I listened to some of Steve's show on ESPN 1450 in SC today. Among the topics discussed was Michigan football in relation to Wiscy, OSU and PSU.
Steve went through a lot of the stats that many of us on this board have been discussing for a couple years - namely the dominance of the rivalry game by OSU, UM's lack of a BIG championship in 15 years, annual late season swoons, etc etc despite pretty good recruiting classes. In the final analysis, Steve said that Michigan is a very good football team and a very dangerous football team on any given Saturday. However, they are not a great team.
He said that Penn State has eclipsed Michigan and is now a great team. PSU is really the only team that can compete with OSU. Penn State's next step is to become an elite team, win the BIG and get into the CFP.
Steve also committed an unpardonable BIG sin by saying Bo Schembechler was not a great coach based on his bowl record (5-12) and lack of national championships. He was a good coach, but not a great coach. He also said that Harbaugh is a good, but not great coach. He also said Michigan hasn't been very good since Lloyd Carr stepped down. As I remember it, Michigan fans wanted Carr out and thought they were going to land Les Miles. It didn't happen and they had to settle for RRod, and then Brady Hoke until finally the savior Harbaugh came to Ann Arbor.
Steve also said it was ridiculous how high Michigan is always rated in the preseason.
Speaking of overrated teams, Steve also said Notre Dame is no longer a great team. Like Michigan, they are a very good team but not a great or elite team. He said the casual fan is starting to lose interest in ND. His proof: the TV ratings for Cotton Bowl and the Camping World Bowl were on at the same time (noon on Saturday). Usually PSU and ND have among the biggest TV followings of anyone. Something like 6.2 million watched PSU while only 4.2 million watched the Domers.
Finally, he discussed Nebraska and how delusional their fans and the writers were about Nebraska returning to glory and being ranked 24th preseason and favored to win the the BIG West. He said it would take at least six years for Scot Frost to return to form (if they ever do it). I got the impression Steve thinks Nebraska might not be able to get back - Wiscy, Iowa and now Minny aren't going anywhere and will make it very tough for anyone to dominate.
I also listened to some of the Goon and Ironhead show. Goon essentially said he was amazed at how much hype Michigan gets based on their record for the past 15 years. Goon is also psyched for the Iowa game in the Palestra and will be in attendance.
