Interestingly enough, a lot of Shakers lived in western New York, which also gave birth to two groups with sexual proclivities almost the opposite: Mormons and the Oneida Community

Western New York also was home to the birth of the Anti-Masonic movement in the 1820s when a Freemason was murdered by other Masons for ratting them out. The region was a bit of a nuthouse in the mid 19th century
