Univ. of Illinois fires men's bball coach John Groce

I guess I thought that this might be coming but when you see that he has a 56% winning percentage (95-75) it is a little surprising. He was only 37-53 in Big Ten play though.

The Rutgers loss in the season finale followed by the blowout loss to Mich in the opening round of the conference tournament (along with the two earlier losses to PSU) were the ultimate kisses of death. He needed an NCAA invite this year to have any chance of staying.

He has signed a good incoming class for next fall, will be interesting to see how that all plays out.

rutgres beat Tosu. Illinois lost to michigan.

You are right, their loss to Rutgers was in the season finale game, not the conference tournament. I stand corrected and have corrected my post, thank you.

No sweat. Regardless, losing to rutgres isn't good for the resume (though it hasn't hurt Chambers yet).

I wondered how many posts it would take for someone to mention Chambers. Took 7 more than I expected.

Whenever a coach IN ANY SPORT is fired some knucklehead is going to bring up Chambers.

Remember a year ago posters were doing the same with Franklin? How did that work out?

They have really struggled to find their stroke/rhythm again after going to the NCAA final in 2004-05. I really thought that Bruce Weber would tap into the talent in Illinois, especially in Chicago, but he never did and lost his job. Groce did not do any better. The Illini used to be better, a lot better than this. It is a high-profile job and I have to figure that there will be a lot of interest from various coaches and assistant coaches around the country.

All this talk about Chambers and not one poster in the last few weeks has mentioned Marilyn Chambers. It's nothing but Pat Pat Pat!

What has happened to this Board? Tom?

What about former NBA player Tom Chambers? Or a judge's chambers?

FLAG?

I've never seen a picture of her suitable for this family-oriented Board!

How about this one:

It should take no longer than 4 years in the most dire of circumstances to evaluate a bball coach.

Better to be a fool than a total a hole. I've never played basketball with someone for more than 30min before it was clear what there skills were and what their potential was.

LOL - ass hole - LOL

I'm sure you are an exceptional athlete and judge of talent. lol

What skills and qualifications do you possess judging basketball coaches (not players, you moron)?? What coaches have you hired/fired and at what schools?

I'll anxiously await your replay..

Fool

Illinois obviously has their priorities in the wrong place: It's not about winning, it's all about defending the head coach and making excuses for him.

Hey Cincy, how's Cleveland working out?

Been going great Jim, thanks. Finally getting our house on the market so we can start really searching for our next place more seriously. Hit up Great Lakes and my first NBA game recently.

Somewhat funny story: Last week I was waiting for a train to pass in Avon Lake, looked on the ground and saw a wallet, got out and picked it up, contacted the guy and met up to give it to him. He apparently has season tix in the 1st row of the dawg pound and offered to bring me. I just said, oh, you don't want to know where i'm originally from and what colors I'd be wearing. He asked, I told him, he just said "shit..." So i politely declined.

Look son, you're guilty of a logical fallacy. You're assuming only athletic directors who have hired/fired a coach are qualified to assess whether a coach needs more than 4 years to prove themselves. Silliness. You forget about data, which is accessible to you too if you look for it...Did you know that, outside of Rutgers and PSU, every current head basketball coach in the big ten has taken their team to the tournament. Rutgers gets a pass because the current coach has been there one year. Did you know that the current head coaches collectively have 113 years of experience in the big ten and 72 ncaa tournament appearances? Did you know that the worst ncaa appearance ratio for current big ten coaches (outside of Psu and Rutgers) was one appearance in five years? (That was Illinois). Did you know that the top half of current big ten coaches go to the tournament every 1.25yrs and the bottom half good one every 3.25yrs?

In every dimension, chambers has underperformed against his peers in the big ten. I don't know what crap you do for living, but I'm truly thankful that your biasness and decision-making are far away from me. You seem to be very comfortable with shifty performance.
