Some love for the Fraser Centre . . . 409 . . .

PSU played at Stanford in '73, then played the next 3 seasons at PSU as the opener each season, I think. Stanford started classes later than we did, and brought their band a day or two early for at least the '74 game if not the others.
Anyway, the Stanford band, known to be not so traditional, marched through campus, bursting into classes (The Forum among them) horns a-blarin', and their twirlers would dance around in their twirler unitards (or whatever they are called?), much to the delight of the guys in the classes and anyone with a sense of fun. They were a fave visiting team for those three seasons.

Not much to compare to that until USC came to town ~20 years later in '93 and '94 with their Song Girls post-game dancing show in the NE corner of the field.

Good times.

I remember the Stanford band in '76 because of their centennial salute to America. Yeah, centennial. They addressed the Battle of Little Bighorn and had a special formation of telegraph poles honoring the erection of large shafts across the Great Plains. They were a unique group.

I remember the first time Stanford band played at Beaver Stadium. They basically just ran helter skelter from formation to formation. Several band members dressed in funny costumes. The one piece of "marching" they did was when their public address announcer declared that the band would now represent the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam. While the band was playing some song I don't remember and facing the east sideline, four band members neatly marched from the formation to the east sideline. From the west sideline, eight band members in fatigues hunched low and scrambled across the field until they each slipped into the formation.

As soon as they can get Pat to stop eating the urinal cakes.

Wouldn’t it have been more appropriate to have 409 tiles in blue and white representing home and away victories and then the alternate colors to represent the teams we lost to? Maybe more literal, as opposed to more appropriate, I guess. Bowl games could be silver, and national championships gold...
