Barkley scores with about four minutes left in regulation to make it 20-12, Falcons. shurmur inexplicably goes for two, and the Giants don’t convert. Weak throw by eli. Now the Giants’ defense can’t make a stop when they need it.

The Giants just suck.

Not nearly as bad as Manning running two QB sneaks from the one with 40 seconds left and burning 30 seconds off the clock before finally throwing a TD pass with 5 seconds left on the clock. What the hell was that?

That was awful.

I'm still puzzled about the Falcons kicking that 56 yard FG. So many things can go wrong... but if he simply misses, the Gints have it near midfield with abt 2 mins on the clock, down 8.

Yes, he made it, yes he was confident in his players, blah blah... but shit happens and a miss there is a problem.

But hey, he makes the big bucks.

And the pro insiders on here were absolutely happy Barkley didn’t get drafted by Cleveland.

You say that like big things are happening in Cleveland. They’re so bad historically that 2-4-1 is a surprisingly good start... Check back in 2-3 years. The giants as a franchise have atleast shown they can build winning teams. The next contender the browns put on the field will be their first since they returned. I’d put money on the giants next playoff appearance coming before the browns.

In the long run, the math backs up the “go for 2 when down 8” move. But it’s completely unconventional so most will criticize it.

If you’re going to go for 2 after one of your scores (and you know it ahead of time, or want to shorten the game and avoid OT), the first one is clearly the time to do it.

Eli will still be the QB for 2-3 years, so I don't see how you think the Giants will be a ton better. They are going to have to overhaul both lines and their D Line gets no pressure vs the opposing QB. They will need to draft a QB and groom him for a year or two.

Its going to be a longer process then a few years.

Cleveland has a rookie QB, Rookie RB, Three OL players that are 3 years or less, one that is in his 4th year, a second year TE, and overall a young D. They are 2-4-1, but there 4 losses three have been by a combined 9 points, and two of those were O.T losses.

You are really going to tell me the Giants are closer to competing? LOL The giants have lost 19 of their last 23, of those 19 losses, 16 have been double digit losses. They are nowhere near close to be competing.

Eli isn’t going to be the starting qb for the next 2-3 seasons. I’d be surprised if he’s starting next season with how he’s looking. Expecting to see him retire.

Cleveland has had a never ending stream of young players for years and this year isn’t any different. Again, I’ll believe the browns are successful when it actually happens. I have more faith in the giants as a franchise than the browns. Especially when you factor in the divisions they play in. The redskins and cowboys are both messes. The ravens Steelers and bengals are all well run organizations for the most part.

so Eli is retiring at the end of this year?

Mara loves Eli. He has the starting job as long as he wants. No coach is benching him. Ask Mcadoo how that went.

More likely he’s retired next year then starting in 2021. Mara didn’t exactly come to his defense last week. Regardless tired of this argument. Lemme know when the browns are in the playoffs and ill tell you I was wrong. It will likely be several years or more.

Yea they are a mess. OBJ finally shows up and they waste him.
Their OL is worse than ours in 2014.
Shurmur is horrible and I'm not too sure about Mike Shula as the OC either.
But then with as bad as that OL is it might not be all their fault.
I have no idea what Shurmur was thinking on the 2pt conversion or what Eli was doing trying to sneak it 2 times.

The amazing thing is how good players in NE.....suddenly get terrible in other locations......Solder was pathetic last night.....and for 5 years he was one of the only OT that could go one on one with James Harrison and not get embarrassed....he leaves NE and he becomes Erik Flowers.......

Notice how New England made virtually no effort to re-sign him?

The Steelers really screwed up in the draft this year. They should have traded Bell and their first round pick to the Giants for their first round pick. Can you imagine how good Barkley would be running behind the Steelers' OL!! Also, can you imagine how many more games the Steelers would win with Barkley as their RB instead of lead-foot Connor?

JMO but I think Conner has done fine with the Steelers.
Don't be like the Liar and hate just because he went to pitt. (See anything written about Barkley on the Liar.)

Take your shot to put the game away.....the FG made it a two score game. Play to win, don’t play to not lose.

The most surprising point about the game is that it was still a game. Atlanta was SO much better yet they somehow let NY hang around and hang around and hang around.

The eagles did this a few weeks ago. This has long been a scenario that team math has been trying to get teams to change. The fact that it has happened again means that more teams maybe catching on.

Obviously the odds assume 2 TDs regardless, since you need that in all scenarios.

The Odds
1. Convert on the two-point attempt, successfully kick a PAT after the second touchdown and win: 46 percent

2. Convert on the two-point attempt, but miss the PAT and tie: 3 percent

3. Fail on the first two-point attempt, but succeed on the second and tie: 25 percent

4. Fail on both two-point attempts and lose: 26 percent

Assume overtime is 50/50 since you have played the team even for 4 quarters.

46% win in regulation
28 % tie -> an additional chance of 14% win.

46% +14% chance to win by going for 2. Rather, than just 50% chance in overtime. Roughly 10% increase in chance to win the game.

You will see various numbers for the percents thrown around based on what percent they use for extra points and 2 point conversions, but the math is clear regardless.

Sure it decreases the chance that the game goes to overtime, but this is not hockey you don't get a point for going to overtime. Losing in overtime is the same as losing in regulation.

-------
Side note if teams widely adopted this strategy .
It would lead to a small change in the odds of each final score, which is interesting for anyone that likes to get some money down on the games. Moves more games to 6,8, 1,2 and away from 3,7. ie Key numbers

as much of all that, and depending on the time, if you get the first 2 pt conversion, now you are down 6 (duh) but imo that gives you some other possibilities going forward. Suppose you get the ball back, but are facing say a 3-15 at +25 and throw incomplete, now what try for the TD? No kick the FG, and now you only need a FG for OT and that may mean only having to pick up 20-30 yds depending where you get the ball back. ETC

I don't dislike Conner because he was a pitter. I admire his life story. I just think that he was a decent college back because he was a bit bigger than most other backs and still had decent speed. He is certainly not an elite back like Gurley, Barkley, etc. I think Conner is doing decent with the Steelers because of their great offensive line. If the Steelers had Barkley he would be gaining 200 yards per game.

Bell wasn’t getting you the 2nd overall pick.

I like being aggressive (as it turned out, it almost wasn't enough... if the giants don't make like the keystone cops with 1st/goal inside the one and over 40 seonds left).

Guess we can "well, if" this one to death, lol. I'm never sure... if ball is kicked from the 46 and misses, do Giants get it at the 46 or the original LOS? Guessing Atlanta figures the very worst is they screw up and the giants score a TD late with 2 pt convert and it's OT at home.

Or maybe the giants block it and score quick TD (+ 2 pt) but that leaves Atlanta a bundle of time to drive for a game winning FG. My guess is you're right... you're up 8, go for it and get the win. And yet, the Giants are a recovered onsides kick (presumably with 35 seconds or so left)... and win with a last second TD.

The way Atlanta was handling the G men, hard to believe that was even possible. Reminded me of a game we played at Iowa last year.... lol

Posted this in the other Barkley / Giants thread. I think this a great example of how they're doing this year. Gotta click on the full size to get the best effect.
