Urban Meyer is apparently having issues fitting in in the NFL

Some of these guys seem like walking ulcers. For someone already wound pretty tight, UM needs to find a little zen or he’ll burn out before his team’s bye.

this is a throw away season for him. if he goes 0-17, he'll blame it on the previous admin, starting a young QB and getting the overall #1 pick. In many ways, the worse this season is, the better for Urbs.

One game with a rookie QB who did show some good things Sunday and he is done with the NFL already LOL

Or he could start having health issues right around an 0-10 start

Part of what makes Urban such a great (college) coach is that he takes winning and losing personally. These articles write themselves though with the things that have gone on.

I'll never understand why people clearly suited for college want to try their hand in the NFL.
NFL coaching success is about being an obsessive X&O guy. College coaching success is about having the charisma to inspire young men. The number of people elite at both is probably zero. BOB, Belichick, Andy Reid are NFL coaches. Urban, CJF, Chip Kelly are college coaches.

Is he following the Bill Obrien trade away your best players and get fired mantra? As as Steelers fan, I'd like to thank him. Let me know when TL is available for a couple for second rounders.

"The Jacksonville Jaguars had a bunch of holes to fill and gladly said, Yes, we’ll pay Joe Schobert what he’s worth. The Jags inked Schobert to a five-year, $53,750,000 deal ($18.850 million APY) ahead of the 2020 season.

Handsomely paid, Schobert posted one of his best years as a pro and finished the season fourth in the NFL in total tackles with 141 (six for loss). He also contributed six quarterback hits, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three interceptions. Schobert’s Week 13 pick of Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins was returned 43 yards for a score.

While Schobert, 27, was the best free-agent signing the Jaguars made in the 2020 offseason, he wasn’t head coach Urban Meyer’s boy. But what’s Jacksonville’s loss is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ gain. His leadership, knowledge, experience, and tackling prowess should make the interior line a force to be reckoned with — especially if Devin Bush can stay healthy and improve his game."

I agree...but it is about ego. After a few years, they are worth north of $20m. by the time you do salary, endorsement,s and paid personal appearances. After that, what is your next life's challenge? LIfe is weird. In one way, you have to be happy with what you've done but that leads to complacency. So you have to strive to do more, but that can lead to failure.

Uber motivated people, big egos, and pride go together. This is why guys like Bezos, Musk and Branson are doing what they are doing. Bill Gates, one of the most predatory executives or our lifetime, is suddenly trying to solve world disease. They never stop...just go to the next horizon.

Back when Saban and Steve Spurrier and Jimmy Johnson (by far the best college to pro transition) moved from the college ranks to the NFL, there was also a lot more money in NFL coaching. So a guy going from college to pro's an inking a 4 to 5 year NFL deal could have easily pocketed an extra $12-$16 million dollars which is life changing type money. But the salary difference between top college coach and NFL coach isn't even much of a difference at all anymore.

So I agree that I don't see the lure of some highly successful college coaches that have established themselves going off to the NFL. Now a guy like Matt Rhule (or Doug Marrone or BOB or Greg Schiano) who was working towards that NFL job all along and jumps from P5 middle of the pack team to NFL makes more sense.

The word out of Pittsburgh is Urban wanted vocal 'rah rah' types in Jacksonville which didn't fit Schobert's style, and opted for another LB. For some reason, Pittsburgh seems to have difficulty drafting ILBs.

Its looking like Jacksonville is headed for another 1-16 season if Sunday was any indication. Urb's might have to resign for health reasons if that happens.

Great. He can replace Franklin after James from State College becomes James from Los Angeles.

I think it's going to be one and done for UM in the NFL, he hates to lose and I don't see them winning too many games. He's probably already talked to USC.
Please create a poll as to the “ailment” that will “cause” this departure…

This is definitely not the start he envisioned. Uncompetitive vs two likely bad teams.

Urban Meyer has a net worth of more than 35 million. I wish I could fail like him.
If we had a dollar for every post about UM on this board, we'd be close to 35 million!
I would have taken UM as our coach in a hot minute. The guy can coach and recruit at a high level. That being said, PSU is in very good hands with JF.

I much prefer CJF's approach over UM. One can disagree with his demeaner, his character or whatever they want to try to punch holes in. But UM can coach football with the best that ever lived.

I don't get why guys like Urban Meyer want to go the NFL route. I guess he wanted to see if he could do it in the NFL and be successful a la Pete Carrol. I do agree that I don't think Urban Meyer has will power to go another 3 years at Jacksonville which is the amount of time it is going to take to get that team up to playoff championship caliber. I could easily see him calling it quits at end of year, going to USC and looking for a 5 year deal and winning a National Championship then at 3 schools and vying with Saban as best college coach ever. USC is perfect school for him as he can recruit California and nationally, no admissions issues, admin will turn the other way for anything Urban wants to do. The fact that the facilities and $$$ level isn't national championship quality is much less of an issue for Urban as his name and contacts alone will allow him to recruit and get some up and coming coaches at below market value.

Maybe it’s as simple as loving the coaching aspect of the job while hating the recruiting part.

He seems to like poaching PSU coaches unfortunately. That does speak well of our staff.

i don't think so, Urban was a arguably the best recruiter of all time. Somebody like O'Brien openly admitted he didn't like the recruiting side a lot. Never heard anything like that from Urban.

Meyer took the job and knew he would have to build the Jaguars up.. His whole NFL coaching career relies on Lawrence. Lawrence has shown some good things, but will need to learn to read defenses better. Everyone knew mistakes were going to happen with him. I am not ready to say Meyer is going to Bolt or has given up. Meyer one taking the job, the Jags weren't going to be KC or Tampa. Look at Jimmy Johnson who went 1-15 in first first season, but got better.

But he may be second to Ryan Day now…talk about an embarrassment of riches.
