Tweet tweet.. A little birdie tells me..

yeah, among other things, they believed in celibacy; procreation was forbidden after joining the Society -- a tough way to sustain a community

Interestingly enough, a lot of Shakers lived in western New York, which also gave birth to two groups with sexual proclivities almost the opposite: Mormons and the Oneida Community

Western New York also was home to the birth of the Anti-Masonic movement in the 1820s when a Freemason was murdered by other Masons for ratting them out. The region was a bit of a nuthouse in the mid 19th century

Kind of like how a Catholic person that was divorced, is a less-than-perfect Catholic as they cannot be remarried in the Catholic church without getting the previous marriage annulled. I just love organized religion...

Don't worry, it loves you too

So the Shakers were nothing more than monkey spankers and diddlers that could make furniture.
I suppose it is safe to insult them, since there are only two left. Two old people. :)

Cassar will be the starter at 197....He gives Rasheed all he can handle and more....

Nobody was! Cody was wildly livid--inside the arena! James freaking Green was in attendance as a fan and he was not at all happy.

But nothing I've seen has indicated any unhappiness at anybody other than that ref who chose to keep his warning words in his pocket and wait til Rasheed toed the line to make any kind of deal about the hair--by calling injury time until Rasheed capped it with the net.

Thankfully, Coach Pop squashed the issue by choosing neutral on Mach's choice upon restart.
It’s not clear what the ref indicated. He sent Cody scrambling before the match whistled start....and they were already looking when the ref started injury time.

This is bogus shit I have encountered at HS level too. In Shakur’s previous match his braids were NP. Suddenly they are for a different ref. If a wrestler is deemed to have an equipment or hair problem in a tournament, it is patently unfair to threaten a DQ at match time if it was allowed in the previous match. That should have been addressed long before. I believe that was the the gripe....and warranted.

Shakur will not have the hair problem next year and has said as much.

I'm not sure who started the narrative that the ref waited until Shakur toed the line to object to his braids. I saw James Green tweet that and Christian Pyles mentioned it on FRL, but it is incorrect. The ref objected to Shakur's hair as soon as he showed up to the mat and the ref noticed it. I do not recall Cody being there at the time, but it was Cael who left to look for the cap. I assume he ran into Cody in the back. Anyway, it was at least a few minutes before the match whistled start. Nevertheless, I agree with Cowbell that threatening DQ, especially after Shakur had the braids in for the Chaid match without objection, is BS.

Whoa, first I'm seeing this...can you elaborate on: "The ref objected to Shakur's hair as soon as he showed up to the mat and the ref noticed it."

What else did you see?

I was sitting very close to the PSU corner (mat 4). Cael, Shakur, the medical staff gentleman, and Casey (or Varner, I forget which) came to the mat. Not long after, there was a conversation between the ref, Shakur, and the coaches. Cael then said something like "do you know where it is? I do" to the medical staff guy (or Casey/Varner) and Cael then walked out, past mat 1, and into the back. There was a delay until the 197 matches started, so we were just waiting (not sure how long, but at least a couple minutes I would guess). Then the matches started, the ref call both wrestlers to the circle, and injury time started for Shakur. McCutcheon came down to the rail (from sec 107) and asked if he could help. Not long after that, Cody comes sprinting in from the direction of mat 1 with the cap. That's about it.

I was on the floor near Mat 1 and that's about what I saw too. My guess is that the ref saw the braids as potentially abrasive, which is a pretty arbitrary approach since a large percentage of women wrestlers go with the braided hair. Was cool of Macchiavello to agree to start from neutral instead of choosing bottom after that.

From the Rule Book:

Section 8. Appearance
Art. 3. Hair
The hair, in its natural state, should not extend below the top of an ordinary shirt collar and on the sides shall not extend below earlobe level. Hair shall be free of oils and/or greasy substances. If an individual has hair longer than allowed by rule, it may be braided or rolled if it is contained in a cover so that the hair rule is satisfied. The hair cover shall either be a part of the ear protection or worn under the ear protection. The cover must be of a solid material and be nonabrasive. All hair covers will be considered special equipment.

Also:
Section 9. Enforcement of Mat, Uniform and Equipment Rules
Art. 2. Competitor Noncompliance.
When a competitor appears on the mat ready to wrestle in a dual meet or tournament and the referee determines the competitor does not comply with the required rules as to appearance and equipment, the offending competitor shall be charged a nonbleeding injury timeout, the injury clock started, and the injury clock stopped when the referee determines the competitor is in compliance. The time to correct the deficiency shall be cumulative with the offender’s 1 1/2 minutes of allowed injury time and shall count as the competitor's first timeout. If the competitor is not in compliance at the end of 1 1/2 minutes, that competitor shall be disqualified from participation in that match.

So in reverse order of a some of the issues raised:

1. The ref was correct in how they handled the situation, in terms of starting the injury clock if they felt Shakur came to the mat in a noncompliant condition
2. The hair rule addresses braids, but from the premise of if they are worn because the hair is too long. I don't know what general instructions college refs have been given about braids, but it's not up to the ref to determine why a wrestler is wearing braids (i.e., was the hair too long or not), so my guess is that they would default to what's in the rule book
3. So why was Shakur allowed to wrestle in an earlier match and with braids and without a hair cover? Who knows. Again, without knowing what general instructions have been passed along to refs, it's hard to know for sure. My suspicion is that the ref didn't notice the braids/lack of hair cover

To tikk's point about "a large percentage of women wrestlers go with the braided hair," keep in mind that most of the time fans observe females wrestling is in freestyle, where they are not required to wear ear protection, etc. In high school, or levels below that, in folkstyle, females are required to wear hair covers if their hair is too long (from the rules), or if they braid it.

Wow, so the ref did have an early convo with the staff. I had missed that--had only seen the ref pacing and not engaging them, while the staff scrambled. Then I saw the bout start, the injury time start and Cody absolutely livid. Then I guess James Green's tweet gave me some confirmation bias.

Anyway, thanks for the share.
