Could someone point me in the right direction for identifying the team advancement, bonus and placing points structure at the NCAA tournament? My friends and I are looking to start a fantasy draft for Cleveland, and I'd like print out the point structure for use in our draft. Thanks

Black Shoe Diaries did a good one last year, should be able to google it.

Placement:

8th - 3
7th - 4
6th - 6
5th - 7
4th - 9
3rd - 10
2nd - 12
Title - 16

Advancement:
Winners bracket: 1 point per win
Wrestlebacks: 0.5 point per win

Bonus:
1 - major
1.5 - tech fall
2 - pin, DQ, MFF

I'll give it a crack.

Advancement:
A wrestlers scores for his team 1 advancement point in championship bracket for each win (except for a finals win that gets no advancement points) and 1/2 point for each win in consolations

Bonus points:
2 points for each fall, Forfeit or Injury default
1 1/2 points for tech fall
1 point for Major decision

Placement:
1st 16 points
2nd 12
3rd 10
4th 9
5th 7
6th 6
7th 4
8th 3
I think that covers it. Someone can chime in if I missed something.

As an example:

2017 NCAAs

Zain.

4 TFs (6 pts)
1 WBF (2 pts)
4 winners bracket advancement pts
16 for winning the title

Zain scored 28 pts last year.

Another example

Nick Nevills / 2017 NCAAs

Won first two matches per DEC (2 pts)
Lost quarterfinal
Won two wrestleback matches (DEC) (1 pt total)
Worst possible finish = 6th. (6 pts)
Lost to Walz
Wrestled for 5th place and won (1 extra point going from 6th min to 5th)

Nevills scored 10 pts at NCAAs last year.

When are the placement points awarded? For example when the two wrestlers are guaranteed to wrestle for 3/4th place do each wrestler get 4th place placement points and then the winner picks up the extra points for 3rd. Or, do they wait until after the match to award the placement points?

You get 4th place points as soon as you've guaranteed 4th. Then you get the delta for 3rd once you win that match.

Another example: you get 6th place points as soon as you win quarters.

Scores tabulate the minimum placement ASAP

So if a PSU wrestler wins a quarterfinal on Friday morning, the absolute worst that wrestler can finish is 6th.

So their point total gets a 6 added for a minimum 6 place, plus 1 for advancement, plus whatever bonus.

That’s why Friday is “moving day”.

Huge point jumps for the winners of quarters & semi matches.

Saturday morning can be moving day too, in my book. A team without a lot of finalists can make hay in wrestle-backs. It's a numbers game, one we saw play out in 2013, when Okie State made their run on Saturday Morning, with 2 Majors and a Fall, to go with 3 third place finishes (requiring 2 wins Saturday Morning), and a fifth place finish. Maybe not the points handed out Friday, though my experience is that fans discount the points earned in the wrestle-back bracket. It's a big deal.

does anyone else think that bonus points in the consi bracket shoule be cut in half similar to the advancement points?

Thanks for the information gentlemen. This message board never lets me down when I have a rookie question for all of you.

Not sure if this will help your fantasy draft--it might if you'd like to keep an updated score after each session (by crediting team points immediately at the time they are earned), but here's a scoring sheet for PSU & tOSU from B1Gs this weekend.

Here's what Zain's final score sheet looks like:

hCPrpjM.png

And here's Nolf's:
35LFnA9.png

As others pointed out above, Nolf sent 6 Placement Points to his team after his Quarterfinals win, b/c at that point (by reaching the semis), he'd earned at least a 6th place finish (worth 6pts). As it turned out, that was the end of his scoring.

That Pistols Firing blog's synopsis is pretty thorough and nicely organized. Here are a few other notes:
- Note that Zain did not earn any Advancement Points for his win over Sorenson (who now has 9 career losses, 6 to Zain). Advancement Points are not awarded in final placement bouts e.g. the last bout of your tourney, regardless of outcome (presumably since you are no longer advancing forward laterally in the bracket--only vertically, up a step on the podium ;)

- Also note that Zain earned an Advancement Point for his first round Bye at Big Tens:
a. Only b/c he won his next match. If he hadn't, that first Bye Adv Point also would have never been credited.

b. It wasn't credited to the Team Score, timing-wise, until he did win that next match. This is most often the culprit when my home-scoring score doesn't align with published scores from the arena, after a session or two.

c. There are no byes at Nationals. Pigtail bouts to accommodate that 33rd wrestler still exist, but gone are the days of everybody without a pigtail earning a Bye Advancement Point by winning their first match in Round One

Here's one more, so you can see some consi scoring:
k390p0H.png

Roar talked above about 'making hay' in the Consis, and Keener did just that! He Scored 5.5 of his 7.5 total in one round, the Consi R12:
- Earned .5 Advancement Points for moving forward in the consi bracket
- Earned 3 Placement Points for guaranteeing at least an 8th place finish
- Earned 2 big Bonus Points for the pin

I added in the text about qualifying for Nationals, b/c the B1G only had 7 allocated spots at 133, so he needed that big win. At Nationals, he would have already turned green in my coding, b/c he had already earned All-American.

Glad you're getting into the scoring! Roar & NoVa each helped me a ton when I first got into it. Lastly, I'll mention that the PSU Wrestling Club site is generally pretty good for following live tourney scoring (the html brackets become a little difficult to read/scroll), and a little birdie told me scoring enthusiasts might be very excited to stay tuned for a new Open Mat feature in this department.

Good luck with your fantasy tourney! If it's not too much trouble, I personally would love to read a post you make describing how you set it up and score it out. Pax, jp

when did the NCAA go away from enabling a 'bye' to score bonus points based on the next round result? For example, I get a bye round one, get a fall round 2 - I then get bonus points for round 2 (the fall) but it replicated for round 1 - so at this point I have 4 bonus points scored after round 2. Just curious.

2013, win and a free advancement point was given. Win in the first round of wrestle-backs, and an extra half-point was given. Both of course if a wrestler doesn't already have that extra bout.

Basically went from a 64-man bracket, with 15 byes, to a 32-man bracket with a pigtail. There are no more "byes".

And if I'm understanding your example...bonus points were never doubled.

Just to clarify Roar's answer:
- the Bye Advancement Point was awarded during the 2012 tourney
- it was not awarded in the 2013 tourney

Impacts to Career Scores:
- Cael earned it all 4 years of his tourneys, which totaled 111.5
- Taylor earned if 2 out of 4 years (101 total)
- Ruth earned it 2 out of 4 years (96.5 total)
- Stieber earned it 1 out of 3 years (104.5 total)

Normalized to subtract those Bye Advancement Points, Stieber came really close to Cael:
-------Adv / Bonus / Placement
Cael: 16 / 27.5 / 64 = 107.5
Stieber: 16 / 23.5 / 64 = 103.5

thanks Roar! We ran some HS district tournaments where we made byes random but carried the bonus point as I depicted.

Thanks for the career impact stuff, jto!! Minor typo...Stieber was "1 out of 4 years".

Perhaps reduced to some extent, but I don't want to be dealing with quarter points.

The system currently in place has seemily done a pretty good job identifying champions and best teams.
