As is lay here in the hotel in traction I now understand why the call Rutgers Athletic Center the rack. I have more appreciation for the medieval torture chamber.

On a positive note the Rutgers fans were friendly and definitely anti Iowa, warmed my heart.

I may need a Chiropractor, wonder if Matt McCutcheon has his license yet.

A chiropractic concession stand would have been a big hit also. Several other features of the RAC could be better ... like not having only one bathroom on the side of the gym, not having staff sitting in the corner of Mat 2 blocking the view of the one quadrant (where a lot of the action took place and where just about every Penn State wrestler was assigned last night) .. if you were in the lower rows of 108 and 109 it was anyone’s guess what was happening. But... I don’t want to complain ... lol

We were down low (row D) in 102. The tables ON the platform blocked half of mat 2 which is expected when buying lower rows. As wrestling fans, we expect some obstructed views on occasion. What we found aggravating was the excessive amounts of team “extras” standing stationary behind the tables. At times last night we couldn’t see much if any action on mats 2,3, and 4. We are hoping that the 3 mat alignment on Sunday will improve the viewing. On the other hand, it would have been good for Rutgers, the Big Ten, or me to have done more sightline recon. Rows A & B were closed, but, it was obvious that they sold Rows C, D, and E only to boost revenue & attendance numbers without much consideration for the viewing experience.

FWIW Lots of scuttlebutt in the RAC the last two days that Seabass is grad transferring to Rutgers for his last season after graduating NW this spring.

The team leaderboard in the RAC only had room for the first 10 teams. Rutgers never made the first page of the leaderboard.

To be fair, they made a brief appearance during the first session.

Hard to believe a program that was fifth in B1Gs in 2016 and had all ten wrestlers finish in the top 8 that year thinks their program is improving when they had two wrestlers finish in the top 8 this year, finished 12th and were elminated before the second round was even close to finished. I guess anything better than 14th is considered fantastic.

Thoroughly enjoyed the event, and would do it again in a heartbeat to see our Lion’s. Seat backs would have made it better.

EDIT: One thing to add. The only "communication" fans had was the mini-jumbo above the mats. When it was scrolling through the mat bouts, it did not have weight class or bout number. When they decided to show action from one of the mats, we lost even that. I can keep up normally, with the bout numbers on the mat kiosk, but thought the communication interface was not very good.

Is that Creedo's definite midwest upperweight transfer who's not a HWT?

Given that I am fortunate enough to travel to many of the away venues... I would place the RAC in the same category as several other venerable institutions that house wrestling... such as Minnesota’s “Barn” & our own “Rec Hall”.

These venues are fine, and in some cases “preferred” for duals which is appropriate given the “environment” generated and the time limit (approx 2hrs) of the event.

Difference is the appropriateness of these venues for a conference tournament... next year we’ll be in BJC, not Rec Hall.... last year it would have been nice to not be in the Barn (I had good seats with backs), but the folks in the rafters (mostly Iowa folks) hated it because it was bench seating and hot as Hades up there. I believe there were also some sight obstruction issues, but mostly due to posts, not entire platform blocking out half of one of the mats.

The RAC was less than ideal for a setting of such great wrestling, not so much for sight line issue as I think had been discussed here for if there had not been 4 mats, things would have been fine, as they were with 3... the real issues as I felt them:

1) bench seating... not bench seating alone... heck all the on-campus venues have them to some degree... even the brand new beautiful arena in Nebraska has benches in the second level (and our beloved Rec Hall)... but unfortunately, the RAC had benches with hard plastic “form-fitting” butt holders....now, I’m not sure whose butt was used for the original mold, but the 12yo boy beside me seemed to fit just fine... me on the other hand (I’m more “full figured” or “big boned”)... there was no way the holder could fit me... plus, as we all know, when you are in a bench row with a mix of 12yos and husky sized... some times you slide out, robbing Peter to pay Paul, all along the bench... that does not work with theses seats and my tailbone still hurts to prove it:confused:

2) the facility was a “U-shape”, not a ring, so all foot traffic settled/met at the bottom of the “U”... ordinarily for a simple dual or bb/vb game, no issue... you are in & out in 2 hours... but for 7k people all day, over two days, with hours to kill between sessions... this made things challenging at time...getting around, especially to the bathrooms... all 2 of them...:(

3) the two bathrooms were more than sufficient for a dual/bb game, but a full 2 day event with session breaks for 7k folks put a strain on the facilities, and by the break between sessions III & IV, the RACs plumbing could no longer keep up, literally “topping off” all 10 stall toilets in one of the men’s rooms.

now that was the “red meat” some of you wanted to hear... but I encourage you to read on for the positives:

1) concessions I thought were terrific (expensive, but it’s NJ)...with tons of selections and very few wicked long lines to deal with:p

2) lots of parking (but expensive) and very organized getting us out... I thought I be trapped 45+ min, but we literally pulled out the lot in less than 5 minutes... and it’s right next to the arena... kudos on their traffic flow. (I think the expense might have been related to all the police directing traffic, but they made a huge difference!):)

3) lastly, and frankly, most importantly... the wrestling which was the real reason we were all there... terrific quality as only the B1G can provide, and while a little disappointing from a PSU perspective, we can look forward to getting past this difficult year of injuries... and continue on our “Dynasty of World Domination” :D

My RAC thoughts....

Bench seats (108) were horrible.

Loved the "top 10 at NCAA" banner with only 1 year on it.

Concessions were pretty solid some decent variety and lines moved pretty quick.

Rutgers fans were friendly and I loved how they really supported Jersey kids from other schools.

$30/per session for parking seemed crazy. We parked session 1, ubered from hotel/bar for session 2 and then parked in neighborhood across st for sessions 3/4.

The views and wrestling were fantastic and there was a really good energy in the arena for most of the event.

The Alveraz celebration after winning 7th place match seemed out of place, however, because 133 only sent 7, that was his blood round and he did it at home. I say give the kid a break, special moment for him.

Minnesota fans (very close to my section) were fun and very supportive for their kids.

Finally, one thing we noticed early in second round...the iowa fans (across arena from us) seemed to cheer louder for stall calls than for takedowns. We paid attention to this thru finals and it seemed to keep up. We were impressed with Nebraska's showing and would have felt bad for the Maryland kids, but the horrible yellow shirts for day 1 made it impossible. Great couple of days even though the PSU results were a little below expectations.

The Marquis de Sade had nothing on the bleacher seats in section 108. The Rack would be an appropriate name for the venues seating!!

How exactly would you have handled it? Just curious.
maybe not giving season ticket holders huge numbers of tix, many of which ended up on secondary markets, and setting aside tix for other conference teams beyond those which covered teams' families, adm, etc. of course, the obvious one was to have it in a decent sized facility. poor planning by bt & rutgers.

My take about more seats: I was in 314 row C and there were “many” empty seats in front and to my left for the entire tourney. No idea what fueled that.

Matter scared everyone away:D.Talking with many Penn St fans at Big 10 most liked the venue.I think most now know that Matters hatred for Rutgers is real and whatever he says about them is extremely exaggerated.

What would it take to have a venue not liked in that case? Do I exaggerate when I say they came in 12th out of the 14 teams and were eliminated from the title race before 9pm on Saturday?

Hew is and Suriano is going 141 next year for them , Half the arena new that laST NIGHT !

Heard a few RU fans talk that up this weekend as well, with Suriano supposedly being done (to go into acting?) and Alvarez going 141. Who knows if it's true but rumors are fun.

The RAC is great. Seatbacks at the lower levels definitely make it better, but the nosebleed atmosphere feels unique. F** weekend

I'll buy the size of the facility thing, which imo is the root of all the ticket availability problems. It's real, for sure. Season ticket holders, I heard, got 4, but never the additional 8 that was posted in an article before ticket sales. The venue had over 600 seats still for sale three weeks after the initial sale, and took over 2 months to sell out. As far as tickets on the secondary markets, that's a thing everywhere, and will happen at Penn State next year. Not defending Rutgers Athletics ... as more fans could have attended if the event was moved off-campus.

Roar I feel like the BIG and Rutgers should get 50/50 blame for the venue issues. I was sitting in section 313 row E and 1/3 of mat 3 during the opening round and semi-finals was obscured due to the mat placements because of the arena layout. We noticed they had one of the Rutgers wrestler's matches on their scoreboard quad screen during the opening round. As you know they were using the quad screen to show the mat assignments, with scores and who was on deck. Why didn't they bring in 2 jumbotrons at each end to project the mat assignments and show mat 3 on the scoreboard quad screen when they knew it was obscured for the fans? PSU had quite a few opening round matches on that mat and I know RBY's takedown on Desanto in the semis wasn't visible. I ran into Mark Hall's father and he told me that he was sitting on the same side and had the same issue with mat 3. I'm sorry but that definitely should not happen for any wrestler's family at a Big 10 tournament.
The other issue among many was when we arrived at the arena on Sunday morning for Session 3 the brackets were being completed for the wrestling that had ended approximately 12 hours earlier. It just didn't seem like Rutgers went out of their way for the 13 school's fans. I would hope the BIG makes better decisions in the future for their conference in regard to the host of BIG wrestling tournament venue.

Seats in the upper deck were really uncomfortable but the view was just fine except that part of Mat 3 was cut off from our view. I was shocked at how easily we got out of the parking lot after the finals. Very good job of traffic control.

It's sad to think Penn State could learn something from Rutgers.
