So much to unpack in this quote.....Franklin postgame

I will support CJF on many things, but if the words wet day, wet field or anything like that is something he thinks is an acceptable factor for lack of success running yesterday…WTF CJF. Too bad field wasn’t wet when Illinois was on offense, just when we were. 🤬

It’s pretty tough for OSU to improve, I mean they have to decide which of their gazillion five stars they have to play. Coaching brilliance.
But, but, we have a great recruiter. How can this be? A front 7 manhandled by Illinois? Lack of depth at the most important position on the field? An offensive line unable to get less than two yards on third down all year? Running backs who can’t play consistently?

I didn't think he looked right from the start. I thought he had 1 excellent pass on the slant TD but most of the others were not very good. The one big one to Dotson should have been an int if not for a great play by Jahands. But yes Lovett got him killed on one bad missed block and the refs missed an obvious PF against him that would have changed the game and possibly the outcome.
You bring up that PF non call. Was it really a PF?

Clifford was running up the middle and passed it late. The Illinois kid was going at him and looked to me as though he held up. They just hit shoulders. Clifford went down like he was shot.

Could it be Clifford was so fragile he should not have been playing?

Watch the replay again. Defender was definitely not holding up. It was a clear late hit, and absolutely should have been called. Not saying this cost PSU the game, just to be clear.

The biggest problems I saw going into the year in no particular order. Even without Clifford's injury, I thought best case would have been 9 and 3 and 5 and 7 was worst case if we had a couple of key injuries and that is what we are looking at if Cliff can't get back to something resembling 100%.

1. Two square pegs in round holes on the D-line. This has manifested itself in various ways through the first seven games, most notably, the lack of a consistent pass rush from the front four and both ends getting destroyed against B or C gap running plays. It was a problem before, but PJ out, it is even worse and we do not have an answer.
2. CV is third on the depth chart at QB. This indicated he isn't ready to play. This was obviously a horrible development since Roberson is a run first dual threat QB in the mold of Trace McSorley. That fact in conjunction with MY's demonstrated history meant we didn't have a backup on the roster.
3. Third very different offense in three years with three very different blocking schemes. The line took the gap scheme in pass protection pretty quickly but it is clear the man scheme every interior player was recruited to execute are not able to adapt to quickly in the running game.
4. No legit #1 receiver. This has proved problematic the last two weeks as Dotson is frequently erased from the game plan by tight man coverage.
5. Yurcich is not known to consider complimentary football as a illegitimate concept. We are starting to see the impact. The defense is playing 20% more plays per game than expected, and given the number of close games, a lot of them are going against the 2 deep including 67 run plays yesterday. We are now at the point where we can expect the defense to fade in the fourth quarter of every close game.

It was definitely a late hit and should have been called and would have if anyone saw it. The defender did pull up however.

I guess Franklin’s point was that we needed an effective passing game to loosen up Illinois’ defense and open up the run. With no passing threat due to Clifford’s limitations, Illinois could sell out on the run. We obviously don’t have the horses to run effectively against a defense selling out on the run.

It’s certainly fair to question the decision to play Clifford, but I have to believe the coaches still felt he was the best option. Maybe Clifford said he felt better than he actually did because he felt he needed to play. It’s all conjecture since we’re on the outside.

Div 1AA teams don't need to sell out against the run with this team.

No it was a blatantly missed call

It was a late hit, but I've seen much worse not called. It's effect was amplified because Clifford really was too hurt to be playing.

exactly- do people really think that the staff didn't know there was a problem? if it was scheme or just a matter of starting someone else, it would have been fixed by now- we don't have the horses- not on the line, and not in the backfield

sometimes players aren't who you thought they were

First and foremost, I think we have a strength issue. Tell me the last team we were stronger than on the field. I can't remember. Definitely not this year.

Second, we have had RB issues since Miles turned pro. Sure, JB looked like a future 1st rd pick, but it took nearly all season to make him the #1. Cain was probably the most consistent back that year and we still had a committee.

We just aren't a tough team. Finesse football works in the warm weather. It works in domes. It struggles when you have 0.5 competent QBs on a wet field.

So, Franklin couldn’t even take responsibility and simply say, “We weren’t ready to play and I am responsible for today’s loss. It starts with me.”
He’s 9-7 in the last 16 games and soon to be 9-8 next week. Mediocrity seems to be back again. I’m afraid that James gave us his best already.
He actually said exactly this after the game. He said they weren’t ready to play and said that is on him haha.

CV didn’t even have a senior football season. Kid didn’t play meaningful football since his Junior year. He is said to be very inaccurate with the ball in practice reps. He may end up being solid after he gets more work but he has a problem coming at him in January. A very talented, more polished stud in Allar. Will be interesting to see how it plays out. My guess is CV and Allar are 1A and 1B going into the season and both play significant time as freshman eligibility players. They both play until 1 takes over.

Add to that a defensive line that routinely gave up three yard QB sneaks.

That's two fold.

Need to get stronger.

Need to go head up on the C or both DTs in the A gap on short yardage.

Teams have done it with 1 yard to go all year, but BB must have seen it was worth trying on 2-3 yards out as well.

Get rid of the rpo and problem will be solved. Lineman have to hold their blocks an extra second, and it seems we do it so stinking slow.

Who knows if the kid received enough coaching to execute the play properly.
I will take the missed 40 yard FG and the sure TD dropped by Theo. I am quite sure we practice fg's and slant patterns regularly. The game plan sucked...but do these 2 things and we are here bitching, but it would have been after a W.

Since it's vent day, there's one other thing that bugs me.....I don't like all the audibles/changes being made. Several times, SC got ready to go then suddenly started pointing and waving like he detected some defensive vulnerability to exploit. I started edging forward expecting an explosive play attempt, and then he handed it off for an inside run that was stuffed. Like, WTH was that? Meanwhile, the OL gets up to the line and has to stay set while SC gives 2 or 3 sets of claps, looks to the sideline and audibles are being barked. To me, it stymies offensive momentum. I'd rather they call the play, hustle to the line, and run the darn play.

That entire post game presser had me asking “what planet is JF on?” It seemed like he took this loss to terrible team in stride. Like “so what”.

Why is this guy being paid 7.5 million a year? For what?

Sorry, he’s not “elite”, not even close. He’s lost.
It’s time

Ahhh, I believe Dotson is the number 1 rated receiver in the upcoming draft?

Q: On Thursday night, you said you put a lot of time into the running game, during the bye week and this past week, and that you felt comfortable with it. Can you put your finger on why it wasn't quite clicking again this game?
A: Again, I think the combination of guys that did not practice, a combination of a wet day, the threat of the past not being there, a limited Sean, all of it factored in. You can't go from heavy pass to heavy run in one week. You got to be able to be mixed and be balanced, and we weren't able to do that today.

.
Did he not know on Thursday that Sean would be limited? Sounds like more excuses rather than just saying, we should have done a better job having our backup ready to start so Sean could rest up. It was pretty obvious after the first series Sean was limited. How do you not know this and as a coach plan accordingly???

So instead he blames the weather for the abysmal running game? When Illinois ran for over 300 and when we haven’t been able to run it all season. I guess it doesn’t really matter if he has a different attitude inside the locker room, but I worry that part of the reason we have such a soft team year in and year out is because these types of comments are reflective of Franklin’s true personality and coaching style.
franklin that was a poor ass excuse for a team you didnt get ready to play!!

It became obvious early on that, for all intents and purposes, Illinois didn't have a QB either...yet they ran for 357 yds. And this against the backdrop of 86 total yds of offense last week against Wisky...at home.

They lost to a 24 point underdog at home. No conjecture about that.

IMHO, PSU did not deserve to be a 24 pt favorite, given the condition of this team. 24 pt favorite or more would be appropriate 3 weeks ago, but now we are among the worst teams int the BIG given the team health - i.e. I don't think the 7 man line ILL was running would not have been nearly impactful with PJ playing and Ellies not playing hurt.

Yes, the players deserve the blame yesterday too. Despite the poor coaching and game plan, I can count about 3-4 situations on the top of my head if a player just executed his job correctly....we win.
You mean "win ugly." PSU posted a loss as a 23 pt favorite, at home, against a 2-5 team with some very bad losses on its schedule. Unprepared, unfocused, uninspired, unled -- uncoached.

A couple of points on this^^^^^well said
1. Paterno wanted Jim Kelly to play linebacker as one example.
2. Line play was the emphasis on both sides of the ball.
3. The marvels of modern medicine must have found a cure for The Penn State Flu.
4. Penn State used to be known as a bully. A great thing in football.

Yessir! Strength travels quicker than speed. High end balance of both is what needs to be achieved. There is a reason KC was using a 6th OL at times last year over a TE.

Also, trying to line up in a power set on 3rd and 2 late is not how you get confidence built. Try that on 1st and 10. 2nd and 8.

Gotta be tough when it's nitty gritty. We were vs Wisky and Auburn. Not vs Iowa and Illinois.

Was there something missing against Iowa and Illinois that wasn’t missing against Wiscy and Auburn? Hmm, I wonder.

Offensively, Clifford. Obvious.

Defensively, PJ. Obvious.

Injuries are part of the game. Being a stronger team does not hurt. Even at full strength, we've not successfully run the ball. I wanted to believe we could go all year without needing to and now we've had 7 quarters in a row of our 9 worst offensive quarters of the year.

It's going to be tough to win every game going forward scoring 10.

So why are we only going to score 10 every game going forward? We were doing okay prior to Clifford’s injury. He will continue to heal, so he will continue to play better. I certainly hope people with your attitude stop watching the rest of the season, I mean you’ve given up the year already so go do something else with your time.

This is a good point. For someone who’s ultimate strength is allegedly his recruiting prowess, where are the quarterbacks? Where are the stud D lineman? Where are the road grader offensive linemen? Where is the back with breakaway speed?

I guess the recruiting rankings are just making it up.

I will watch every game that I'm able to. Acknowledging improvement doesn't mean I should give up.

I'm curious when SC is going to get healthy. I'm not going to MNACQB it, but I'm going to hope SC is healthier this Saturday than he was last Saturday. At our best and healthiest, we were going to need our A+ game to beat the Buckeyes. We don't have the ability to run the ball and that has given the Buckeyes fits against Oregon and Minnesota.

I'm hoping Saturday spurned a fire. Usually we get up for the Buckeyes regardless of where we are ranked. It's going to take one hell of a game plan.
