On the Obligatory Pre Game Show someone made the comment that PSU is 123rd in the nation on starting field position. That's probably why PSU only scored 7 in the 1st half vs Illinois, 6 in the 1st half vs USC, and 7 in the first half vs Wisconsin.

Thompson isn't great but he's OK. Is it because out defense allows drives to mid field?

It's a lot of the defense allowing drives before stopping them, but we also do a bang-up job of not flipping the field by going 3 and out. It's kinda like we play rope a dope until they tire out ... and sometimes we end up being the dope.

What's our 3rd down conversion allowed rate in 1st halves? Seems like it's silly high. We get them 3rd and long and then allow a slant for the 1st. Then another 1st. Then maybe we decide to stop them, at which point we're back at our 20 or worse, rather than at our 40.

We may want to gamble against OSU and show them our soft coverage pre-snap, but try to jump some routes early. Get the momentum on our side and play the game downhill from there.

Defense is allowing drives, turnovers are down, TFLs and sacks are down, and our punt return game hasn't been anything special. It's a number of factors that when viewed individually none look to be a huge deal but it's having a cumulative effect on field position which is costing us points despite being a team that doesn't punt all that often.

Halftime defensive adjustments have been great. But Allen needs to figure it out more than a little bit quicker and make some needed moves before good teams get too many possessions.
PSU will be in deep crap if it falls two scores behind the Buckeyes.
