Being one of three Yankee afterthoughts in a southern conference.

"Afterthought" is an understatement. If you recall the chronology, in 2004 the nine-member ACC initially invited BC, Syracuse, and Miami. They dropped BC and Syracuse and added VaTech to wind up with eleven. As the NCAA would not waive its then requirement that a conference have twelve members to hold a football championship game, it added BC in 2005.

Syracuse and Pitt were added in 2011.

Somehow Pitt fans always tend to talk about Penn State, so I wouldnt be surprised if sPitters are finding a reason to bring us into the conversation

Funny. You came into a Penn State thread that is talking about Pitt to say Pitt talks about Penn State.

By the way, Pitt, despite being in one of the best areas for HS wrestling, recently finished #6 out of 6 teams in the ACC Wrestling Tournament.

Pitt needs a complete overhaul of its athletic department. The article should be titled “Who killed Pitt Sports?”

Pitt athletics and the steel industry are suffering the same slow death
True. The solution to the problems in the steel industry seems to be putting a tariff on those who can make steel more efficiently. The tariff would then make the inefficient steelmakers more competitive.

Maybe the solution to pitt's athletic problems is to get Pa. to institute a fee on Pa recruits who don't sign with pitt. So when Miles Sanders signed with Penn State, we would have had to send pitt $500,000. That is about the only way pitt could get Division 1 caliber recruits.

Pitt does have some decent Freshmen wrestlers who show great promise -

Nino Bonaccorsi 184
Dallas Bulsak 141
Jake Cherry 125
KJ Fenstermacher 133
Will Kaldes 165

They could be a force in a few years.

Pitt wrestling seems to be a cut above their basketball and football. However, they are light years below Cael's Penn State juggernaut. The last time Penn State has a dual meet with Pitt we won by something like 35 - 3. That won't change. Pitt is getting decent recruits in wrestling but not the national elite like Cael gets.

Who died and made this a Pitt board?
Take a look at the 20 posts at the top of this board right now. Only 4 are tangentially related to Penn State football. There are posts on hockey, snowfall, golf, the Steelers, Amelia Earhart, etc. During the off season this is an anything board, not a Penn State football board. Laughing at the pitters is therefore fair game.

BINGO!!

Why would anyone north of Maryland join the ACC?

I know money drives everything, so I am not naive to that fact, but all of these teams that are jammed into conferences that make no geographical sense. I guess somewhere along the line, someone crunches the numbers and figured that sucking at athletics was worth the payoff.

Pitt, Syracuse, and BC are in “no mans” land being in the ACC. There is not much hope for them. They missed their opportunity with the All East proposal back in the 80’s and went with Gavitt and the BE basketball league. Unfortunately, they are now religated to second class citizens and on par with the Wake Forests, Ga Techs, of the world. They can’t recruit in football and their bball prowess is slipping badly.

Yeah, but talking about snow doesn't attract more snow, but posting about Pitt will attract Pitt fans/trolls to come to this board and sling mud. Ignore them and they will wither and die.

Yep. The dissolution of the Big East as we knew it, kills basketball recruiting. Pitt used to do well in the NYC area. Not so these days. They seem to be on an island.

As a long-time ACC fan, and watching this develop, I believe you are right, Ian.

I know the local ACC fans don't look at those schools as rivals, except maybe for playing Syracuse basketball in their Carrier Dome. I don't really see a good remedy for these 3 stepchildren. The ACC finances are not bad, so I guess they'll tolerate the current situation.

In hindsight, think about how sPitter football and hoops could have prospered if they didn't kill JoePa's eastern conference back in the 80's? It was a completely self inflicted wound. An eastern conference with PSU, sPitt, WVU, Cuse, BC, Butgers, Maryland, UVA, VTI and the likes could have taken collegiate athletics by storm!! The sky would have been the limit for both football and hoops. Now we are stuck in the midwestern rotel Case IH farmers league, sPitt is an after thought in the ACC and WVU has to travel all over gods green earth to play a BIG 12 schedule. What could have been.

Shame is..had he finished 2-16 in the ACC this year Pitt would have given him a contract extension!

The problem for pitt is that they will probably have to take someone worse. They can't afford a big time coach. None would want to come to pitt anyway. They will face the same problem with Narduzzi after a couple more years of losing seasons. He will have to go and nobody decent will want the job.

The crime in this is that the $10million Stallings' payoff will have to be paid (indirectly) by the Pa. Taxpayers.

The grass roots movement of muttonheads, seemingly led by local beat writers, who started calling for Jamie Dixon's head because he couldn't win "the big game" and never got to the Final Four or won the NC, started the process. Then smaller and smaller mis-steps were magnified in the press and Dixon grew disgruntled and unappreciated, culminating with him leaving for his alma mater, where he was welcomed with open arms.
Being a season ticket holder (20yr waiting list for Stillers tix, Pens tix crazy expensive and can only tolerate one Pirates game a year-no other good choice for live sports in the Burgh), I saw virtually every home game in an amazingly successful 10+ year long run. Many also involved quality time with my kids that are memories I'll treasure forever.
I wonder what percentage of the "couldn't wait for Dixon to leave" camp now wishes Pitt could win a game, let alone "the big game?"

Stallings is evidently a graduate of the Charlie Weis School of getting rich without working; that is, to get an inflated contract based on an undeserved reputation, suck as a coach, get fired, and collect.
