I don't know who is more dumb, Steel or that moron Panther Dave - that is some scary stupid.

Steel just said if Saquon could get his 40 down to 4.33 he could transfer to Pitt and be part of Pitt's Lightning Offense.Of course as a backup not a starter he's not tall or fast enough to start there!Steel and The Captain personally time every Pitt player so their times are legitimate that Steel post on the Lair.bwdik

I think that time might be last year's. Sounds like they were doing new testing this week.

Would guess that it's less (substantially less?) than last years. Don't think you try this type of build up if he had same or slower time.

Brown ran a 4.54 at an Opening regional before his senior year - although that seems slow given what we know about his 100m and 60m speed.

For reference, Donovan Johnson ran a 4.35 and KJ Hamler ran a 4.43 at the same event. When Barkley and Sanders were there before their senior years, they ran a 4.66 and 4.58, respectively. I don't know if those numbers are accurate, but it does give a frame of reference for these guys against each other at a consistently-timed event. The 40 can be a difficult measurement to get accurate numbers for.

Study this doctoral thesis on running back measurables....
4.38....4.32.... 4.53.... indoor.... outdoor........ wind aided.... into the wind..... whatever.

This is what a great running back looks like and his plethora of finely honed skills and talents are on full display here. You and I have seen it a bunch of times..... but it never gets old watching it.

Johnson and Hamler are specifically "speed" guys, in my opinion, while Sanders and Barkley are more of the all around threats, so it makes sense that they would have lower 40 times. I know that Barkley was timed in the high 4.3's last year on campus, so I would guess that both Sanders and Barkley are now sub 4.4 and once they get in the program for a year, Johnson and Hamler may even get to be sub 4.3.

Running backs are really not judged on their 40 time. Acceleration in the first 10 yards and then the acceleration from 10 to 20 yards are the two most important times. Fast twitch short speed is a much more coveted physical characteristic than straight 40 time. A super shifty back doesn't need to run a straight line to the end zone and rarely breaks one over 30 in the NFL. That being said, if he runs a sub 4.5 (at the Combine, laser timed) he will be a top 10 pick. Ezekiel Elliot ran a 4.47 which was 6th in his running back group. "Super-fast" Todd Gurley runs a 4.4 which is the same time Adrian Peterson ran. Our track is fast so the 4.38 translates into a 4.48 at the combine. If he runs that, he's a top 10 pick,.

Obliviax would have already posted this, but I beat him to it. Where is Obliviax lately anyway??

In addition to the incredible run by Saquon, I liked watching Bates put that SC lineman on the ground.

He also wouldn't fit in Rutgers's crowded backfield. I love that one because it came from an actual college football writer.

So, if 4.33 is true, it would have been the third fastest time in last year's NFL combine. That's pretty darn fast. And for a guy who is over 220 lbs., that is incredibly fast.

This is from Penn Lives write up last year. It is entirely possible his avg was 4.38 again this year. The tweet PSU_1991 followed up with doesn't make clear if that was his fastest or only attempt or his new average.

Saquon Barkley
The list of speedy Lions begins with their most talented player overall -- sophomore running back Saquon Barkley. The 1,000-yard rusher is a 4.38 man in the 40. His best 40 time of his six which were recorded was a 4.32. His average time was 4.38. That's moving, man.

Ask the USC secondary..

To your point (USC fan) ...

... I recently listened to a podcast with one of our most respected players and a likely captain for the upcoming season, Chris Hawkins (5th yr senior). He described SQ as the BEST player he's faced while at USC and likened him only to McCaffery (Stanford), but stronger.

Hawkins said he's VERY strong, fast, instinctive and respectful of the game and his opponent. Chris, who's a typical aggressive DB, said what bothered him most aside from trying to tackle him was the way in which SQ would time and again get up and tell the one who tackled him: "Nice hustle, good tackle."
