USA vs Canada hockey

USA! USA!

Off to an exciting start lol

I don’t think the fights had anything to do with any booing during the national anthem…..which was pretty miner.

Edit: article says it was because of booing all week and all during pregame. There is a clip of the very end of the National anthem with some booing but that was the only part as I watched the whole thing.

The fights at the beginning looked to me like they were scripted WWE style.
They essentially were staged but not really for any political reason. It would've happened if Harris had won because their dad did the same thing in a World Cup years ago.

While I generally do not condone violence, fighting in hockey is used to strategically impact momentum. A former Hartford Whalers head coach explained to me that most professional teams are pretty even, and that there are usually only a few big plays that make the difference in a game. These all star teams are very much equivalents- with the USA favored in this tournament for maybe the first time.

When the opponent is stealing "the jump" then one strategy is to send out a fighter to get it back. Typically the pugilists are guys who otherwise would be working in a saw mill in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan so don't feel bad for them. They're thrilled to be there because it is not their hockey skills that got them to the league.

The backdrop of the tariffs and anthem stuff added to the allure- but make no mistake- the boys were going to bring it regardless. Hugel agreed to the 1st fight-which is often the process. These are not random assaults.

Hoping that we bring it again in Boston- but I wouldn't expect a redux of the start. In a championship game small errors change outcomes- like Canada's sloppy line change last night.

That Miller started the 3rd fight was nonsensical- he dropped his gloves before anyone else looking for a partner and got an extra 2 minutes....which could've undone everything.

Neat game and epic first 9 seconds- etched forever into hockey lure.

Very unique to hockey that fighting is actually a respected strategy in a game. Have often seen momentum completely change after a big fight.

Was watching a Pens game many years ago, don’t remember opponent but probably Rangers or Devils. There small fights and scrums all over the whole first period. Right near the end of the period the two enforcers of each team squared off.

The two behemoths fought what seemed like ten minutes, landing haymaker after haymaker. Both were so exhausted at the end that they were leaning on each other just to stay up on their skates. Epic.

As they slowly skated off Mike Lange said there won’t be another fight the rest of the game ‘out of respect for what those two players did’. I thought there would be even more as guys were pissed but Lange was correct…..not a single fight the next two periods!

I watch a lot of college basketball and notice that when players get the ball in the paint or around the elbow, they almost never look to shoot but rather look to pass to another for a three point shot. Because of this, a lot of these players struggle to even make two point baskets.

The game of basketball at the college level just has become mostly a three pointing shooting contest, which has made the sport, at least for me, boring; it’s bears very little resemblance to the sport when that the Showtime Lakers and 1980s Celtic teams played.
Statistically speaking, shooting 33% from the 3 point line is the equivalent of shooting 50% from inside the arc.

Take six 3's, make 2: 6 points. Take six 2's, make 3: 6 points.

This thought process has led us to the 3 point shooting exhibition that the NBA has become.

I know that many will think that this is crazy, but the game in general might become better if goals from inside the arc would count for three points and goals from outside the arc would count for two points. That would make players need to execute the intricacies of the game better rather than playing this three point shooting contest into the sport has devolved; it’s just an incredibly boring product right now.
If that happened, we'd return to just dumping it into genetic freaks whose height makes up for lack of talent ... and then folks would complain about how boring that is.

There aren't any easy answers ... folks have just become too darned good. You now have athletic 7 footers who can dribble and shoot, and guys who can shoot from near half court, just because of how much work they've put in, and the wealth of knowledge and teaching they've been able to draw from.

You basically have to redesign the court, or gameplay, and that'll have unintended consequences, that people will also complain about.

The best fight was when the Red Wings went after Claude Lemieux for his cheap shot on Draper. McCarty beating his turtling ass was cathartic and I’m not even a Red Wings fan.

And then Shanahan intercepting Roy with a forearm shiver.

Max Talbot got into an altercation in a 2009 playoff game against the Flyers in Philly. IIRC, the Pens were down 2 maybe 3 goals and playing without intensity. I believe that the Pens came back to win the game, then the Series and eventually the Stanley Cup.

And while I definitely believe that the fights were pre arranged. At least the 1st 2. But the intensity of the altercation resembled a UFC fight more than a traditional hockey fights between 'enforcers' from each team.

These are all star teams and the stars are fighting.

Imagine if there was an NFL all star game equivalent with the type of intensity and desire to win that was on display last night.

Interesting...my first thought was eliminate the 3 point line...its outlived its usefulness IMO

Part of their anger is several teams have left Canada, and no Canadian team has won the Cup or even made the finals in a long time.
But these types of events (Olympics, World Championship type tournaments, etc.) is where Team Canada has flourished.

What was the stat with Sid playing for Teram Canada in world competition before this past Saturday's contest - I think 26-0?

I hope that Team USA realizes that they have accomplished as much as Oregon did defeating OSU during the regular college football season. If Team USA does not win on Thursday, then all of the chest thumping that everyone is doing will just have been noise.

Team Canada needs a regulation win this afternoon to secure their rematch with Team USA in Boston on Thursday night.

I have to believe that Canada will beat Finland by a similar score as the US did. I thought that Sweden was the better team against Canada for the final two periods of their game, but then they lost to Finland in OT.

As I am an avid hockey fan, it obviously would be great for the sport to have Canada-US for the Championship on Thursday night when it would get a lot of attention from even casual fans.

I agree. I believe that there is a sentiment among many Canadians that hockey is their game, but there is an American Commissioner who has catered to expanding the game in American markets and has foresaken Canadian markets.

The fact is that Canada has a very small population, especially compared to the US, and many more American kids, even in non-traditional hockey areas like California, Florida and Arizona, are growing up playing the sport. Just look at this US team; Matthews grew up in Arizona, the Tkachuks grew up in St. Louis, Trocheck and Miller played their youth hockey in Pittsburgh, etc. Just based on numbers alone, it's going to be hard for Canada to remain the dominant hockey country. I mean, the US Junior team is winning that Tournament regularly, including this past one.

Hockey Canada realizes that the US Hockey Development Model has been incredibly successful, and has begun to emulate it, like having mites play half ice games rather than on full rinks to establish skills and play fast and make quick decisions.

Felt bad for fans of Quebec Nordiques when the team moved to Colorado and won the Cup the first year after leaving. That had to really hurt.

Would love to see a Canadian team win it soon.

It's mind boggling that Toronto has not even made the Finals since 1967, and I believe that they still have won the second most Stanley Cups.

The Canadian team that might have the best shot to win the Cup this season is Winnipeg, and that would be absolute death for the TV ratings in the US. At least last season, the networks could sell McDavid, who still is one of the most anonymous great players in all of sports because he plays in Western Canada. It still amazes me that ESPN is a broadcast partner for the NHL, but the NHL hardly ever gets a mention on its Shouting Heads shows unless it's for something negative.

I read an article that said the state of Nevada has won more Stanley Cups than all of Canada since something like 1993.

Canada has a real problem with pro sports. Players don't want to play their because of the tax issues compared to the USA. Last I checked, the top tax rate was 53%. Ouch.

When I lived in Akron, I had a good friend who was a big-time real estate agent. One day, a guy walked into the office and said "I need to buy a house in excess of $400,000 in Bath, Ohio and I need it to close by 5:00 on Friday. It was a Tuesday. They found a house, wrote a check, bribed a title company, and closed by 5:00 on Friday. Why the rush? Bath Ohio has no RITA tax, which is 2.5% in most areas in Ohio. Hot Rod Williams was signing a contract with a $16m signing bonus. The Cavs front-ended the contract because the NBA has a minimum team salary and they needed to give this money to someone so they opted to negotiate it out as a front-end payout. So do the math, 2.5% of $16,000,000 is $400,000. Basically, it was a free house.

Unfortunately, despite the tax situation, players probably would prefer to sign with the Blue Jays rather than the Pirates.

The Jays have a GREAT GM. He used to be the GM of the Guardians and put together the foundation of what the team is doing now. And don't forget, Toronto would be the 3rd or 4th largest cities in the USA if it was in America. I used to work for a small company there and had no idea how populated the area was. They call it the GTA or Greater Toronto Area. They've got a TON of money to spend. I used to stay at the Marriott overlooking the baseball field which I could get for cheap during the off-season, and then walk to the office from there. COVID ended that, sadly. I used to tell them that they were the "Miami" of Canada. The southern most major city.

I've been to Toronto many times, and it's a great city. I went there the first time in October 1981 on a freshman high school field trip; we went to the CN Tower and the Ontario Science Centre, and then were allowed to have some time to ourselves walking around downtown and doing some shopping. To tell you how times have changed, I almost can't believe that I walked the streets of one of the largest North American cities in a different country with some friends when I only was 14 and knew nothing about the world. I ended up getting a Toronto Maple Leafs satin jacket on that trip, which I still have and wear sometimes.

I last was there in January 2017 on one of my nephew's travel hockey trips. On that trip, I visited the Hockey Hall of Fame, which isn't very big but is a very nice museum.

While it is surprising that a 14 yr old was allowed to roam a major city without adult supervision the real shock of the story is that you can still fit in a jacket that you bought when you were 14!!!🙀

Did you eat at "Gretzky's"? I understand it went under during the COVID lockdowns three years ago.

We did have chaperones, but of course there weren't enough to stay with all of us. Oh well, everything turned out well and it was a great learning experience dealing with different currency, etc. Regarding the jacket, thankfully, I'm still able to do cardio three times a week and keep in pretty good shape.

I was a teenager in the early to mid 80s during the Starter Satin Jacket craze, and my brother and I got a lot of them for all different sports. I still think that those jackets are great. I have a white PSU one that unfortunately has become discolored, so I've been thinking about buying a blue one on eBay.

Greatest hockey game ever....USA beats the Soviets when we were still amateur athletes!!!

Possibly the greatest sports upset ever. Still can't believe that happened decades later
It was an upset and probably a great one, but that USA team had several players who went on to have long and very good NHL careers like Ken Morrow, Mike Ramsey, Neil Broten, Mrk Johnson, and some others. The reason why it was a great upset is because the USA was a college All Star team that beat a pseudo pro team that had played together for years. If that same game had been played a few years later, it might have been considered to be such an upset but not a great one because several of those USA players had become establshed NHL players.

I love reading a good, faked-up Obliviax story ... but even by Obliviax's Tommy Flanagan standards, this one is a doozy. An "I knew a guy" Obliviax story is like one of those books where you try to find the hidden images on each page ... how many lies/inaccuracies can you spot?

This one involves an NBA star who was once a central figure in a point-shaving scandal, once again risking his freedom by committing felonies, allegedly to save on some real estate taxes. This might be one of Obliviax's most baseless, lie-filled yarns yet.

Williams' contract didn't include a $16M signing bonus. It was $4M. The entire contract was 7 years for $26.5M total (a top 5 contract at the time). The Cavs didn't front-end the contract to meet some NBA team-minimum ... in fact, the Cavs were OVER the salary cap that year (the Williams signing allowed them to do that because they were retaining a vet, and that was an exception to the cap) and had the HIGHEST team payroll in the NBA that year. Williams had been originally drafted by the Cavs in the 2nd round, so his first contract was peanuts, and he never signed another contract with the Cavs, beyond the first one and then the 7-year one - he was traded away during that 7-year deal and never returned.

Seeing as Obliviax's imaginary $16M doesn't exist (the $4M signing bonus and first year's salary weren't close to $16M), the rest of the story has already been debunked ... as the math is no longer mathing.

Now, I'm not familiar with RITA ... but virtually no residence-based tax is going to let you skate entirely if you lived in a taxable area for around half the year (contract signed during the summer). So there would be no reason to go nuts and commit felonies in order to expedite the house-hunting process, if he was choosing to relocate.

I looked up the RITA tax rates, and, by far, the most common rates listed were 0% and 1%. 2% was pretty common. 2.5% was very rare. Of course, this all could have been very different back then ... but I doubt it (it's Obliviax we're talking about here). Property taxes are also comparatively high in that county, so any RITA tax advantage that would be gained would be at least partially offset by the property tax.

I just don't get why he consistently makes up fairy tales like this. It must be a compulsion.
