Sandy Defenders... How is Coquese still head WBB coach?

The difference is that the men's BB program and baseball programs have never really been very successful. Washington presided over the decline of a very strong program.

C Washington needs to go. Put that historically strong program in the deep freeze.

Further, I handed her my cousin, who led her Univ to the Sweet 16 and was all time leading 3 pt shooter at her skool. Coquese didn’t even call my cousin who was all state in MI for 4 straight years (5’ 11” tall and super student too). Made no sense. Now playing in pro’s. Dumbarse

They are afraid of Washington, She has brought this program down

Who is afraid of Washington???? why would they be afraid of a coach who is not succeeding. When does her contract end???

do people care if there are players from PA or elsewhere?? seems like winning is the key.

Her contract expires as soon as she loses her next game.

Financially you pay her till the end of the year and move on. Her teams have gotten worse and worse. No discipline no organization. It’s like they spend the entire practice time practicing mistakes. At least the men’s team has shown marked improvement over the course of the season

You mean white players?
Biggest issue I have is they do not play defense. Even Coquese's best teams were weak defensively. Would expect they will just not re-new Coquese and have a replacement in mind or will begin a search.

They supposedly have a great recruiting class coming in. I know the Best Player in the WPIAL is coming in the fall. (Her team won the WPIAL championship last night and finished undefeated for the school's first crown.).

According to this link, have 2 4 star's and 3 three star's coming in. Know nothing about rankings.

Huh?

Before Barbour took over, PSU won three straight BigTen championships.
I don’t know if the fall off of the cliff has anything to do with Barbour or not (my guess is not much)...... but complaining about the AD who hired her, given the logistics of how things broke down, would be “not sensible”.

Who was the coach of those teams?

Please enlighten me...
Good question. This program is so low, it could meet burial standards. You tell me why Coach Washington couldn't put all the seniors in the game yesterday, even for a couple of minute? I know the game was tight near the end, but she could have put these young ladies in at the beginning of the game for a few minutes. Five seniors, two played the other three sat on the bench. Coach definitely showed disrespect for her players and the fans, who wanted to honor all the senior players. I feel sorry for the next coach, it will take at least 3-5 years to resurrect this program. So many people bitch about the men's program. Well, the men's program had nothing when Pat came, but the women's program was strong and had a good fan base. Pat has build up the fan base for men. But the fan base for women is almost extinct.

Yes, a very strong program it WAS, and a program with the history, momentum, and support so that the normal PSU BB recruiting excuses do not apply. In fact, the recruiting services said that she managed to recruit enough talent for considerably better outcomes if those recruits could have been developed and then coached at a higher standard. Washington should have been gone years ago, but the fact that she is currently a bigger embarrassment than Pat may just save Pat. :(

If Sandy was doing her job PSU would have a women's BB coach in at least their 2nd year of rebuilding, and a men's BB coach completing at least their 1st year rebuilding...

Yep, and Rene made them play basketball her way, which was a pretty successful way at that. Or those players sat on the bench until they learned to play basketball, and play it Rene's way.
I have been advocating for Coquese to be fired for at least four years. She is a lazy coach. Even when we had Maggie Lucas and another really good player (whose name I forgot) we were not well coached. A few talented players made us good.
Coquese's teams have never played fundamental defense. I would be generous to call it playground ball because it isn't even that.

Yep, I watched all the games that were televised when Rene was the coach. It was fun to watch good fundamental BB. But I just can't watch Washington's teams, as they run, gun, play poor D, and she stands on the sidelines for long stretches of games with her arms folded as if she was watching someone else's team. Unwatchable, and should have been recognized by the PSU admin long ago. Sad, and why giving Sandy a new contract was another bad admin decision.....

I am really surprised Rudy Marisa let his granddaughter play for CW. Maybe he will come out of retirement and join the staff?

You keep telling this story and never spell “school” correctly. I don’t blame anyone for not taking you seriously.

I would imagine she will be gone shortly after they lose in the Big 10 Tournament this week. 4 of 5 of the conference wins were against the only two teams that finished below them in the conference standings. Since they are playing Wisconsin in the 1st round and they beat them twice, they may win the 1st round game. I think a good coach could turn it around in a year or two - not to a NCAA tournament team, but at least in the top 1/2 or maybe 1/3 of the conference. The Big 10 conference, other than Maryland, is not that strong, and there is probably enough talent on team, if coached well, to make them competitive with most teams in the conference.

She has better overall results than the men’s basketball coach and the baseball coach, so maybe Sandy should start with those two instead.

Niether men's basketball or baseball have even been regular top 10 teams like WBB used to be. It's a crime Washington is still employed.

I don't think she's ready for this gig yet, but Kelly Mazzante is at IUP working under Bob McConnell (Suzies' brother). IUP has had the best 4 year run in their history under them.

Who should be considered among the other candidates? I don’t follow women’s basketball so aside from the few perennial champion level teams I know nothing about women’s basketball coaches? Can we pull a Cael here and hire someone who will produce championships?

Here is one I ran across:
Courtney Banghart, Princeton head coach- In 2009-10, Banghart’s third year at Princeton, the Tigers made the NCAA tournament. Since then, they’ve never finished worst than 2nd in conference and have made the Big Dance or WNIT every single season. Tack on the 2015 Naismith National Coach of the Year after going 31-1 and you’ve got a 40-year-old coach who is the envy of many. Her name is one that is often in the mix anytime a Power 5 job has opened, but she has yet to make the leap. Most agree that she can afford to wait it out for a job that is really appealing to her. Next time an academically inclined school with a good tradition opens up, be prepared to see Banghart’s name attached to the serious candidate list.

Predicting how someone will do as a coach as they move up in competition level is difficult to do. But the woman has balls which PSU could certainly use more of:

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/03/forbes-courtney-banghart-princeton-50-greatest-world-leaders

And before you get you panties all moist, it was Fortune. not Forbes, that named her to its 50 greatest world leader list.
