The Earth is flat. - Kyrie Irving

At least he's well spoken..

I'm just looking for positives to avoid piling on the guy because that would be too easy.

He's got a NBA championship ring and makes more $$$$ per year than some small countries. Like he truely cares whether the earth is flat or round.!!!

Sadly he's not alone. I stumbled upon the flat earth society a couple months ago. It's frightening stuff.

Just to be clear, he made those moments TIC on a campy video/blog a teammate makes each week. He was asked about aliens and he went off on how you can't believe anything you read any more. It was a joke and really kind of makes his point (as this thread and most posts in it suggests).

If Kyrie was trying to make a point about "fake news", he failed. Why? Because he said it and double downed on it later. It may very well have been a joke and for his sake I hope it was. But if it was I don't think Kyrie understands the term "fake news", because reporting that he said the earth was flat was not fake.

All that was reported was what he said. There are lots of people that believe very odd things in this world, so I'm supposed to divine that Kyrie was joking? There are people that believe aliens built the pyramids in Egypt. So, is someone is going to run around saying they believe aliens built the pyramids in Egypt, they'd better get ready for people to believe them.

Soooooo. If I said I think PSU football are criminals and roll me eyes doing it, the press is right to quote me knowing I meant the 180 degree opposite? Isn't the definition of a lie to knowingly decieve?

I can't find any video that makes me think that he doesn't seriously believe the earth is flat.

You should post the interview where you think Kyrie is joking. I've looked at three different videos. Mostly, he's doubling down.

Yeah, I'm not sure that he's joking. Seems more surprised that it went so viral, so quickly.

Cavs' Kyrie Irving on 'Earth is flat' comments: 'I know the science'

After broadcasting to the universe that he thinks the Earth is flat, Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star guard Kyrie Irving on Saturday explained why he did so.

"The fact that that could be news all over the world just shows you how it is," Irving told reporters Saturday. "The fact that it's a social phenomenon -- 'Kyrie thinks the world is flat' -- is hilarious to me. ... That it could actually be news."

Irving made headlines after discussing conspiracy theories on the Road Trippin' with RJ & Channing podcast with teammates Richard Jefferson and Channing Frye.

"This is not even a conspiracy theory," Irving told Jefferson and Frye while recording the podcast on an airplane. "The Earth is flat. The Earth is flat. ... It's right in front of our faces. I'm telling you, it's right in front of our faces. They lie to us."

He reiterated those beliefs to ESPN's Arash Markazi on Friday.

"I think people should do their own research, man," Irving told ESPN. "Hopefully they'll either back my belief or they'll throw it in the water. But I think it's interesting for people to find out on their own.

"I've seen a lot of things that my educational system has said that was real that turned out to be completely fake. I don't mind going against the grain in terms of my thoughts."

On Saturday, after being peppered with questions, Irving explained his thinking further.

"I think that there's just so much, I guess -- I don't know if you can even call it news -- there are so many real things going on, actual, like, things that are going on that's changing the shape, the way of our lives. And I think it sometimes gets skewed because of who we are in the basketball world, and, 'Oh man, what does he actually think? Oh, no, I don't like hearing ... the world is flat, or he thinks the world can't be round.'

"You know, I know the science, I know everything possible -- not everything possible -- but the fact that that actually could be real news, that people are actually asking me that -- 'It's a social phenomenon. What do you think about it? Are you going to try to protect your image?' I mean, it really doesn't matter. It really doesn't matter. The fact that it's a conversation? I'm glad that it got people talking like this: 'Kyrie actually thinks the world is flat.'"

LeBron James, asked Saturday about his teammates' comments, said Irving was "an interesting guy."

"Kyrie is my little brother. He's my All-Star point guard, superstar point guard, and if he decides he wants to say the Earth is flat, so be it," James said. "He's an interesting guy, and he believes it."

Even commissioner Adam Silver weighed in on the conversation Saturday night.

"As he made clear today, he was trying to be provocative, and I think it was effective," Silver said. "A larger commentary on the so-called fake news debate in our society right now in terms of what's reported, and it led to an interesting conversation. But personally I believe the earth is round."

Sure seems like it. Is it a problem? I would say no, but kids do look up to him. Good gracious me, the science was settled in 300 BC, about the time of Euclid. Here's the leading sentence of the Wiki page on "Spherical Earth:" The earliest reliably documented mention of the spherical Earth concept dates from around the 6th century BC when it appeared in ancient Greek philosophy but remained a matter of speculation until the 3rd century BC, when Hellenistic astronomy established the spherical shape of the Earth as a physical given.

I really don't think it is a problem that he doesn't know the earth is mostly round. Let's be honest - other than because they were told by people they trust, how many people can cite good evidence for why the earth is not flat? How many people can really understand the physics behind the shape of the surface of the earth?

Not many, so they really don't "know" the earth isn't flat either. They just know that people they trust have told them the earth isn't flat.

What is a problem is that people have an inflated view of their own knowledge, and are willing to go to the mat with that knowledge (or lack thereof). That's the real problem.

Give Irving a break...the guy who discovered America thought the earth was flat. He was also a drug addict, booze hound, married his 13 yr old niece(or something like that), and thought he was in India when he crashed onto our shores. He got a national holiday named for him!

I would hope that the majority of people know that earth's shadow on the moon is curved, meaning earth is a sphere, but I have little faith in the idiots in this country any longer. Science doesn't matter, just build a wall!

Actually, that observation alone is insufficient to eliminate that the earth is flat. That observation is completely consistent with the earth being a flat disc.

I note that it is irrational to cite an democrat voter's lack of knowledge of science to disparage the lack of knowledge of science of a Republican voter.

I will further suppose that it is acceptable for liberal posters to make political comments, but if a conservative poster makes a political comment directed at a liberal poster, then that comment has to be removed. Especially if that post is tough for the liberal poster to refute.

No --- there have definitely been "liberal posts" on this thread that have been removed.

I'd bet $20 that this board's name-sake is/was a Trump voter. I wouldn't worry (if I were you) ......
