The LeVeon Bell saga

Yes Bell finished his rookie contract, but during those contract years he tore his MCL twice, got suspended twice for violating the PED policy, and through the media got a big head thinking he was worth more than the other 52 players on his team.

He was offered a big time, long term contract twice - once last year and again this year. Both would have set him up for the rest of his natural life. He chose the route he is on, not The Steelers. The rest of the team supported him last year, and they did till he parked his ass on his sofa and refused to sign his tender and return to the team. He pulled in 14 million last year and would have pulled in 14.5 this year... unless he is the worst money manager in the world he was set and that was not including his rookie contract.

Sorry, Bell has worn out the goodwill he built up with the organization and the fans. He has thumbed his nose at the entire Steelers nation and that isn't getting you squat with the Rooneys.

Bell is just another example of the extreme immaturity and self-centeredness exhibited by many pro athletes. They have been coddled and praised continually since a young age. The school systems have given them passes so they are essentially illiterate and uneducated. Players like Saquon Barkley are rare.

When there's erratic behavior, you always have to wonder these days if it's brain damage. LJJr, Enis, so many running backs have started to act weird after taking that pounding on their skulls for so many years. We should be able to recognize this for what it is. In this case it almost seems like Bell just doesn't want to play any more.

Steelers are being cheap asses and I don't blame Bell one bit. Guy had back to back years with nearly 1300 yards rushing and another 600-700 yards receiving. He completed his rookie contract and has earned a big second contract. If the Steelers don't want to pay him, then trade him or release him.

The reports I read were that Bell was not satisfied by being paid as the highest paid running back. Instead he wanted to be paid like the highest paid running back plus a number 2 type receiver salary...I don't know what the Steelers were offering, but it seems Bell wanted a lot more than to be just the highest paid running back....

NFL only count the guaranteed money.
Gurley 45 million
Bell Offer 33 million

He is not wrong. Their plan is to work him into the ground and then let him walk. You can agree or disagree with him holding out and not signing, but this has clearly been their plan all along. They knew he would not take the deal, it is only 18.5 more guaranteed money than the franchise deal would pay him. The 70 million number is just for show.

Incidentally, this is the same reason that Cousins is in Minnesota. The guaranteed money in the contract offers never made sense to sign. His agent always looked at the guaranteed money, subtracted what the franchise tag already guaranteed and said no thanks. The additional money guaranteed by the deals was never worth it.

I would not be surprised to see him roll in on Saturday. He gets paid, but won't play. But if not, it could be weeks.

The Gurley money was non existent at the time of Bell's negotiation.

It'
That's poor planning on the Steeler's part. The guy finished his rookie contract in 2016. It's now 2018. They figured they could squeeze a couple of more prime years out of him with the franchise tag. He touched the ball 428 times last year. No way Bell should be expected to do that again without a long term contract.
It's what happens when you win a lot and have to pay a lot to keep great players. Look at what happened to the Seahawks after their 2 Superbowl runs. They had to pay Russel Wilson and all of the guys on that great defense big contracts. Now they are paying the piper and letting guys walk because of their lack of cap room.

The Steelers have chosen not to release other key guys to make room for what Bell's contract demands are, and I can't say I blame them with his drug suspension and injury history. He may have a couple of good years left in him, but let him do it somewhere else. Do you know who the starting running back for the Patriots is this year? Me neither.

Like any other player in the last year of a contract that won't sign. I did not see Cousins acting this way last year, or any other pending free agent in the last year of a deal.

And, if he only plays 6 games, he only earns 5 million and the difference is $28M in guaranteed money.
