Terrible news reported by Willie S re: Jim Vollrath

To an Athlete Dying Young
BY A. E. HOUSMAN

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

Today, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad, to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does not stay,
And early though the laurel grows
It withers quicker than the rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honours out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,
The fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laurelled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.

Requiescat In Pace, James.

So very sad. RIP James. Makes me teary eyed reading all the beautiful comments on here(and on a few other forums). Prayers for all his family and loved ones.

Lord,
I pray to thee, I ask you to please forgive all James' sins and welcome James into your Kingdom.
I ask also for you to take a moment to embrace his mother, his father and whisper to their ear your son is with mine and he is good.

Amen

I cannot believe anyone dying this young and this innocently.

Completely tragic. I just hope and have faith James is in a better place.

I'm at a loss for words. So sad on so many levels. RIP James. In the short amount of time you were on this planet, you made a difference and will not be forgotten.

I'm at a loss for words.

Sums up how I've felt this weekend. It didn't help that I had to attend a memorial service on Saturday.

As I reported to the board at the time, I bumped into Jim's dad in November. I've been replaying our conversation over and over in my mind.

This is a painful post for me to write as I lost my wife at a young age to cancer, so I have an unfortunate idea of the heartbreaking grief the Vollrath family is going through. My wish for them is that they can focus on the wonderful young man he was. As Penn State wrestling fans we were privileged to see him wrestle and he wore the blue and white with honor and distinction. RIP James Vollrath, you are missed.

I didn't have a memorial service on Saturday, but the sense of loss was beyond what I could even talk about. I felt completely numb all weekend. I can only imagine how you felt Tom as I read your words. I hope you have the strength Tom as I try to find my own in such a time of unimaginable loss.

God grant that I may live to wrestle
Until my dying day
and when my final shot is made
I most humbly pray

that in the Lord's sweeping arms I'm peacefully asleep
and in his mercy I be blessed
with 2 points I can keep.

My prayers are with his family, friends, and the PSU wrestling family. Death, like life, is so completely unfair.
