I am in your corner ...
I saw him hit a ball halfway across the water in the par 3 contest on Wednesday and couldn't believe a pro golfer would hit such a poor shot. It literally looked like a shot that a 20 handicapper would hit. I said to myself that he wouldn't break 85 if he played like that during the tournament. Sure enough, he went out and shot 91/85 which was 13 strokes worse than the next (worst) competitor.
Did you notice the tv shots of him never showed his score? They were being kind as I had to go on line to see what score he was shooting and when I looked he was 29 over through 28 holes.
I understand the nostalgia and history and tradition and all that, but at some point, he should have had the pride to decline to play as I am sure he knew he would play in the manner that he did. In a way, it was an insult to the tournament to have him go out and play like he did. He could have played in the practice rounds on Monday/Tuesday and the par 3 on Wed and called it quits then.
On the other hand, he did score an ace in the wife and daughters category.
