I think we already knew this, but good press today . . .

Ever since the Fraser Centre opened in downtown State College in 2016, rumors have quietly swirled about the colorful tile wall that runs along the Fraser Street side of the 13-story building, beneath the entrance to Target and Federal Taphouse.

While there appears to be no obvious rhyme or reason to the haphazard multicolored design, it turns out that there is indeed something to the rumors, according to Gary Brandeis, one of the building’s co-developers and president of Real Estate Capital Management in Ardmore.

Before revealing the details, Brandeis explained, “Because of the slope of the site from Beaver Avenue down to Calder Way, in order to achieve the design goals of the building we had to build a retaining wall on Fraser Street. Under the (State College) Borough’s building codes, we had to put something on the retaining wall that was considered art.”

Brandeis, a 1988 graduate of Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, held a brainstorming session with his architect to come up with an idea for some artwork that might be appropriate.

“We decided to do this multicolored wall. There’s a base blue background tile, and then interspersed through that background are 409 other color tiles, representing the 409 football games that the Penn State football team won under Coach Paterno,” he said. “So each colored tile is the school color of a team Penn State defeated. They’re placed in random order, in a way that we felt looked good.”

Maryland, Indiana, Rutgers, Alabama, USC (sort of), Georgia (once), Nebraska, Boston College (sort of), Arizona State (once or twice), Stanford.

Those are my guesses.

Did we ever beat Stanford?
I only remember playing them once in that horrid bowl game.
Also doen't forget Wiscy. not as often as the Red teams from the big east but still.

Early 1970s. Mike Boryla was their QB. I think we played them home and home. Yes, Wisky. Knew I forgot someone. Joe beat Wisky a couple of times.

PSU beat Stanford in a four game series 1973 through 1976. With the bowl loss in 1993 the record is 4-1.

PSU played at Stanford in '73, then played the next 3 seasons at PSU as the opener each season, I think. Stanford started classes later than we did, and brought their band a day or two early for at least the '74 game if not the others.
Anyway, the Stanford band, known to be not so traditional, marched through campus, bursting into classes (The Forum among them) horns a-blarin', and their twirlers would dance around in their twirler unitards (or whatever they are called?), much to the delight of the guys in the classes and anyone with a sense of fun. They were a fave visiting team for those three seasons.

Not much to compare to that until USC came to town ~20 years later in '93 and '94 with their Song Girls post-game dancing show in the NE corner of the field.

Good times.
