Towards the end of the game Franklin was more animated than we've seen in quite some time.

We might never get to OSU's level but I'd like to see us beat OSU every 3 years. A year where we have a lot of returning starters and OSU has key players leaving for the NFL.

For all the Paterno haters: The all time series record is 22-14 in favor of OSU. But PSU has lost 9 of the last 10 since 2011.
You need to take a deeper dive into those numbers. Joe caught OSU at their lowest from the start of PSU’s Big10 inclusion. How’d Joe fare against Michigan in the same span? I recall almost a full decade of L’s. Joe was really good until 1994-1995, average from 1999 until catching lightning in a bottle in the mid 2000’s. I still think we’d be among the truly elite programs had his ego allowed him to retire in 2005.

Veilleux was impressive today but don't get carried away. Next year is going to be a rebuilding year. We have to replace too many impact players.

Clifford
Dotson
Mustipher
Luketta
Stout
Brooks
Brisker
Ebiketie

I agree that the performance of younger players today gives us hope but I don't expect more than 8-4 next year. Maybe we can make a run in 2023.
When Franklin is 8 games deep at 3-5 you will move the goal posts to 6-6 just like the rest of his apologists.

But that doesn’t mean the team quit on him. No bigger Paterno fan than me, but you act like there were never any games where Penn State never played flat under Paterno. A 14-0 loss to Cincinnati on opening day immediately comes to mind. There also was an embarrassing home loss to Minnesota in 1999 which cost them a chance to play for the National Championship
Toledo.

Both the 1983 and 1999 Paterno teams finished with better won loss records than Franklin's 2021 team.

Scoreboard.

Also, anyone citing the 4 dark years of Paterno to somehow bring him down to Frauds level is a joke. Paterno is one of the 4 greatest college football coaches of all time and Franklin is 67-32...33 after this Saturday

Most people think he stayed too long but his teams were very good from 2005-2011. The scandal was a setback but that's not what currently keeps us from being elite. In fact what Joe built is what gives us a chance to be elite.

I think we have a chance to beat MSU. 8-4 with a decent bowl game would be a lot better than 7-5 and the Pinstripe Bowl.

Now before we start blowing each other I'm cognizant of the fact it was Rutgers and Veilleux isn't the second coming of Joe Montana but make no mistake, the play of the young kids invigorated Franklin and the players, in turn, fed off him. So much so it portends good things for the start of next season. Prior to today I was writing Franklin off sometime next year because I believed he'd lost the team. But not anymore. So regardless of the outcome in East Lansing just play like today, take that momentum into a bowl game and win it! Then 2022 sets up nicely and not the 2-4 start I envisioned. Complement the passing game with some run blocking and we might just start out 4-2. I know that last part is a big ask but what the hey. Get the salt peter off the training table of the offensive line.

Credit Rutgers for playing balls-out today. If you don't think they were committed then you missed Schiano chewing @ss on the sidelines.

Thank you.

Yes, that was refreshing to see!

Paterno was old for the '99 game. Should not gave been coaching and yes I understand he was able to right the ship in '05 then had a strong season in '08. Congratulations you found a game from '83 when Paterno was relatively young and the team played flat. Is that it? He also did not have nearly the talent on that team that Franklin has assembled (and yes we will give your beloved James a big atta boy for being the best recruiter in the history of college football for assemblying all that talent as I am sure you think that is the case).

The Illinois game was a joke and you know it. No excuses. MSU in '17 and '18? '17 loss blew a playoff shot. I guess Sparty was great so nothing to see there. Don't compare Paterno to Franklin, come on.

Would love to see how Joe would have fared in the B10 during his prime of the '70's and '80's. Somehow I don't think either scUM or O$U would have been gifted Rose Bowl visits every year.

Front running fanboy bandwagon jumpers quit.....not the team.

He drives me nuts standing on the sideline with his arms folded.
Lead the charge, please.

MSU struggles mightily in pass defense - PSU's offensive strength is the pass.
Getting a lead over MSU negates their ability to be one dimensional and pound the ball on the ground.
OSU put on a clinic in how to demoralize and destroy Sparty. Let's hope PSU has enough left in the tank to be OSU-light next weekend.
Lions by 10.

i know exactly what you're talking about...but that actually is an issue i've had with Franklin...throughout the years when we are blowing teams out he will scream and get in backup players faces...like the Pitt blowout years ago on the road i remember him looking like a crazy person late in the game but he doesn't do it when it really counts early in the game with his starters...he just stares and doesn't talk with maybe a shake of the head...he needs to be more consistent in how he coaches his players throughout the game...maybe that's one reason why his teams tend to have really high - highs but really low - lows off and on too frequently
Is this Joe Biden talking? Cause I have no idea what the fvck you're saying!!

The MSU game will come down to the play of the offensive line if PSU is to win. A need to run the football with some success and to protect the QB so the passing game can click. As usual this year, the defense will hold up its end of the bargain but the offense needs to eat clock and put up points…..I would estimate at least 3 TDS to win the game.

Correct that was when they were going to the big ten and took a bowl bid before the season started to guarantee big bowl $
There was a Stanford Bowl game in the early 90's (might have been right after our announcement to the B1G) but that might have been the first time I'd ever seen a PSU team quit.

PSU doesn't have an offensive strength. PSU doesn't have an offensive line.

I understand but the scholarship grid shows 91 kids eligible to return. 6 of those have to leave early just to get down to 85.
Every team is facing this. Franklin explained that the NCAA, because of Covid, let them keep a larger roster.

i will say it again...Franklin will really get into players faces (u could saying coaching them up) late in blowout games but early in games or when the game is still on the line he doesn't show that emotion/reaction to his starters...again he won't hesitate ripping young backup players but seems much more quiet and understanding with his veteran players...i would just like him to be more consistent is all throughout the game

Lol. Exaggerate much? Come talk to us when he starts “ripping” players at a Brian Kelly level.

i watch ever game till the very end and i watch his reactions to his starters vs backups...i understand u think i'm exaggerating and that's fine but i've seen a consistent pattern for years of this and it just seemed odd to me...we can agree to disagree

I don't know the 2022 Covid rules for eligibility. Does that mean kids that want to come back for an extra year don't count towards the 85 limit?

But that's not my point anyway. The thing that puts us over the 85 limit before early departures is the 26 we already have committed to the 2022 class.
