and OSU-Penn State called "USC-Penn State."

Is ESPN just screwing with me, knowing that I refuse to watch anything other than a PSU game?

Watching this game shows how hard it will be to replace Godwin.

He will be missed for sure, but I wouldn't form an opinion on him based on one game. Sure, it was a big game, on a big stage, and he came up huge, but thru the season other wideouts had their day in the spotlight too.

Yeah, same thing for me, also a DirecTV user. Does happen occasionally that the program guide is not accurate, and it seems to involve ESPN, like for a 30/30 topic.

We can agree to disagree. He was hands down the most reliable and consistent wide out on the team and he is receiving rave reviews from Tampa Bay. I just think losing hm will sting in the passing game a little more than I had hoped. I also see the running game being more consistent this year and them using Gesicki more to off set the lose of Godwin.

Yes, ESPNU had USC/PSU scheduled for 3:00PM yesterday, but Mich/OSU game was on. USC/PSU did come on at 6:00PM. They were behind 3hrs.
he Bama/Clemson game that eventually came on at 9:00PM but was scheduled for 6:00PM.

I think we agree more than we disagree. He was the best we had, for sure, but I have a lot of faith in the guys who will be lining up this year.

Hard to believe that USC could have taken away most of our WR weapons in the Rose Bowl. IIRC, Godwin had 9 or 10 catches, Gesicki 1, Thompkins 1, and Hamilton 0.

That last interception intended for Godwin was a killer. The pass floated so long in the air, a safety with a broken leg could have come over and picked it off. Coupled with the fact the USC secondary knew we were throwing to Godwin again.

Good point. After watching the USC game yesterday, I believe that the loss of Blacknall was the main factor in what you say. #3 seemed "out of whack" as he apparently ran the wrong route in USC's 1st interception, then let a catch slip through his hands for USC's 2nd INT. After those 2 errors, he was seemingly done. I also think the staff didn't trust #11 who dropped a few passes in previous games (except the Gopher game :)), and #84 who we all expect to break out this fall. So USC could focus on #12 and #88 when it wasn't obsessed with #26. I think Saeed would have driven the Trojan secondary crazy with his speed, height, and ability to catch the ball.

We managed to overcome losing ARob and he was better than Godwin...we'll be just fine.
How do you figure we managed to overcome the loss of ARob. My recollection is that passing game and Hackenberg were much worse the following year after he left.

Because we won the Big 10 in the second year after he left and went to the Rose Bowl. It's not like losing one receiver is something that can't be overcome especially when we have a better QB than we had when we lost ARob. My point is our record was about the same after losing a receiver like ARob, I would say we can be just just as good after losing Godwin.

Agree. Saeed would have been a difference maker no doubt. He should have a big year coming up. Loosing Manny hurt also, but have Saeed running routes along with Godwin would have given the USC secondary fits since they would have had to account for Hamilton and Gesecki too. "Tall Order" indeed!

It was the third year. Franklin never coached ARob. Hackenberg had two (2) down years after ARob left. While there were a lot of contributing factors Hackenberg's down years, the loss of ARob was a large part of it. ARob made Hackenberg look much better than he actually was in his Freshman season.

In my book, waiting three years for the passing game to recover does not qualify as overcoming the loss of ARob. I hope the loss of Godwin does not have a similar effect on our passing game.

No Godwin means that Trace will be forced to look to other receivers and not just zero in on the guy that bailed him out numerous times last year. But with all that is in the stable between Hamilton, Blacknall, Thompkins, Gesicki, Charles, and Johnson plus whatever they deploy out of the backfield, there shouldn't be too much of a downturn in production. Defenses are really going to have to choose hard on how to defend PSU this year.

He only had 59 catches...that's not really zeroing in on one guy. By comparison ARob had 97 catches...that's zeroing in on one guy. We had a lot of guys involved and different guys stepped up in different games.

We had very few quality receivers after ARob left and not a great QB...apples and oranges.

Godwin had the most targets but the ball was spread around quite a bit. I believe Godwin represented about 30% of the catches. And we had several receivers make plays down the field. Think about the Wisconsin game. Godwin was pretty quiet but our receivers still tore it up. I suspect many coaches would be pleased to have a QB who spread the ball around the way TM did last year.

I agree with what you say here. However, you stated earlier that we overcame the loss of ARob and I was just pointing out that we really didn't overcome his loss until 3 years later. It was not a good analogy if you think we are going to overcome the loss of Godwin.

Bailed out?

JJ will be the guy that go's and gets 50/50 balls like Godwin, might take some more time- he will be as good as Godwin by the time he leaves PSU.
