SIAP: Gymnastics coach serial predator

I get the sentiment Dem. I heard the story on BBC and was shocked but it's early. Let's see how they handle it, I'm guessing, much better than we did.

It's interesting that the complaints of these mothers of girls are taken more seriously than those of Second Mile boys - yet how long did this guy escape arrest?
While the similarities are striking, this guy comes across with a different pathology - threatening to sue right off the bat, rather than riding that wave of plausible deniability.

I find the giving of gifts to be interesting as well. Major red flag.

Media ignores massive abuse story

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/dec/15/usa-gymnastics-sexual-abuse-report

On December 15th, a comprehensive examination of USA Gymnastics (located in Indianapolis) found widespread abuse: 115 adults at every level of the sport were accused of molestation. At least 368 gymnasts have alleged sexual abuse over last 20 years. The investigation alleges "systematic failures" enabled predatory coaches. So why a collective shoulder shrug by the Fake News? I guess there aren't any famous Paterno-like coaches in the sport....

It really is a pretty incredible story -- and it's falling on deaf ears across the country.

Holy crap. Shocking.

Al Trautwig, Jim McKay and Chris Schenkel had to know.

Often the media IS the coordinated cover up. There is no way that this isn't huge news, certainly way bigger than other stories that are non-stop 24/7.

There is no doubt that the media sells the stories that the media bosses chose and to fit their agenda while omitting stories, facts, changing facts, misrepresenting as they see fit. It is why Americans can't have intelligent discussions anymore. Everyone has their own "facts" from their sensationalized stories that are sold with so much emotion. Truth? Does it matter to the media?

The fortunate thing is that many Americans are waking up and no longer trusting the information that the media tries to push on us. There are other means becoming more available to get unfettered information from the source. People at the scene post on social media. Wikileaks and others post what was intended to remain hidden. But it is clear that we have entered an age where information is being rightfully questioned and often times main stream no longer equals reputable. Media sources can only be exposed manipulating people so many times before they lose their power.

Back to this story, apparently no media wishes to put a USA olympic sport in this negative light to expose a decades long disgusting systematic crime operation.

Would this possibly be why? From the article: "Nearly all of the victims were girls."

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/dec/15/usa-gymnastics-sexual-abuse-report

That - and I don't see a former director of the FBI standing at a nationally televised press conference, adjusting his reading glasses just.so on the end of his nose, peering out across the room - wagging his finger into the cameras along the back wall - and going on about a "cover up due to bad publicity".

That shade of blue tie looked particularly striking against the dark suit.

Paging LouAnna Simon, Ms. LouAnna Simon...
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2...exual-abuse-allegations-larry-nassar-olympics

Why doesn't the media cover this more widely?
1. Male coaches abusing girls doesn't have as high an "ick" factor as a male coach abusing boys.
2. In our case, people could hate Penn State and its "football first culture," while rooting for the football first culture of any of a hundred different schools. This is USA Gymnastics. There is no other game in town when it comes to this sport. This would be shame of a national degree. Nobody really wants to go there.
3. It hits too close to home for some people. Is it hypocritical to be indignant over this after laughing at the antics of under-aged Clorette in Animal House? Or all the stories of rock stars with their teen groupies? Or all the movies, sit-coms, and stand up routines where "jailbait" was the punchline? Or maybe it hits not close enough for some people who probably honestly don't see an issue here.

All true but also no legendary coach to tear down for click bait.

I recall a poster (I don't recall who) very early on in our shizz-volcano here with Sandusky who posted the same thing...if Sandusky was molesting girls this would not have been the tidal wave of hell unleashed that it is. Nobody said much about it at the time but you may be on to something.

Bingo

A lot of you guys have hit the nail on the head. This story isn't about priests molesting altar boys and an institution that millions revere either covering it up or ignoring it, nor is it about an iconic college football coach being accused of doing the same thing as the Roman Catholic Church. Those stories drive ratings, ergo they get non-stop news coverage. Conversely, hardly anyone in this country even thinks about gymnastics unless it's time to discuss the next Olympic Dream Tream. As a result there's no 24 hour cable news coverage (actually, I haven't seen any cable news coverage), no ex-jocks ranting endlessly on ESPN (Desmond Howard apparently doesn't care about little girls being molested), and no front page headlines on the New York Times. Instead we'll be treated to non-stop coverage of Trump's tweets, the latest on the Jon Benet Ramsey case, and a truck running people over in Germany.

Guys, this is outside the NCAA's purview. Nothing to see here... move along!

USA Gymnastics needs the death penalty, if we are going to be consistent. Not to mention a bunch of gym owners and prosecutors ought to be in jail.
Essentially identical story in competitive swimming. USA Swim has covered up and not taken action against dozens of male coaches who similarly abused/ molested child, adolescent and young adult female swimmers. The more successful the coach i.e. getting kid to olympic trials or olympics, the greater the cover they got to molest. Also highly under reported story for the reasons described in this thread, male to female abuse triggers much less revulsion than male to male and there is no obvious target of said revulsion (PSU, Catholic church, etc)

Because the following is the mentality of a lot of adults in our Country

1. Man sexually abuses girl (very bad, send man to jail for many years to life)
2. Woman sexually abuses girl (tell her to stop)
3. Woman sexually abuses boy (way to go son! send woman to jail for many months to a few years)
4. Man sexually abuses a boy (ick! we can't talk about this! send many to jail for life, if he makes it there)

If the Karoli's had been involved in this you can damn well guarantee this would have been front page news. There are 1,000s of gymnastics clubs throughout the US, 1,000s! Some parents use coaches as 'free' babysitters. They drop their kids off and as soon as the door is closed, they're burning rubber to get to the bar, motel, or back home. Very few parents stay to monitor the session (and many places do not allow the parents to stay - my children do not attend anything where parents are not allowed to stay).

Basically, Its not Joe Paterno and Penn State, so nobody gives a damn. After the sandusky scandal broke, I had lifelong friends going onto Facebook and posting that they hope "Joe Paterno enjoys getting sodomized by the devil in Hell." Lets just say, some of my relationships have changed, but where are the news stories about this? Why isnt everyone that was so disgusted about child abuse when it happened at Penn State equally as disgusted now? Where is the anger and uproar? Where are all those people in our lives that all of a sudden became "child abuse advocates," and expressed their deep disgust with what happened at PSU? What about the Kids?

Oh, its not Joe Paterno, and its not a program that prides itself on doing things the right way, we only only care about victims of child abuse if it is a juicy story and it takes down a legend.
