Technique my ass! We need ROAD-GRADERS! BIG Uglies! Coach Trautwein & his boys are NOT getting it done!

This whole thread is just so funny to me. PSU's offense has been a mess pretty much for three years. By the second year of that nice out-of-his-depth dude who went to ODU, the PSU offense was capable of running possibly 5 or 6 plays, and McSorley and receivers were playing like they had maybe met each other once at a party.

Now for the first time since Joe Moorhead we actually have high level offensive coaching that puts the ball where the other team is short defensive players, we have a QB and receivers playing with confidence and attacking. And for the first time in Franklin's entire tenure we have an OL that can pass block at a high level.

So naturally Penn State fans spend all their time complaining about the lack of a running game.
Concern isn't complain.

This team seems good to great in every aspect except run blocking where it looks dismal. It makes sense to be concerned about it.

Failing to pick up first downs in short yardage situations will likely cost the team a couple games if this continues. Auburn game is a blowout if they pick up those two failed 4th and 1s and they probably lose if Noah Cain doesn't avoid the safety by an inch. I would personally just give up on it and go extremely pass-heavy on offense. Running when the other team is expecting it has been an utter disaster. At a certain point, it's time to accept defeat and adapt your strategy to the strengths of your team. The pass blocking is as good as I can remember. Franklin needs to go look at some Mike Leach box scores for inspiration(https://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore/_/gameId/400869141) and then roll with what the team does best.

Story on run-pass productivity ratio in modern college football...currently Penn State's run-pass splits are pretty much in line with what Yurcich's Oklahoma State offenses did...and those teams obviously never had a complementary stellar D like Penn State has...my only concern with the lack of a run game is what happens if/when we get 2008 Iowa (45 mph wind) weather conditions one game this season. Not worried about rain or snow, because Clifford throws a wet ball decently. It's wind.

Dominate the line of scrimmage?

Hell, we can't even dominate a 1-yard first down when need it or a QB sneak for Pete's sake!

Future problems against more quality competition for sure folks!

We got trouble right here in River City!!!

:mad::mad::mad:

Blow people OFF the ball you say?

Maybe with the help of a hurricane now being formed in the Atlantic Ocean maybe!!
I would love for us to be able to run for 200 yards every game, but I also feel the concern about the run game is overblown. We were able to convert on 3rd and short against both Wisconsin and Auburn,; in fact, we were able to finish off big drives in both of those games by running it in. I am not saying the line couldn’t be better, but the issues we had against Auburn were more a product of some of the play calls. The bottom line is this, it is far more important you are able to throw the ball in today’s game. Great defenses can almost always take away the run if they want to.

Agreed to a point sir.

But, wide-zone blocking can't get you a first down when you need to PUSH the defender 1 yard further down the field.

We got problems.
As I mention in another post, when Penn State needed to finish off the final touchdown drives against Wisconsin and Auburn, they ran it in both games. The run game can be better, but it has not been as bad as many seem to feel it is.

I agree
Because people reference the Facebook in a thread that actually addresses the football team. Pot/kettle.
I agree....not being able to have an effective running game against Villanova was very disappointing. Back in the 70s, 80s, and even into the early 90s, PSU had strong offensive lines and produced many All Americans. For the past 20 years, that's been more of the exception than the norm - and this despite signing many 4-star and even some 5-star recruits for the OL positions. I don't get what the problem is. Wisconsin, OSU, Iowa, BC, and many other schools produce a lot more and better OLs and individual talent at the positions. Yes, the pass protection has been okay, but run blocking is unacceptable. If the team can't keep the better teams honest on defense, this will eventually come back to bite them. One dimensional offensive teams tend to to be exposed eventually.

Where is Sean Farrell when you need him?

LOL!!

Think some of the issue come from Trautwein playing Limegrover recruits. Limegrover wanted lineman that could play all 5 positions. Trautwein is looking lineman who are pure guards or pure tackles. Different philosophy on player body types and techniques.
