1) There should be no doubt after the Scuffle, who’s the team to beat for the national championship. This was a dominating performance by PSU. Five champions, a second place, two fifth place finishers and a seventh place finisher. –All that without a viable heavyweight.

2) You’ve got to be impressed with PSU’s backups. With Moss, Beitz and the two 165 backups (whoever that turns out to be).

3) Conaway really impressed me. This goes to show how much he has improved over the year. Sure, he was dominated in the finals, but it was against Garrett who absolutely destroyed everyone else in the draw. Conaway actually gave him his toughest match, losing 14-4.

4) Retherford is a devastating wrestler. If he kills someone in a match, can they arrest him for manslaughter?

5) Nolf is awesome, but seemed a little tense in his match with Smith. Still Smith didn’t have enough to take Nolf in one of his least impressive outings. That says a lot about Nolf.

6) Even before this tournament I felt that Nickal was greatly underrated. He impressed me more than anyone else in the tournament. The guy made some amazing moves. He is clearly the fastest (quickest) wrestler in the heavier weights. He is not afraid to make some risky moves (which may cost him someday), but he scrambles as well as anyone and usually comes out on top. Nickal won the outstanding wrestler and I am not surprised.

7) The 165 question may not be settled after this, but I am impressed with each of them. I think Rasheed has the most upside. He is very quick and flexible. He was toe to toe with the finalist Massa until he tried to fix his head gear and Massa dove in and took him down for the winning points. In the consolations he defeated #5 seed Faust. Morelli is a bull. He got one round further in the championship draw and took fifth overall. Not to be overlooked, Hammond pinned three opponents and majored two others in route to a 7th place finish.

8) I usually don’t award a tournament jerk award, but this year’s winner was a compelling choice. Joseph Smith (son of Oklahoma State coach Smith) wins this award hands down. At the beginning of the championship match, when Nolf reached out to shake hands, Smith just slapped Nolf’s hand away. (Was he taking a clue from the Maryland football players?) Then during the match he grabbed and pulled Nolf’s hair and scalp. I believe that’s supposed to be a 1 pt. penalty, but the ref didn’t do anything. Finally, at the podium presentations, guess who didn’t show up? Mr. Smith. Now, that’s real sportsmanship – Oklahoma State style.

9) The rumor going around the Scuffle was that Marsteller was kicked off the OSU team for drinking and smoking. What? When the coach cannot even control his own son, how can he manage others on the team?

10) This was my first time at the Scuffle. This is a great tourney and I’m planning to return again next year.

Wow...I know you said it's a rumor but damn...Marsteller "kicked off the team?" That's hard to believe but then again he hasn't done much this year so I can see Smith saying "see ya later, bye"...

Interesting post. Some initial thoughts:

[1] PSU may be the favorite, but not prohibitively. If Hunter Stieber is able to wrestle near his capability, Ohio State will be VERY tough, with Myles Martin now at 174 and Kyle Snyder at 285. Okie State will be a big factor if they wrestle Joe Smith at 157 and assuming that Kaid Brock's recent injury is not severe. And you can never count out Iowa, though I consider Ohio State and Okie State as bigger threats. Since PSU will likely get nothing out of 285, the question mark at 141 becomes really important to resolve.

[5] Pretty sure that Nolf looking less impressive in the finals match had a lot to do with the quality of his opponent (Joe Smith). Also, as someone else mentioned, Nolf didn't seem comfortable trying to protect a slim lead in the 3rd period, something he is very much not accustomed to.

[8] Interesting. Had not seen or heard of those actions from Joe Smith. There's no excuse to not shake hands (the ref should have forced him to, even if he didn't want to), and I never like it when guys don't show up at the podium. IMO, it's disrespectful to all the other guys who do.

[9] This one is silly IMO. If a wrestler chooses to break team rules, there isn't much a coach can do to stop the kid. The coach is not a 24 hour baby sitter.

Excellent analysis, I agree 100%...

There must have been someone who looked just like him that was in the photo of the medal stand on OSU wrestlings Twitter. Or maybe he got all the medal winners to get together and pose a photo later.

Also pretty sure his hand just got caught in Nolfs headgear. He didn't slap Nolfs hand away, he just slapped hands instead of doing a handshake. He probably should have shaken hands, but the magnitude of the match probably got the best of him. Just a little excited.

Also if having a player break team rules means the coach is not managing them correctly then I don't think any coaches are managing their wrestlers well. Every team has kids mess up.

I don't think PSU is THE favorite to win nationals; PSU with Okie State, Iowa and tOSU are all in the mix. If we can well at 141 and 184 we will be in a great position to win. Here are my top 5 positives/concerns:

Top 5 positives are easy:
1). Nico - see his Flowrestling interview. Believes he has finally gotten to the point where he is implementing the techniques he has been practicing; states that the NLO is where he felt it started. Interesting comment that he doesn't think freestyle is all that helpful in preparing to wrestle folkstyle. Nico had a great Scuffle and will compete for that NC.

2). Zain - a truly impressive Scuffle. For those wrapped around the axle regarding the BJ match, this tournament should address all your concerns. The man to beat at nationals.

3). Jason - circle Jan 23 on your calendars. Nolf vs Imar. See his Flowrestling interview; believes he can beat anyone. Acknowledges he was tentative in the 3rd period against JoJo; seemed surprised that JoJo was still aggressive in the 3rd period. I don't think it will be that close in a rematch.

4). Bo - OW at the Scuffle; definitely deserved the recognition. See his Flowrestling interview; a class act. I was confident Bo would be good, I just didn't appreciate he would be this good, this fast. His comments about how much he has improved over last year given the talent he wrestles at Penn State is noteworthy.

5). Morgan - the championship match was close, but otherwise Morgan was impressive at the Scuffle.

Top 5 concerns:
1). Gulibon - is he still injured or is it something else? PSU needs someone to score points at 141. Moss can make nationals this year, I believe, if he is the starter, but once there I don't think he goes very far. Gulibon has always been hard to figure out and this year is no different. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in January.

2). McCutcheon - second tournament, second tournament he leaves with back issues. A week after his back issues at the NLO, he looked very good at the Wisconsin meet. He seemed to dial it back against Rider. If his back issues prevent him from going deep in a tournament setting, that is a team scoring problem.

3). 165 - don't envy Cael this challenge. I like Rasheed as the starter; most aggressive, most raw talent, most in need of fine tuning his skills. Morelli finshed the highest (5th place) BUT Hammond (7th place) scored the most points which were used in the team score. The B1G starter may not be announced until right before the tournament.

4). Joseph - second tournament; second tournament not making weight. Something isn't right here.

5). HWT - kudos to Johnson for filling in where the team had a big need. Have to worry whether Nevills will ever wear a PSU singlet. Two years on the team, two years with significant injuries. Cael's challenge will be as long as NN is on the roster, he will be hard pressed to recruit a top notch HWT (unless it is NN's brothers). Option 2 is grow a HWT internally (i.e., Cassar).

You have to love the aggressive wrestling style Cael and the coaches preach and teach their wrestlers. We're posed to have a great year, but there are some concerns. Great Scuffle by the team!

There were a LOT of wrestlers who were late to the award presentations (probably one of them for at least half the weight classes)...several of us on press row were joking that I should have jumped onto the championship stand at one of the weights.

Lion-around: For what it's worth, I'd HATE to be the scoreboard operator in Champaign that day. I think he'll get gassed more quickly than either Nolf or iMar.

LOVE Lion Style...if people see somebody shopping for both real estate in Centre County, and more grey sweat suits than the two I already have, just assume that I've taken a job in the Penn State marketing department pro bono...This team is #NotLionAround...

Indiana, you are a nitwit, so many things you said are false. I don't have the time to go over all of them. About one thing you said was correct about the OSU team, Nolf had his hands full with Joe. Also want to say there was quite a few of you standing up for OSU and our coach, "shows a lot of class"

Nickal is starting to remind me more-&-more of Q. Wright. Does not look like an over-powering wrestler in the upper weights - has more of a "finesse / technical style" appearance about him, but he does surprise you when he decides to show his strength. Nickal is the full package - finesse, strength, etc... - very similar to a Ruth or Wright in the upper weights. Will be interesting to see whether he stays at 174 or moves up like the others.

Smith got to the podium, although late got there. CP said on the coverage he was pulling tape from his shoes as he ran to the podium.

I know Smith does not tolerate marijuana use as he's kicked really good guys off his team for it but idk if that's the case with Marsteller Tognetti said he was in the dog house as for why don't know but he was in the practice room with everyone else working out a day before they left for the scuffle

Penn State did have a very strong showing at the Scuffle, but dominating win? Oklahoma State had a decent showing also, and if Smith had been a point scorer the difference would have been the Nolf/Smith winner.

Come March the Lions are going to be very difficult to beat, but Okie State, Ohio State and Iowa will all be right there with the Lions.

+1 It's gonna be a dogfight but very entertaining to watch! Hope our guys can pull it off.

Oklahoma water is bad.
Takes 10 years to adjust to it.
Like what happens when you eat Juarez street tacos.
Marsteller gotta get the hell out, fast.

Before John becomes the saint of discipline with his athletes, I would say more kids have gotten breaks than been kicked off. Which Im ok with, as I dont know the circumstances and the back stories. However, I wouldnt say Smith does not tolerate marijuana use, because that statement is way to matter of fact when history clearly shows otherwise.

Didn't Klimara have a run in with cocaine, yet was reinstated after charges were dropped?

Yes, Klimara busted for cocaine and started the beginning of last season, Ryan busted for theft and started this season for Iowa. Yet Cael is soft on his wrestlers for "only" 30 "day suspensions for lessor offensives. Oh the hypocrisy.

Klimaras charges were dropped seems the cocaine was never his to begin with 01 I can think of 1 wrestler off the top of my head who had some nice results for them and Smith kicked him off mainly for marijuana use the story I always heard was that was one thing he did not tolerate

I really hate the food served at Taco Bell. Don't know how anyone can eat that slop unless they were under the influence of something nasty.

Cant debate whether the cocaine was his or not, cause who on here knows for sure. But I believe that the person who called the cops on Eddie, was arrested a little time there after for possession or attempt to distribute, I forget which. If your a DA, hard to convince a jury that your witness is credible if that is the case. Points to your thoughts of whos coke was it??

NY what are your thoughts on John with respect to prescription pills taken without a prescription? A no fly zone with these too?

I believe Eddie was intoxicated at the time this all went down its easy to take advantage of someone in that situation and as you said the person who called the cops was arrested a short time later for trying to distribute which would lead me to believe he might've planted that on Klimara as for you're other statement I would think so those type of things are very addictive and can lead you down the wrong road that's not something to play with so if he was taking them to get a high off of them I'd say there's a big issue there But that's not a story I've ever heard of with him or a wrestler of his so you've got me there

Marstellar would not be the first kid to burn out on a sport after 15 consecutive years of competition and expectations.

Hope it works out for him.

Didn't Henderson beat port?
That's why I said largely. He finally got over that hump, throwing Port (who I feel was the 2nd best at the weight) in Zain's path. Zain lost in OT to Port on a counter. Zain had a crap draw that year and it really obscured what a great year he really had.

Beat him in championship bracket. Every time Henderson stepped backwards seemed to be when Port was shooting or at least reaching for a leg and Henederson kinda side stepped and scooted behind. Port pounded him in the consis. Instead of letting him wrestle backwards, Port grabbed him and then shot.

The point being made, that Zain's total draw throughout stuck him in front of a tank (Loogie Bear) and then a big semi-truck (Port) is pretty accurate. Zain finished 5th, losing to those two. If he had not beaten Steiber in the dual then the seeding is different (more accurate) and Zain probably finishes either 2nd or 3rd.

Yes he had to beat either #1 or #2 to finish 3rd or above as the #3 seed.
