Talking to strangers

I shouted “we are!!!” To a guy in Australia wearing a penn state sweatshirt. He came over and said “what the ****, cun*?” (Term of endearment). Turns out he bought the shirt at a flea market and had no idea what penn state was.

I was in line at a Best Buy in Anchorage Alaska in August 2005. The guy in front of me was wearing a Penn State hat.

Me: "Nice hat"
Him: -------
Me: "Are you an alum"
Him: "What does that mean?"
Me: "Did you go to college at Penn State? Your hat says 'Penn State'"
Him: (taking hat off and looking at it): "Oh, is that what it says? I just grabbed it from the house this morning. I bought it at a going out of business sale in Wasilla".
Me: ---------

Nice day today so I took a walk at lunch in downtown Minneapolis. Saw a guy with a good looking PSU sweatshirt.
Me - Hey, that’s my school.
Him - Minnesota State?
Me - No, Penn State.
Him - Oh yeah, someone gave me the sweatshirt. Thought it said Minnesota State.
Me (to myself) - Did that just really happen?
Wasn’t that Coach’s school?

Pulling my golfs behind me I see a guy coming off the practice range wearing a Penn State shirt. I yell WE ARE! Everyone on the range turns around to look at me. The guy returns a blank stare. I go...did you go to Penn State? He goes...no man...just a shirt. I crawled back into my hole.

Walked past a girl at the grocery store in a Penn State hoodie. I smile and gave her a "We Are!" and she proceeded to give me the strangest, ugliest stink eye I've ever received without saying a word as she kept walking. I assume she was wearing her boyfriend's shirt or at the minimum did not go there.

She is probably on a message board somewhere telling this story in a thread about "Most odd pickup line someone has tried" and has no idea I was not hitting on her.

It's because of a girl in a Penn State hoodie walking through a mall that I ended up going to Penn State. It was March of 1982, I was down to Penn State or Syracuse, and I was leaning towards Syracuse. They had a decent Chem Eng program, a guy who was a couple of years ahead of me in high school was in the program and liked it.

Was walking through the local mall, and saw a really cute (not hot) strawberry blonde girl with huge.....eyes....walking the other way, and she was giggling with some friends (male and female). She had on a Penn State hoodie and it just looked really great on her. Something just struck me about her, and I probably figured - well, there are probably more like that where she came from.

Went home that day and told my parents that I have decided to attend Penn State. That girl has no idea how she affected me and my future. And now, here I am telling you guys this story.

Great story. My dad was in the army stationed in Germany during my high school years. We had no TV over there and only 1 American radio station. Late November of 1968, during my Senior year, I heard on the radio about this college football team with the longest non losing streak. Penn State coached by Joe Paterno. It was like I got hit by a bolt of lightening. I decided right there that I wanted to go to Penn State. Turned out to be a longer journey then I thought to get to Penn State. I ended up going to Monterey Penisula College to get my AA degree before transferring to Penn State. That day I set a goal and eventually I achieved that goal. Never regretted a day.

I met a kid last night at a hotel in Iowa. He was with a group of athletes wearing matching warmups. I asked him what sport and he told me ice hockey. Turns out he’s a PSU recruit and will be wearing #19 next season. I had a nice chat with him and talked about the team and the arena. Gave him a We Are and wished him luck.

Half the time I do a We Are to a stranger it turns out to be weird. But I do it anyway.

Some people look ashamed like I'm outing them. Can't blame 'em.

The weirdest is the guy with the PSU pick-up truck I gave a shout out to at a light and it turns out he's friend with my mom from the alumni association down here. There's a lot of cars around here but I see him every now and then. Good dude.

The only time I ever ran into a pitt fan whilst wearing gear was by the dumpster at my old apartment complex. Go figure.

I throw the Flag on RO. Need a pic of a cute blonde co-ed in a PSU hoodie or face the wrath of the BWI Board !!

The requirement for providing a photo of a woman discussed on the board is null and void if said woman was encountered more than 35 years prior to the date of the post.

What brings you to Iowa?

To attend a board meeting at a company in Des Moines. Its just a quick 2 night trip and then back home. I do it 4 times a year, and it’s not my favorite destination but I like the company. The restaurants suck.

I was serving dinner at a soup kitchen in Durham, N.C., when a woman wearing a Penn State Tennis shirt came through the line. I asked her if she went to PSU, but she said it was just a shirt she picked up somewhere. I was relieved. I'm glad a Penn State grad wasn't staying at the homeless shelter.

Not the first time you - or most of us - have been saved by the ol' 35-year statute of limitations.....

In that case a drawing from memory will do.

I love the story about F&M people traveling in Europe and being amazed at all the people wearing their gear . Turns out an Italian company loved the word combo and pretty much ripped off Franklin & Marshall. I don’t know if it’s still big, but 5 years ago you’d see tons of Footballers wearing F&M stuff

Interesting! I bought two magnificent Mitchell and Ness NFL jerseys at a flea market in Sydney. One was a Franco Harris Super Bowl X with the Bicentennial patch and one was a Tony Dorsett Cowboys jersey that I gave to a good friend who would appreciate it.

The jerseys weren't "knockoffs", they were more like "factory seconds" (think "X Out" Titleist golf balls). There was a ton of USA sports memorabilia at this flea market. I really could have made some money if I had been willing to invest time, capital, etc. into the effort. I think Australia is a dumping ground for a lot of these "factory seconds" that are made in China because they can unload them without getting blowback from the NFL and other entities.

So, now, I need to get this thing autographed by Franco. Right! He actually sat 1 row back across the aisle at the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops! shows for years but my wife used full "veto" power on me asking him to autograph it at Heinz Hall. I finally had him autograph it at one of the "After Further Review" events put on by Ray B., John Z., Anthony L. and others. Franco loved my story about the Australian flea market and thanked me for not fuc#ing with him at Heinz Hall.

You guys are lucky. Usually when I shout out “We Are!”, the response is “Go f*ck yourself!”

Life hinges on some very small details.

About five years ago, my wife and I took our daughter out to eat here in Florida. We went to a restaurant, probably the best in the area, and as I stood in line to put our name on the wait list, I noticed the man two spots ahead of me was wearing a Penn State shirt (with the Penn State name on the back just under the collar). I was going to give him a “We Are” when he turned around, but I wasn’t quite able to. He turned around and I was stunned to be standing face to face w/ Russ Rose.
