SIAP: James Franklin's biggest mistake

Not his mistake at all, rather it is one of his biggest positives. The loudest fans, both for PSU and against are the mistake prone, guilty parties. His expectations and goals, for the program, were to build it, the right way. He continues to deliver on that promise. Never heard him give a date for that first MNC.

It baffles me that people question and bitch about JF who was thrilled to get this job and spreads his enthusiasm everywhere he goes. Yet many speak wistfully about the departure of BOB and his legacy.....a man who never wanted to come here and tried to leave after the first year.

When O’Brien arrived four years ago, Penn State was a toxic waste site without a hazmat suit to be found. When he left for the NFL two years later, he got out knowing the next two years would be the hardest for a program hit with severe recruiting sanctions while working under a functioning NCAA death penalty.

Time to take off those Joe glow coke bottle glasses and see the world for what it really is, folks.

Its just another media guy setting up the plot...PSU fans want nobody to succeed but Joe Paterno...we are stuck in the past blah blah as if we never criticized Joe when he was coach.

Its old and tiring and non PSU people actually believe this crap.

Well right now both Pitt and MSU are at Woodland Hills today. The head coach mentioned that no one from PSU has contacted him with when or who from PSU is coming. I would say a top recruit that is as important as Sanders would have been at the top of the visit list. Now PSU may well have someone coming but it does reflect on either the changes is the staff not quite ready or Franklin/coach is on his way but hasn't contacted the coach yet.

Bullspit, If you have to wet nurse the kid at this point, let him go elsewhere. We need OL. DL and LB's more than RB's. Enough of the hand wringing and Terrelle Pryor like hysteria. I am absolutely certain that his young man has been treated royally by everyone associated with PSU. If a visit from another staff sways him so be it. For God sake, stop already.

I came across this and hope it provides some proper perspective.

That article includes a bit of truth and a lot of BS. It's true that Franklin walked in to the worst of the sanctions, but...

  • Of course there are high expectations. But the "high" expectations were to win 8 games by beating teams like Temple, NW, Maryland, and Ill. Nobody expected PSU to beat the top tier teams during the first few years.
  • Of course there is a lot of pressure. Don't you think Brady Hoke was under a lot of pressure at Michigan? Or Richt at Georgia? Doesn't a lot of pressure automatically come with a $4.8 million salary?
  • Only one outright B1G title since 1993 and an average W/L record of 8 wins is incredibly misleading. PSU won the B1G based on head to head wins in both 2005 and 2009. The early part of the decade had some tough years but from 2005-2011 (until Joe's firing) the team averaged 10 wins. So while the author is technically correct he went out of his way to put a negative spin on things.
  • The circumstances are still dire at PSU? Why? Sanctions are gone and our last 3 recruiting classes will have been ranked 24th, 15th, and hopefully 15th again. 2016 might bring some struggles but 2017 is setting up really nice at this point.
Franklin should feel the pressure. If you're a top 10 franchise with top 10-20 facilities, a top 10 fan base, and a top 10 paid staff you ought to be able to get your team back into the top 25. It's Franklin's job to hire good assistants and to recruit good players. Why are we spending all this money if Franklin can't convince coaches and recruits that good years are ahead of us.

Why are WE spending this money? You are paying JF?

Newsflash.....Miles Sanders had a bowel movement this AM and no PSU Football Coach was there to wipe his ass! How can that happen considering what we pay them?

Basically, the premise and conclusion of that story is just a bunch of shit. Obviously the writer does not follow the program closely enough to substantiate his premise and honestly, I've heard Franklin say many, many times how it's going to be a long-term rebuilding. I don't think Franklin is painting a picture that is not there, which is what the writer would have you believe. But again, if it's in print or on a computer screen, well, by dingy, it must be the gospel truth. And unfortunately, the uneducated who have no ties to the situation believe it. Must I remind you of what we went through when Joe was crucified by the media?

What a silly thing to post. I realize that we're going to win some an lose some when it comes to recruiting. I never said anything about a particular recruit. But in the aggregate, a coach's recruiting and W/L record should be commensurate with his salary. Why would anybody disagree with this?

P.S. We are absolutely paying CJF's salary. How much do you spend to take your family to a PSU football game? Where do you think that money goes?

PSU will have coaches in Pittsburgh tomorrow is my understanding. But maybe it should have been something that needed to be done today. I am a Pitt fan and believe Sanders is PSU bound. But in recruiting kids can do some strange things and he is a recruit that is too important to not be on like white on rice.

Here's another viewpoint. Who the hell should want to coach football at PSU? The President and BOT worked in lockstep with the NCAA to turn the program into Bucknell. The fan base (that bitched and moaned for decades about JVP) now selectively uses his tenure to bash the current regimes. Instead of putting the blame where it belongs, they point to accomplishments that occurred before the sanctions. Any reasonable person must realize there are many division one football jobs much more desirable than Penn State at this point. But, go ahead, drive another viable coach away and that certainly will attract someone like Nick Saban (who these lunatics probably think is coveting this job) to come in a sign nothing but 5 star athletes who were 12 years old when the shit hit the fan and have dedicated their lives to restoring PSU to its rightful place.
I loved JVP and no one has more admiration and respect for what he achieved and how he went about his business. But, this lunatic fringe is beginning to do more damage than Surma, Suhey, Joyner and the rest of the misanthropes. Grow up!

Yeah, try that explanation when a cop pulls you over........ your taxes pay his salary.

Look at this board and all of the criticism of CJF, how could you deny that many Penn State fans are unhappy with CJF's results?

I'll bet the Alabama boards go ballistic when they lose that one game a year. I know some LSU fans who told me they wanted to take aim (literally) at Les Miles. Fan(atic).A large number of angry people in their real lives and they try to take some kind of control over matters that have little or nothing to do with their miserable existence..

great article-it really puts it in perspective. I think most of us realize now that BOB fled because he knew what was coming the next two years.. Losing Hand is a good thing-and maybe he was forced to move. Losing Shoop was a shot to the ego but probably not a big deal. All the transfers, except Reeder, are a product of our times and reality of big time football.
I've always thought Franklin is doing great things and it's only a matter of time. I certainly still think that.
I don't want them to lose Sanders or anyone else currently verbaled, but nobody is a must get. With Sanders they are arguable getting the best RB, best Olineman, and best DE in the country (is Gary a DT or DE?). They are doing great.
I came across this and hope it provides some proper perspective.

It is laughable that "writers" like this actually think CJF is on "the hot seat"

nobody in their right mind believes that, only the looney birds
He doesn't think he is on the hot seat. That's one of the main points of the article.
