This may be the last year for the spring football game

they have already evolves in to less than a half of practice. The game is running clock of 12 minutes, so basically about 40 plays and no hitting. I'd hope that it can at least stay on as a nice spring weekend trip for those of us who want to bring the kids up to this instead of the games. Put the autograph session out there and have some skill competitions. Hell, make it like a carnival where the players go in the dunk tank or if you beat them in a basketball shooting contest you win a prize.

My guess is that it will evolve into something like what the NFL Pro Bowl has become, with assorted games and other activities, and I definitely believe that there will be some sort of Fan Fest in which the fans can engage with the players in some way. It actually may become a better experience.

That would actually be a much better experience. Having fan, especially younger fan engagement, with the players is a wonderful idea. And I would love to see flag football happen at the spring game!

Yeah having the fan engagement amped up while the "real football" part is dialed back seems like a good move. Would be nice to see them go through some drills, etc. Make it a fun, engaging experience for the younger fans.

If they change it to something like this it should not count as a practice. Teams are limited….IIRC 20 practices in the spring.

Coaches would hate to lose a day, especially since a lot of kids transfer out after spring ball. If a player has a injury misses two weeks…that last day is pretty important.

I feel like CJF doesn't like the exposure for games early in the season. First, he runs the most simplist of plays. Second, he wants to hide guys for two reasons. He doesn't want their skill set on film and he doesn't want coaches poaching players who have had great leaps in development.

Teams are not hiding ANYONE important. The teams have been scouting players since they were in 8th grade. They players who played last year are all on film. Incoming ranked players are all on film.

I just saw that Texas is not going to have a Spring Game.
Ohio State and USC have also canceled their spring games. Last year Ohio state had 80,000 people watching the game.

One of my best memories from the spring game was one where Joe Burrow was playing very well, hitting receivers in stride which Barrett could not do, and the announcer, who was a former Penn State linebacker, stated that JT Barrett ought to be a little concerned about his starting job. The game ended with Burrow throwing a 50-yard touchdown pass and after the game Burrow and Nick Bosa were whooping it up.

Have a drawing and the losers have to go through an Oklahoma Drill with select defensive players

Urine balloon filling competition to get the fans ready for the Buckeyes

Agree but it is different now with the portal. I'll guarantee you that a lot of agents will be in attendance looking for that true Frosh that "flashes" then gets in touch to tell them TX A&M will be happy to pay them $4m to Xfer. That wasn't an issue two years ago.

We all know scrimmages and practice doesn't always translate to the field. It's unlikely anyone is getting 4M for a spring game

Franklin already said he won't cancel the game but they're looking into different ways of making it a showcase. The BW game/weekend is far too important for the town of State College to just get rid of it. A lot of these teams cancelling already are in major cities versus college towns.

The quotes from the coaches are precisely "we don't want to televise our guys only for someone else to buy them during the spring window".

These games were littered with walk ons and those players won't be around now to use as tackling dummies where you need. Additionally, the playoff adding games to the season is being used as an excuse.

At the end of the day, people are being paid to think and analyze this much harder and with the scrutiny and problems at hand whereas we likely only know the surface level of a lot of them. Evolution of the sport continues.

Obviously, these coaches believe that there is a risk of players being poached by getting exposure in these Sping Games, or they would proceed with them because die hard fans really look forward to getting even a sliver of football after the long winter months, and for college towns these games are good for the economy. If a school like Texas is worried about this, then you know that it's over.

Just based on what the NFL has done with the Pro Bowl Weekend, I think that we would have gotten to this point organically anyway. Like I previously posted, I think that it will be a better experience for the fans if these schools institute true Fan Fests where fans can interact with the players and even coaches.

In the end, if the transfer rules were more strict, like having to sit out a year or having to pay back NIL money, this probably would be a moot issue. But college football has gone Back to the Future to what it was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when players sometimes played on multiple teams in the same season, so measures like canceling the Spring Game have to be done to protect a program.

The undefined variable in this equation may be the young players that know that they have had a breakout spring and would actually like to showcase their talents in these games.

They along with their agents may be looking for some other way to showcase their talents to coincide with when the portal opens.

Some of these players may only be interested in showcasing their talents so that they can compensated. And unfortunately, their loyalty lies with the team who is the highest bidder.

I hope that this scenario does not happen but nothing would surprise me.....
