Since 2011 The Penn State University has gone through the most extensive and intensive period of "image re-formulation" in history. I challenge ANYONE to find another case where the public was so convincingly sold on CRIMINAL GUILT based on the crimes of a former employee. Most amazingly, this image destruction has been done without ONE SINGLE LEGAL FACT and in light of MULTITUDE of obvious suspicious actions events and actors.

From day one of all this I have believed that all of this "Scandal" was an ENGINEERED event - just too many pieces had to be "fit" together for it to occur "naturally" and too many "unfortunate mistakes and "gotcha" events have happened to support the "Story" which the public believes.

So here is a "lens" (perspective) which can be used to better understand "the Penn State Scandal". It explains why people are so definite in what they believe as "facts" (no matter which side they take) and why it is so hard to get a change the public's perception.
It all makes sense how & why PSU/Paterno was targeted when you look through this "lens".

The Big Lie Theory
A big lie (German: Große Lüge) is a propaganda technique. The expression was coined by Adolf Hitler, when he dictated his 1925 book Mein Kampf, about the use of a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously."

Hitler asserted the technique was used by Jews to unfairly blame Germany's loss in World War I on German Army officer Erich Ludendorff.

By placing responsibility for the loss of the world war on the shoulders of Ludendorff they took away the weapon of moral right from the only adversary dangerous enough to succeed in bringing the betrayers of the Fatherland to Justice.

All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.

It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the factswhich prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.

For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.

Note that trained propagandists (known often as “spin doctors) understand how the big lie theory can be applied to “shaping” (more like creating) the public’s perception of an event.

The engineered “spin” of facts created by the “Big Lie” is designed to create a new public belief. Once the enough of the public “buys” this alternate reality, the deceived public then uses “the Big Lie” itself to disprove the factual realities that actually exist

A core principal of this theory is that if you tell a lie often enough (using the power of the mass media), some of the people who hear it will believe it. The more the lie is repeated to the public, the greater the number of people who believe “The Big Lie” is the truth.
Please note that "lies" include exaggerations and (selectively edited and) out-of-context quotes.

" I challenge ANYONE to find another case where the public was so convincingly sold on CRIMINAL GUILT based on the crimes of a former employee"

I would just add this challenge:

Find another case where an institution of the magnitude of Penn State, was "led" by such a unethical, immoral, self-serving, gut-less, ball-less, sycophantic group of self-serving Scoundrels.

Simple answer...the PSU "Leadership" was just a well-oiled$$$ cog in the "ENGINEERING" of the Big Lie.

No doubt one of the biggest, if not the biggest, tyrannies ever committed in the United States via abuse of State-Level Sovereign Power (e.g., a complete trampling of the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights that are GUARANTEED to every citizen under the Constitution -- in other words, "moral hazard" to a factor of 10 by the very lying moral-hypocrites who shouted everyone down with their "bad culture" bull$hit INTENTIONALLY FALSE NARRATIVE.

...Duke Lacrosse and specifically the players and coach, Mike Pressler. It's a reasonably close example. They were tried, convicted in court of public opinion and cut loose by the university all before it ever got to an actual courtroom.

FWIW, there are many examples of sensationalistic child sex abuse scandals and with the exception of those involving the catholic church, the almost all take years and years for the truth to see the light of day and the truth...is radically different from the sensationalized version. In their wake, is a long trail of broken careers and lives. This one sadly is playing out just like those before.
Copy that!

And I'd also add the question of besides PSU when else has a corporation/school/etc. IMMEDIATELY assumed guilt on behalf of their indicted employees before they even had their day in court and paid out MILLIONS of dollars in fines, sanctions, civil settlements, etc. based on the assumed guilt of their employees?

No company/school leaders in their right mind would EVER do that, unless of course they didn't want people to dig into the story. Yes, these guys are guilty, please give us our punishment and let's all just move along.....what a disgrace.

I was torn between laughing and crying hearing the judge's approaching in questions the burden of proof in the Brady/Patriot Inflategate hearing.

Just how something goes so far with burden of proof is a modern tragedy, even more so in the Paterno/Sandusky situation.

What's worse is that the Brady/NFL situation is a civil labor dispute governed by a crappy CBA with the NFLPA that gives the NFL such powers. The PSU thing is governed by the Constitution and the Rule of Law.

And "The Beat Goes On" Sonny and Cher

Sandusky needs a new trial to overturn ALL the previous actions of deceit, etc.

Until that day, Penn State's good name is what ever any one wants it to be, get it?

Didn't the PSU settlements specifically state The Second Mile couldnt be sued as part of the agreement? Why would PSU be worried about them?

PSU took the fall for Corbett's buddies, certain people on the BOT, and The Second Mile.
WRT your question......Yes, they did.

Hey. Why not?

It wasn't their money.....it was just lying around waiting for them to steal it, like it always has been.

The given reason is that this prevents the insurance carrier for TSM from turning around, asserting subrogation rights, and taking a second dip into the PSU pot for each alleged victim.

I don't know if that has any merit. though.

Answer: Because the objective is to make everything to away, as quickly as possible. A suit against the 2nd Mile would only serve to keep this mess in the public spotlight longer.

"They" wanted it go away as quickly as possible after affixing the patsy label on PSU, the football program, and Joe Paterno.
