It was a great game that fittingly went into OT. In fact, it was so well played and hard fought that both teams deserved to win. Oh well, at least we got the W against them several days ago.
This was the first time I got emotionally into a hockey game since the Cold War days of games against the Soviets...probably because I like Justin Trudeau about as much as I liked Leonid Brezhnev.
Defensive breakdown. You can't leave McDavid, the best player in the game right now, stand in front of your goal with nobody within five yards of him.
But to your point, a well-played game and one that was fitting of the hype. Congrats to the Canadians. But it is still true that the State of Nevada has enjoyed more Stanley cups than Canada since Jocques Demers' 1993 Montreal team.
I hadn't watched a hockey game in a few decades leading into the Flyers-Penguins game a few Saturdays ago. They mentioned the 4 Nations Tourney and it seemed like a cool idea, so I made it a point to tune in. Wow, what an awesome event! Hockey is back on the map for me. NBA being dead sure helps and the NHL should capitalize on it.
NHL needs to find a way to introduce the players to the general audience - NFL has high school football, college recruiting, college football, NFL combine, and NFL Draft, so the players are already household names when they arrive at NFL Training Camp.

The NHL draft is great theater. Lots of aw-shucks Canadian farm boys in ill fitting suits hitting the big time.
Congratulations to the NHL for finally figuring out the all star formula. Next time add Russia and the Czech Republic and we’ll have a mini Olympics. The NBA is still a mess and they might do well to watch and learn from the NHL…

If Trump hadn’t stirred the pot this little tournament would have been an afterthought, on par with the WNBA finals…some true fans and a few curious viewers.
It was only all the booing, the back-n-forth, the fights that electrified the crowds and made it must see tv. Seemed like the finals captured people’s excitement more than the Super Bowl.
All the announcers were ecstatic how the tournament became such a huge event, how the players were playing next level, how hockey was suddenly THE major sport of the week.
Thanks Trump, for getting a fantastic sport the attention it deserves.
That Tournament exceeded my expectations and, yes, the Russians and Czechs definitely should've had teams in it.
The only negative is that some NHL teams really are going to be hurt by the injuries that these players sustained in this Tournament, like Boston with McAvoy. Also, not that the Penguins are a playoff contender, but I suspect that Crosby will be out for a significant portion of the remainder of the season.
The disappointing thing about last night is that the US dominated most of the third period and all of the OT. Those two teams were basically even although the Canadian team has players like McDavid, MacKinnon and Makar, who are three of the top four or five players in the whole league; that just shows you how far the US has come as a hockey nation. The US did a great job of neutralizing McDavid and MacKinnon last night, but the puck found McDavid's stick at the perfect moment and, unlike Matthews, he took advantage of it. Binnington really won that game for Canada in the OT.

it started, at least in my mind, when the Canadians booed the USA's national anthem in Montreal in the first USA/Canada game.
I didn’t watch prior but reports are the US team was booed all week long. Even during warmups.
In. Helps that hockey players are badasses. No candyass injuries allowed.
Matthew Tkachuck played in the playoffs last season with a fractured sternum. Several years ago, Patrice Bergeron played in the playoffs with broken ribs. Hockey players for the most part just grow up in a different environment regarding injuries. How many times in the past did players lose teeth and come back later to play in the same game?
No one compares to Rick Tocchet of the Penquins. Took a slapshot to the face in first period. Knocked out several teeth. Had over 20 stitches during break. Scored two goals, including the game winner.
That night x rays showed he had a broken upper and lower jaw. Needed surgery and was boing to be out at least 4-6 weeks, meaning missing the playoffs.
Missed only three games, came back with a special helmet to protect his jaw he and the trainer made. Played through the playoffs and got to drink from the Cup!
Imagine the pain he had. He couldn’t eat normally because his jaws were wired shut. Had go difficult to stay hydrated ….and even breathe!
And in playoffs they play almost every other day. Only get a break if they win a short series. So very little time to recover. And other teams had no qualms about hitting him high.
Just an unbelievable show of guts. Hockey players aren’t human!

I remember that game; it was one of his first games with the Penguins in 1992 at old Chicago Stadium. Ironically, he was an assistant coach on this Canadian team.

Unfortunately for the US, Matthews didn't make an impact offensively in this Tournament until OT last night when he had several great chances to score. My guess is that he isn't healthy. I saw last night that he hasn't scored a goal in something like his last nine games played, including the last several games that he played for Toronto before the Tournament. He's probably the best goal scorer right now, and it was very disappointing that he didn't score one goal in this Tournament.
