SJ and anyone else please chime in. It is the Minnesota vs PSU highlights. A lot of debate about scheme vs player mistakes. There are 2 plays I want SJ to breakdown. The first is at the 2:00 mark, and the second is right after it at the 2:10 mark. I am just curious about how this scheme is supposed to work.

First Play: 2:00

Minnesota has 2 WRs line up on the same side of the LOS at the top of the screen and an RB in the backfield. Cam Brown is guarding the slot WR and John Reid is guarding the WR lined up wide. The WR Reid is guarding catche's the pass.

When the ball is snapped the RB runs out for a pass in the flat. Cam Brown leaves his WR to guard the RB, but the RB was already being covered by Jan Johnson. Why would Brown leave his WR to guard an RB already being covered? But the worst part is what Reid does by design. Reid is guarding #16 on Minny. His WR breaks across the field on an in or post. Reid is left like in nomans land like a safety but there is no one in his area in front of him or behind him. Both WRs cut across the middle on a post. Reid left his WR go but no one picked him up? It made no sense and it was an easy completion. Garret Taylor picked up the WR Brown left open, and Wade got sucked in going forward for a run play, but then when sprinting back to guard the WR already being guarded by Taylor. So by design Reid stopped guarding his WR when he cut across the middle, and no one picked him up.

Second Play: 2:10

Very similar to the first. Reid stops guarding his WR when he cuts across the middle.

It was two very easy completions.
