That PSU commercial is awful

I like it, it shows that the University serves and is for everyone in the state, not just NIMBYs in the suburbs who want to keep "those people" away.
It didn't show any of that, you weak-wristed nimrod.

It should have shown the Amish buggy with the entire family pulling up to a branch campus,....it should have shown an inner-city student getting to State College by themselves to show that PSU is an all-inclusive University without racial or transportational barriers.

Why do I suspect that you had something to do with this turd of of a commercial?

Well guess what. Probably a lot of us responding negatively to this commercial are or were sons/daughters of of steel mill workers And coal miners. I had both in my family. I grew up in the Warren/Youngstown area and have seen the utter ruin and devastation of what black Monday did to the area. The last thing I would put in a commercial would be the rusting hulks of crumbling industrial buildings. For PA I would be highlighting the beautiful mountains, farming valleys with dairy farms, the nice parts of the big cities and yes, currently productive industrial works. Not the rusted out hulks of what used to be there.
Should have all of the above, I agree. They could’ve done a better job representing rural, suburban and urban PA. I stand by that what they showed wasn’t exactly bad. They showed a working mill, a city street with fairly well maintained duplexes center city Philly etc.

Unfortunately, the residents of the places shown in the commercial can no longer afford Penn State. At one time they could, but PSU has become a school for elitists.
They could still go to Penn College - PSU's renown trade school in Williamsport.

Wait. Scratch that. That can cost even more than UP. Nevermind.

Exactly. Some of those shots look exactly like where I grew up and i would never think it would be a selling point for anything positive. The ad missed its mark by a mile. Just look at the number of folks on this thread alone that are already invested in PSU that don't see it as positive.

It truly is a wonderful piece - to me, it reflects that dreams still do exist in our hardscrabble places in PA and that those dreams can come to reality at PS. This is as real as it gets in terms of context and those that miss the mark on this are hopelessly anachronistic and it wasn't meant for them, anyways.

The cost of education is insane just like the prices of real estate and autos in relation to real wages in the US. But, the haters of our current contemporary University will do just about anything they can to besmirch it and the cost is an easy target as is the catch-all term of 'administrative bloat.'

It's supposed to be a freakin sales pitch. Not a funeral service. Even our Alma Mater is sung like a death march. Everything in that "promo" screams a dying state and a dying University. Why the crap would I pay big bucks to send my kid to a place that promotes itself as being unsafe and dirty?????

It's like watching the trailer for some horror movie, and you are waiting for something bad to happen.

I agree. Cold and gray and about as meaningful as Biden's 'Build Back Better' campaign slogan.

The purpose of a state university is to provide quality and accessible higher education to the state.

What's missing from your post is the word "affordable." I know, I know. It opens up a whole 'nother can of worms, but is the message consisted with the cost to attend. I think not.

We Are.....the University of SlumVille, PA.

The commercial made very little connection, if any, between PA poverty and the admittance to ... and eventual/successful graduation from.... PSU. I could have done better with a 1980's Sony Betamax camera and anonymous actors.

My only questions, which won't ever get answered......are

1) Which media company produced this commercial?

2) What pre-production instructions/guidance, if any, were they given to the media company and by which PSU Administrator?

3) Who, or which Committee, reviewed and approved the commercial such that the media producer ultimately was paid for same?
Wait....THAT is the commercial everyone is bitching about? It was fine imo.

Maybe a PSU commercial should simply be the following, in white text on a blue background:

WE ARE! PENN STATE!

F*CK US.

We come to Penn State to escape those towns! I don't see the point of showing a general landscape of the entire state, with a focus on some of its worst parts.
In the same breath is this commercial also asking the people who contribute to the Philly garbage to come to Penn State? It could also be that PSU is positioning itself to grab all the federal tax dollars for free college when Joe and Kamala take office, Geeeeesh! Like my wonderful mom always use to say, "Becareful what you ask for."

It depicts PA as some real life district in The Hunger Games. Very depressing!

seems that way. Harrisburg Dave and a couple other notable racists on this board are up in arms over this silly commercial.
And here we go. An argument totally devoid of intellect. I guess any white male in this US is a racist according to some in this country. Just an absolutely stupid statement.

Lol, it would not surprise me in the least if the opinions here about the ad reflected our current political divisions along the exact same lines...
Well, to me, the ad looks schizophrenic. What is the message?
  • This is PA and it sucks?
  • PSU is your path to moving to a better run state?
  • Where you live you’ll never be able to afford our outrageous fees?
  • Get a good elementary Ed job that pays $18000 a year while being $200000 in Debt?
  • PSUwe are you and with you?

Marketing is supposed to send a clear message and create a feel. What is that message? Makes no sense at all. Regardless of the politics, the messaging is poor

Harrisburg Dave‘s “18%“ post actually was pretty racist.

In all honesty, Pennsylvania has become an impoverished, corrupt embarrassment. Other than the corruption, I think the commercial perfectly captures the current status of Penna.

Ehhh. Show me any another state and I bet I can find the warts.
It was a stupid commercial but PA does not have the market cornered on corruption or sketchy areas.

That is an excellent point.
How many people from the areas depicted can now afford Penn State?
Heck how many people from the dairy farms and farmers and coal miners in Western PA could afford PSU now? I know my family couldn't.

The interpretation of the commercial is like that of any art form. If it is a painting, a sculpture, or a musical piece, some people are going to love it , and some are going to hate it. To me it comes off more as a dirge. Quite a few of the post respondents really like it. Quite a few have a strong negative response. Neither is right, it is just how we feel about the ad. It looks like there are enough people against it causing me to conclude it is not a very strong promotional piece.

Don’t disagree but a TV ad isn’t ‘art’.if that is what the internet was they are just out of touch academicians. You out that in a gallery, you don’t spend money to put it on tv. Just another reason why psu is swirling around the drain.
