Dad of four-star 2017 recruit told Urban Meyer to not recruit his son

Most parents would consider it an honor if Urban Meyer wanted to recruit their son. Chris Thorpe is not one of those parents.
Thorpe, a former Penn State football player, is the father of C.J. Thorpe, a four-star 2017 prospect. The younger Thorpe told ESPN.com that, after the fact and unbeknownst to him, his father had fielded a call more than a year ago from Meyer and told the Ohio State head coach point-blank he “can’t recruit my son.”
“Urban Meyer called my dad and he told him he should stop recruiting me because it’s not going to happen,” Thorpe told ESPN.com. “After I got my Penn State offer Urban called my dad and then he fell off the face of the earth. I didn’t know what happened and thought Ohio State was just not offering me, but I talked to my dad a year after the call and he was like, ‘Yeah, I told him he can’t recruit you.'”
No specific reason was given for why the elder Thorpe blocked the Buckeyes from recruiting his son. It should be noted that the son stated he likely wouldn’t have chosen the Buckeyes anyway regardless of any intervention from his father.
Thorpe committed to the Nittany Lions in April of this year and is considered a near-lock to sign with James Franklin‘s program in early February. He will, however, take a visit to UCLA in late January. Current Bruins defensive coordinator Tom Bradley was an assistant when Thorpe’s father was a running back for the Nittany Lions.
247Sports.com rates the 6-3, 318-pound Thorpe as the No. 11 guard in the country and the No. 7 player at any position in the state of Pennsylvania. He’s also the No. 204 prospect on that recruiting website’s composite board.
