That PSU commercial is awful

Pitt would never get caught dead running a "promo" like that. Ours looks like a commercial to join the Pesce Corps and work in some third world country.

Pitt's campus is a LOT better looking , and surrounded by EXPONENTIALLY more culture, research, and arts opportunities than THAT "promo" depicted. It looked like some request for disaster relief.
Again, it is a commercial which theoretically should be trying to get prospective high school students (and just as important their parents) to apply and want to goto PSU.

How does that commercial do that? Unless PSU was just going pure woke, let's make a social statement type of commercial because we can, which I could easily see being what they did, how is this commercial appealing to prospective high school students and their parents. My point is, it really doesn't.

And an even more interesting question is how do they think the people living in those areas are going to afford PSU?

The ad is just another shot in the culture wars. We all know that. People are lying when they say they don’t see it.

These “intellectuals” know so much and understand little. Thanks to them-

Ugly is now attractive.
Perversion is now normal.
Faith is now foolish.
Achievement is gifted and not earned.

For recognizing that and calling it what it is the critics of this garbage are officially sanctioned and oppressed.
PSU is woke!

Perhaps everyone is just whiffing on this? The university has a three pronged mission of teaching, research and community outreach. Watch it again and I think you'll connect the dots.
If the prongs are (1) teaching, (2) research and (3) community outreach ....... there is absolutely no reference to prongs (1) or (2) in that commercial. The "dots" aren't remotely connectable. 🤷‍♂️

If that is their interpretation of prong (3) community outreach....God help us all alumni.

I like it, it shows that the University serves and is for everyone in the state, not just NIMBYs in the suburbs who want to keep "those people" away.
makes it look like this is where you live after graduation from PSU.

They thought this shot would just melt your heart.

It is an advertisement for a failed institution in a failing state. None of us wants that to be true, but it is.

I read through the thread before watching the commercial. I figured the commentary would be melodramatic, and it did not disappoint.

I grew up in the 1960s in an anthracite mining town.A few of the shots in the commercial remind me of my hometown. I think people’s nostalgia has made them think that things used to be better than they were.

Yep. It reminded me of those 2minute ASPCA ads asking for 60 cents a day to help abused dogs.

We got a bunch of ignorant old white guys on this board.
I mean who else would still be using a message board format in 2020?

The vast majority of the internet has migrated to social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram & Reddit to find a sense of community. As a sign of the times Sony shut down their Playstation forums earlier this year and encouraged people to migrate to the options I just mentioned. It's only a matter of time before these boards age out of use and get shuttered.
And this forum in particular does itself no favors with the hard slant against against most things that don't fit into the old white conservative viewpoint. Hence why there was that huge thread on Collingsworth's comments and how they were/were not sexist. I learned awhile back to not try and bring up topics or share thoughts that would get the echo chamber fired up.

The format is old but there is a community of posters built up over the last twenty or so years which is not easily replicated. Feel free to leave if you don't like it.

See, right here is a great example of how the board chases off new blood. I'm sharing an honest assessment of the board, my experience on the board, the reality of social media and how people connect on the internet these days, and I'm told to like it or gtfo.

I'm used to you old coots so I'm not going anywhere.

The only 'new' guys are those folks changing their user names. I think Lion S/H/F is the only actual 'new' contributor I've seen in years.

You are the one showing up here and insulting the entire board. I don't know why you think that would be well received.

This comment is both racist and agism. It always makes me laugh to hear someone accuse the other of racism by race. That makes you the very definition of racist.

Regardless, it is a forum. Be prepared to be challenged. If you are not prepared to be challenged, you shouldn't be posting. This is what forums do.

Continuing to prove me right on differing opinions and those that go against the echo chamber. Feel free to get back to your 4 day long bitch fest about a Penn State commercial that isn't targeted at you.

well, you just made a gross generalization using both race and age. Both, of course, are protected classes by the constitution. Fact is, you are a bigot and try to use bigotry to further your agenda. So be it. But don't blame anyone who calls you out on it.

HAAA!!! Ya. You're just waiting for Sandy to come on there crying with red, bloodshot eyes eating old beans out of a tin can, and Barron scrounging through some garbage cans in North Philly or the Hill District of Pittsburgh.

"Please, Please, PLEASE!!!!!!!! Give us homeless and needy Penn Staters some hope! PLEASE!!!!! WE BEG OF YOU!!!!!! Help us get the heck out of this fricken sh!thole!!!!!! ". : ^ )

I said I liked the ad! Go back and read the thread. The only thing you are proving is that you are narrow-minded and rude.

I think it should have been filmed in foreign countries because of the high percentage of international students on campus.

Revenue opportunity. Foreign students pay full boat and are, therefore, much more valuable to the university. This has the unintended consequence of turning the university's back on those very people that they are supposed to serve. My neighbor is a very successful dentist. His daughter graduated from the University of Miami with a 3.2 GPA and couldn't get into a single dentistry school in the state of Ohio, including his alma mater Case. He met the Dean in a loge at an Indians game and asked. The Dean made no bones: they make 40% more money, per student. Many of these student's fees are paid for by their governments. Which are, in effect, also subsidized by the USA.

The good news? This year you can get into any school you want with decent grades because many foreign students can't get into the country.

The interpretation of the commercial is like that of any art form. If it is a painting, a sculpture, or a musical piece, some people are going to love it , and some are going to hate it. To me it comes off more as a dirge. Quite a few of the post respondents really like it. Quite a few have a strong negative response. Neither is right, it is just how we feel about the ad. It looks like there are enough people against it causing me to conclude it is not a very strong promotional piece.

Yeah at the end of the day it doesn't matter how good its art characteristic is. What matters is does it sell PSU? We will never know those results. But looking at the responses here it's evident is that it's 50/50 whether it can sell PSU. The fact that these results are so mixed would probably not be good news to the marketing/media agency. Then again we are a pretty small sample in the grand scheme of things.

Agreed...couple of other thoughts:
  • Chances are, where you go to college will influence where you start your career. Do you want to start your career in Philly, Pitt, Altoona, New Castle, Allentown? Or do you want to start your career in Charlotte, Boone, Raleigh? I know a ton of people whose careers were negatively affected because, after getting married and having kids, were glued to a location that was not upwardly mobile.
  • Today, schools are more virtual. As such, physical location is downplayed. So I want to send my kid off to a school that will look good on his/her resume. So the commercial not only cater to kids but to employers. Does that commercial make me think I need to hire PSU graduates over Temple, Pitt or Clarion? Nope.
  • Who selects the college to attend, the kid or their parents? In my family, the kid selects from a pre-selected group vetted by the parents for several different reasons; major, location, cost, reputation. While a kid viewing that commercial thinks "cool, they cater to kids that like to ride spider bikes" the parents think "if I am spending $150k, I am sending johnny to a school that takes education seriously". While I wouldn't make a decision based on that commercial, I may not put them on my short/visit list

Nope. It sucks. My son's 17 year old friends agree.

I think that would be on the lower end of GPA for admittance. Maybe back in the early 80's that would have been fine. Cash incentive to accept foreign and out of state students is on point. I was googling avg GPAs and admission, and it seems like USC is one of the lowest, and she is right in that wheelhouse. SC is a pretty good school , but I'd guess the price is keeping a fair number of applicants out.
