Tom Brands:

"We had a great crowd," added Brands. "We had Penn State coming to town and you never know when you get beat down at Oklahoma State -- maybe you worry you won't have fans at home. But the fans showed up. We have the best fans, the best head table, and we'll see if we can get the best wrestling. It's on me."

Ummm... Iowa lost last week 25-11 to Oklahoma State and Penn State won last night 26-11 a wrestler down. Can one deduce from Tom's comment's after Penn State's beat down that this was Iowa's 2nd beat down in 2 weeks... according to Tom's parameters? Just wondering.

Considering this was at home... and all.

Considering CHA fans were filing out after the Bo Nickal spladle heard round Carver... maybe not, because Bo put his hand up to his ear and he heard... nothing.

Think it is clear Brands knows this was a beat down and iowa is not where he wants the program to be.

Uh. He didn't call it a "beat down" but they were beat (down) at Oklahoma state. As in "lost up" at Minnesota.

I guess im in the minority but i would hardly call them "beatdowns". Lots of swing matches that could have gone another way. Not sure what it is you would like Brands to say to cater to your thinking.
+1

I'm sorry... Tom meant beat down... as in he expected to win, not lose by 14.

I'm with Turk on this one. Brands' quote is spot on. As for the "beatdown" part, well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There ARE no "beatdowns" at the elite level of the sport. You see a dominating type of match only in situations such as a top 5 kid going up against a backup or a third stringer. Other than that, matches swing on strategy, a big move, momentum, a great night, an off night, somebody gasses, somebody makes a mistake, or somebody just outlasts somebody, or somebody gets ahead and then stalls. Things like that.

I continue to like Tom Brands.
Altho apparently I cant tell him from Terry.
During the intermission when Gibbons interviewed Tom (I think it was Tom), Gibbons got a much longer response to his question than he expected, and kept wanting to conclude it, but Tom kept on talking.
He's ok in my book.

Brands is WAY over rated as a Coach and i know some of the Iowa fans know it and want a change....JMO

I don't like Brands jumping all over the place during a match but I do like his interviews and his candidness and think he offers alot to the sport. I like him much better than Smith (who I don't like) and Ryan and Manning - who I detest.

I generally don't have an issue with the Brands although I prefer Cael's calm demeanor. Is it me or is Terry the more animated one of the 2 during matches? TnT are intense competitors who (like much of the wrestling world) have been able to crack the Cael lead PSU code. They will continue to fight and improve until they are successful or replaced.

Terry seems more animated during matches but it's close. Much prefer Cael's style, not sure which one I'd be but know which one I would want to be.

You do realize he is a wrestling icon , right up there with Cael and john smith. I think we would all agree that Cael is tops and in my opinion he is right behind. You don't get to be NCAA , Olympic and world champ without knowing something about wrestling

Not sure Brands was referring to a "beatdown at Oklahoma State". Am guessing he meant Iowa got beat down (as in down South in Stillwater) at Oklahoma State.

But, in any case, his Hawks didn't fare too well in either match. Allowing that both teams
were down one starter, PSU at 133 and Iowa at heavyweight, they still lost by one more
point at home to PSU than to OSU on the road, and the fact that the losing margin was in the teens in both cases suggests there's still a way to go before Iowa can claim "the best wrestling" he referred to.

How many national titles does he have to win, in order to not be overrated?
Well if you remember they won 3 or 4 with that slick move they pulled sending about 4 or 5 studs to VT then they had them all transfer to Iowa....They all red shirted at VT....Wow he don't remember that ? Matcalf and 3 or 4 other big time studs....VT was pissed and still is to this day....

Answer to a question not asked.

Tom Brands has conviction, commitment, focus, drive, and many other traits that great leaders have. I, for one, have a lot of respect for the guy.

But then everyone in a leadership position, or blazing trails takes a beating...just comes with the territory.

Ryan reminds me of the desperate salesman Jack Lemmon played in Glengarry Glen Ross

He tries way too hard on Twitter and elsewhere

Tom is passionate, but has a great sense of accountability. I don't know what's coming over me, but I empathize with him more and more.
I gotta stop drinking 40's though, too.
