look what I stumbled upon today. An article about Colin Cronin, his winning the SE Class AAA Regionals at 132, his Upper Darby team, and the results at the SE Regionals for Delaware County wrestlers. All that was interesting, but it was the lead-in to the write-up on Colin Cronin that caught my attention. You can read the article at this link.

FWIW, Cronin is a sophomore at Upper Darby. I've seen him wrestle 1 time, but don't remember much about it other than the fact that he won the match. El-Jefe, diceman, or tjb (or others), any insight you can offer on Cronin would be appreciated.

The part that I think you'll find interesting is copied below.

Lastly, this is not in any way a knock on Spencer. I really hope that he wrestles for PSU. His reputation is off-the-charts for a sophomore wrestler in high school. In part because he's such an amazing wrestler and has such a Superman reputation, I found the below info interesting and somewhat amusing.

Enjoy,

Tom

"Out in the far reaches of western Pennsylvania, there is a wrestler who carries a national reputation. His name is Spencer Lee and as a freshman at Franklin Regional High School in 2014, he compiled a record of 49-0 and won the PIAA Class AAA championship at 120 pounds. In Lee's exceptional career, which will likely lead him to a Division I scholarship and beyond, only one person has pinned him: Upper Darby's Colin Cronin.

"I honestly don't know how I beat him,' Cronin said with a laugh. He was in fourth grade when he earned the one-of-a-kind win. "It happened a long time ago.'

Cronin may not have the notoriety of Lee, but he's pretty good in his own right. At the PIAA Class AAA Southeast Regional Tournament Saturday at Oxford Area High School, Cronin claimed the 132-pound title with an 11-2 major decision over Josh Stillings of Pennridge. The Drexel Hill native is Upper Darby's first regional champ since 2001, when Andy Helms and Joel Edwards each won gold. Edwards added a state championship for good measure, Delco's only state title since 1974."

I should add a note ...

Upper Darby's team attends PSU's wrestling camp every summer. Pretty much each of them use gear bags (more like backpacks) that say PSU Wrestling, or PSU Wrestling Camp (can't remember which one) when they go to wrestling matches.

So unless Cronin has been attending some national event while his teammates are at PSU's camp, then the PSU coaches should know about him.

Although I was in the building for the match (I think it was Erie that year?), I didn't watch that match, but I'm sure I know how Cronin pinned him. Chin-whip. Colin Cronin had a ferocious chin whip and he won a couple of PJW titles in his youth with that as his go-to.

Saw Cronin last week for the first time this year at regionals and he was very impressive taking freshman phenom Josh Stillings to the woodshed in the championship match. Looked like a case of a young freshman getting down and then Cronin smelled blood in the water. I expect it will be much closer when they meet in the future, but Cronin is ahead of him right now.

As a regional champ, Cronin got a hellacious draw as he will see Pletcher in his quarter, which will then drop him into the Gould/Port loser for a medal. I think he's got a shot with Gould, but not really what you want when you're a regional champ. Stillings actually got a much better draw although I'm not sure if he is ready to take advantage of it.

Lost to Pletcher at Flonationals in 8th grade. Also lost to Suriano at S32 a couple months prior

Upper Darby also produced Andy Matter....

a pretty fair wrestler for PSU; first saw Matter when he was in junior high
