I was a freshman and remember Mondock's last game at SCA. He made an impassioned speech at the half against Frackville about his father being at the game. I believe Southern won 6-0. He gave the game ball to Mick. Of course none of us knew that he would later leave Southern. After we showered our buses stopped at a restaurant in Ashland where the band and cheerleaders awaited and the boosters bought us food. My future wife (who was a majorette) and I held hands and walked the streets and I got the courage to steal a kiss.
Many years later, with our adult sons in the car, we passed the spot and I told them about our first kiss. My late wife had no memory of the occasion.
She was a beautiful girl and I'm sure that wasn't nearly the moment for her that it was for me. I never loved anyone else from the day I first saw her in the 7th grade.
