I put forth the idea that we watch a great PSU match over the next 36 days.
Rules: All have to feature PSU guys winning, they should get better as we close in on Saturday

I'm.gonna start with a super fun one but it's not for a title, it's just a great upset .

I'd post all of the many videos I posted on this site in years past, but that got my youtube account banned. Thanks NCAA! Only the evil empire would use my video in a tweet to promote Dean Heil getting the 1 seed and then wipe said video off the face of the planet two weeks later. I did manage to locate a few of them on my google drive yesterday, however, and immediately rewatched the bo vs gabe dean and bo vs mymar finals.

Here's my favorite "Sign of things to come" moment.
Check the girl in the first seat left of the official's table from 14:22 to 14:29. She clearly wanted to jump out of her seat, but must have been in some official capacity, so she gives the subtle, hands-in-lap golf clap. I think she was even gripping the seat of her chair so she wouldn't jump out of it.

Not all wins are fun to watch, in fact some are downright nausea-inducing. But the greats always figure out how to get the job done. Here's Zain w/ his 2nd appearance... BTW, this is gonna be tough since so many matches are either not available or behind a paywall.

Zain made sure to show that kind of match was never happening again in the semis later that year.

With how many All-Time Greats that we've produced over the last decade + it's easy to forget just how good guys like Morgan and Matt Brown were. There are so many others that had their big moments but don't always get their due on the boards.

Cassar fit this description for years and had his signature moment vs Kollin Moore as a backup, but then, we all know he bulked up and dominated his way into the elite category the next year.

I guess that was righteous, knowledgeable wrestling fan permissable booing at the end of that match.

I wonder if AJ Friccione sees himself as the next Cassar. The kid is tough and could see him bulking up and being a smaller quick hwt like Cassar.

Probably the one match I wanted to see again was Nick Lee vs Yianni after his true freshman year. I feel most people think Yianni would have owned him but after his sophomore year Nick jumped levels like nobody else. I feel like if Cornell had gone in 2020-21 Nick would have beat him. Anyway, this McKenna match was the one that let the world know he was going to be something special. BTW, I feel somewhat vindicated knowing that Nick handled him fairly easily in FS a couple years ago.

Oh my. If Cornell had competed and Nick had won, talk about Cornell lawyers and legal challenges out the wazoo!
I can hear the argument now. Our guy didn't really try and should be declared the champion.

Almost forgot that one. Down 1-5 then he just broke him with his pace and conditioning. Hats off to Joey for defending what could/should have been 3 takedowns earlier, or the match wouldn't have been close.

Nick somewhat drove me crazy his freshman year coming so close in several matches (including that year's McKenna match), but lost due to just plain sloppiness late in matches. Well once he tightened things up, look out.

The thing I wasn't expecting was his beating both Zain and Yanni. He just doesn't make mistakes any more. It was a real pleasure to watch his development into one of our best. No foolish Instagram posts from Nick Lee, just go out and do your business on the mat.

'Chop wood and carry water', was his version of Bo's ' it's what we do'.

This is another favorite like the Zain match. No 1 PSU vs No 2 OSU started at 133 and everyone knew OSU needed to score big (probably bonus) in the lightweights with Pletcher, McKenna, and Jordan to have a chance knowing #1's Nolf, Joseph, Hall, Nickal, and Cassar were coming up later, and RBY and Lee upset Pletcher and McKenna and Verk (who was Berge's backup that year) held Jordan to a 10-8 decision. The dual meet showdown of the year was over after three matches with PSU leading 6-3 when OSU needed to be up at least 11-0 to have a chance, and instead, the rout was on.

As with Zain, the two upsets by Lee and RBY aren't much like upsets in retrospect, but they definitely were huge upsets at the time.

Yup - and then Nickal capped it with his insouciant pin of Kollin Moore. I’m sure Moore’s mom had the same sour look she had a month later when she watched Bo pin Brucki and knew right then her boy was doomed in the final.

I was actually in Tucson during that dual for a quick trip - listened to Byers while hanging out at the resort bar in RBYs hometown. In the same hotel, a U of A sorority was having a winter formal. Mother of God!!!!

Auto like for insouciant. Good one!

Busy day today so I'm super late adding this one, one of the most improbable ways to extend a winning streak of all time. The craziest thing about this is that it's not even the biggest win of his career.
Yeah, this was just a little preview of his giant killer ability. What a fun dual this one was. Just as big as Cassar’s win was the next match where Nevills lost but held Snyder, the reigning Olympic gold medalist and eventual national champion, to a 15-10 decision instead of bonus points to preserve the one point win. I remember screaming at my TV for that whole match, too.

I've mentioned it before but if you watch both teams shake hands at the end you can see Cael tapping Nevills on the back and saying "You can beat him" after it was over. The dude never concedes anything.

It's amazing how things work out. Had Cassar won the spot and gone to nationals he was a lock for an AA and a threat for the championship. The following year he most likely would not have gone up to heavy to become the only collegian to beat Gable (twice!).

He would have challenged Bo for 197 instead? I'm not sure that would have worked out all that well for him. LOL.
