Scuffle Day 1: Round of 16

I cant bring myself to be a JG apologist anymore. But before we go all HR on him, realize he and the staff know what we know and more. only thing that can be said in times like this .....I trust in Cael
You could see that Carl was having trouble watching JG. He pointed and yelled a couple times. He questioned a call at the end of the second and the ref gave him a warning. Right now, JG has to be replaced going into B1Gs.

if rasheed wins next round he most likely gets Wilson. If he wins that he most likely gets preisch, who dominated Hammond. If the kid places he will have earned it the hard way.

What was the call against moss. He got a stall warning for leaving mat then there was a pt awarded.

Beyers said the penalty point was for fleeing the mat, and that it was a very bad call. Beyers can be a bit of a PSU homer at times but normally is pretty fair IMO.

It was a strange one. I didn't agree, but could see why the ref called it. Had a body lock, slipped off, tripped over the opponent's feet on the way through, and stumbled out of bounds (still on his feet).

He turned back in and I thought made plenty of effort to get back to wrestling, but the opponent had followed and stepped out. Could easily see from the ref's point of view why it was called. Didn't like it though.

Everyone is so quick to jump on the Kade bandwagon. Kade has had some great results but let's see how he finishes the tournament tomorrow. I'm not sure what's up with Jimmy, but I know he can get back on track before March.

Who do you all (honestly) think will score more in March for us, Kade or Jimmy? I think Jimmy will score more...

PSU had 2 TFs and 3 Majors in Round of 16

Shame that Rasheed is dropped to consolations. He really had a war with Massa.

Rasheed/Massa was a fantastic bout, but Rasheed is probably kicking himself a bit. He carelessly knelt on both knees fixing his head gear when Massa blasted in for the deciding takedown. Ugh!

He doesn't finish ANYTHING. His TD conversion pctg is probably around 30% and he gets in deep and just has no clue what do

Yeah, Gulibon's TD conversion rate has become a real issue for him. I gotta believe he knows what to do, but isn't fully committed or just isn't physically able to. I think his small stature hurts him more at 141 than at 133. I also have trouble believing that he is, pound for pound, one of the strongest guys on the squad. I've read that a few different times on these boards, but I sure don't see it on the mat. He also seems susceptible to the occasional blast double, which seems to take him completely off guard at times.

Someone else said this earlier today, but he is probably better suited at 133 and is taking one for the team to move up to 141. That may be the simplest and best explanation of what we're seeing. But until Jimmy gets it figured out, PSU has a real question mark at 141.

Yeah, that just can't happen. Great match, but that was a really careless and costly mistake.

Backup QB Syndrome. If Moss were the starter, eking out an OT win over Campbell, we'd be calling for Gulibon.

Hopefully Moss decks Heil again, so he will have earned the spot instead of merely Gulibon losing it.

Thanks guys.

Rasheed lost his match due to a mental error. Early in the match, he had to adjust his head gear - twice. The third time it happened, Rasheed reached up with both hands to adjust the head gear and Massa shot in for an easy takedown. It surprised Rasheed and he couldn't fend it off.

Good thing to learn in early January instead of March. Doubt he'll make that mistake again. Sounds like it was a heck of a match.

In terms of Jimmy I would say R-E-L-A-X to those wanting to pull him from the lineup. Part of not finishing his shots might have had to do with some on-going discomfort with his ankle. Many times wrestlers who are countering shots are grabbing and twisting ankles and its possible he's still hurting a bit. Remember all of the loses Q had as a Sophomore early on? Not saying Jimmy is going to win it all or anything but let's let the process play itself out and see what happens. Plenty of time for him to heal up and focus on improving his finishes.

I've brought this up before, and I believe it more now, that the JG we're seeing is the real JG. Everybody keeps talking about a JG that we've never seen as if he's real. It's been going on for over two years now. To some there is a version of JG that is a lot better than the version we've seen while he's been at PSU. The only problem is that we've never seen this version of him that people believe exists.

I think he's a fantastic kid and one of the best PA high school wrestlers I've ever seen. However, he's a very average/slightly below average NCAA wrestler. I've come to terms with that. You see it with elite high school wrestlers every single year. Some kids don't do well at the next level and it seems that's the case with JG, as hard as it is for people to believe.

He's shown what he's capable of in matches with Clark in last years dual and Taylor at NCAA's...those types of moments have earned him whatever lofty expectations some have for him at this level...couple that with an AA finish last year and it's fair to state that he is at least an ABOVE average NCAA wrestler.

How many "very average/slightly below average" wrestlers reach the podium at nationals?
