USA vs Canada hockey

Evenly matched teams.

Great event.

Political backdrop elevated attention.

US had their chances.

Canadian goalie was mvp.

Canada deserved W.

Congrats to them

It was a great game that fittingly went into OT. In fact, it was so well played and hard fought that both teams deserved to win. Oh well, at least we got the W against them several days ago.

This was the first time I got emotionally into a hockey game since the Cold War days of games against the Soviets...probably because I like Justin Trudeau about as much as I liked Leonid Brezhnev.

Defensive breakdown. You can't leave McDavid, the best player in the game right now, stand in front of your goal with nobody within five yards of him.

But to your point, a well-played game and one that was fitting of the hype. Congrats to the Canadians. But it is still true that the State of Nevada has enjoyed more Stanley cups than Canada since Jocques Demers' 1993 Montreal team.

I hadn't watched a hockey game in a few decades leading into the Flyers-Penguins game a few Saturdays ago. They mentioned the 4 Nations Tourney and it seemed like a cool idea, so I made it a point to tune in. Wow, what an awesome event! Hockey is back on the map for me. NBA being dead sure helps and the NHL should capitalize on it.

NHL needs to find a way to introduce the players to the general audience - NFL has high school football, college recruiting, college football, NFL combine, and NFL Draft, so the players are already household names when they arrive at NFL Training Camp.

Make (or Made) Hockey Great Again.

The NHL draft is great theater. Lots of aw-shucks Canadian farm boys in ill fitting suits hitting the big time.

Trump 0-2 in sporting events in the last 2 weeks. The Eagles sent his ass home at halftime - throwing his Chiefs #1 foam finger down in disgust - and now this crushing loss.
If Trump hadn’t stirred the pot this little tournament would have been an afterthought, on par with the WNBA finals…some true fans and a few curious viewers.

It was only all the booing, the back-n-forth, the fights that electrified the crowds and made it must see tv. Seemed like the finals captured people’s excitement more than the Super Bowl.

All the announcers were ecstatic how the tournament became such a huge event, how the players were playing next level, how hockey was suddenly THE major sport of the week.

Thanks Trump, for getting a fantastic sport the attention it deserves.

Congratulations to the NHL for finally figuring out the all star formula. Next time add Russia and the Czech Republic and we’ll have a mini Olympics. The NBA is still a mess and they might do well to watch and learn from the NHL…
That Tournament exceeded my expectations and, yes, the Russians and Czechs definitely should've had teams in it.

The only negative is that some NHL teams really are going to be hurt by the injuries that these players sustained in this Tournament, like Boston with McAvoy. Also, not that the Penguins are a playoff contender, but I suspect that Crosby will be out for a significant portion of the remainder of the season.

The disappointing thing about last night is that the US dominated most of the third period and all of the OT. Those two teams were basically even although the Canadian team has players like McDavid, MacKinnon and Makar, who are three of the top four or five players in the whole league; that just shows you how far the US has come as a hockey nation. The US did a great job of neutralizing McDavid and MacKinnon last night, but the puck found McDavid's stick at the perfect moment and, unlike Matthews, he took advantage of it. Binnington really won that game for Canada in the OT.

it started, at least in my mind, when the Canadians booed the USA's national anthem in Montreal in the first USA/Canada game.

In. Helps that hockey players are badasses. No candyass injuries allowed.
Matthew Tkachuck played in the playoffs last season with a fractured sternum. Several years ago, Patrice Bergeron played in the playoffs with broken ribs. Hockey players for the most part just grow up in a different environment regarding injuries. How many times in the past did players lose teeth and come back later to play in the same game?

No one compares to Rick Tocchet of the Penquins. Took a slapshot to the face in first period. Knocked out several teeth. Had over 20 stitches during break. Scored two goals, including the game winner.

That night x rays showed he had a broken upper and lower jaw. Needed surgery and was boing to be out at least 4-6 weeks, meaning missing the playoffs.

Missed only three games, came back with a special helmet to protect his jaw he and the trainer made. Played through the playoffs and got to drink from the Cup!

Imagine the pain he had. He couldn’t eat normally because his jaws were wired shut. Had go difficult to stay hydrated ….and even breathe!

And in playoffs they play almost every other day. Only get a break if they win a short series. So very little time to recover. And other teams had no qualms about hitting him high.

Just an unbelievable show of guts. Hockey players aren’t human!

I remember that game; it was one of his first games with the Penguins in 1992 at old Chicago Stadium. Ironically, he was an assistant coach on this Canadian team.

Nah. I’d rather he grow up. If you had a disabled child on Medicaid - which his Project 2025 minions are threatening - you’d be salty too.

But, hey, it doesn’t impact you, so who gives a ****, right?
they are not threatening Medicaid. They are threatening medicaid fraud. Who is telling you they are threatening medicaid?

Unfortunately for the US, Matthews didn't make an impact offensively in this Tournament until OT last night when he had several great chances to score. My guess is that he isn't healthy. I saw last night that he hasn't scored a goal in something like his last nine games played, including the last several games that he played for Toronto before the Tournament. He's probably the best goal scorer right now, and it was very disappointing that he didn't score one goal in this Tournament.

FFS...it doesn't impact anyone b/c you're regurgitating a bs talking point from TDS deranged MSM losers. They lie about everything just like they lied about Trump calling neonazis good people in his "both sides" comment. If you watch the whole clip he explicitly condemns the neonazi/white nationalists groups but even that didn't stop the MSM from just clipping that context out and running with a blantent lie. In addition to the msm pushing this lie it was also pushed by obama and biden.

How many times do you need to be lied to before you tune them out and start thinking/researching for yourself?

Go ahead and find a clip/statement from President Trump saying he's in favor of cutting off Medicaid for disabled kids.

So glad the board's preeminent purveyor of conspiracy theories, and resident chief paranoid schizophrenic, stopped by to try to instruct us on where to get our information. You still hanging on every word of Q, the child porn distributor, Qanon Qrazy? Still pushing that planes didn't crash into the WTC? That Sandy Hook was a hoax? That Hillary was arrested, yet being allowed to walk around as if she wasn't arrested to avoid a riot?

Sorry, you were saying something about preferred methods of being informed ...

To add insult to injury, it appears to me that it was Austin Mathews who seemed to drift leaving McJesus the spacing needed for the opening.

Our best scorer had 3 great shots in OT- but their goalie made 3 great stops.

Their best scorer played a mediocre game, had one great shot in OT, in part due to lax D by our best scorer, and he buried it.

Nothing our goalie could reasonably do.

Game over. Deservedly so.

That’s ****ing rich - researching/thinking for myself. My oldest boy is 22. He got diagnosed with epilepsy and autism at the age of 2. I was told he would probably never talk when he was 4. His IQ is about 60. My younger boy is 17, diagnosed at 2 as well, non verbal as well.

His mom and I have been researching this area for about 18 ****ing years to try to figure out how we are best going to be able to situate them for when we are too old to care for them. We know all about Medicaid Waivers, block grants, HCS programs, ISD programs, state waiting list procedures, etc. But, yeah, you’ve listened to a 10 minute part of a Joe Rogan podcast on federal entitlements and think you know anything about this issue.

Project 2025 - despite all its obfuscating bureaucratic jargon - would absolutely lower federal funding for Medicaid. And without that funding, states can’t make up the difference. I actually might be spared because my boys are so severely disabled that they might (hopefully) avoid any cuts, but I’m not holding my breath. This will result in the families of a lot of impaired elderly and disabled adults and children having to make really tough choices about where their loved ones live, whether they need to institutionalize their loved ones, etc. I think Trump is not at all the main driver of this - people like Russell Vought are.

Imagine the kind of people you can get to care for a disabled person for $18/hr. Now imagine funding being cut to $13/hr. I make good money and can spend $40-$50 k extra per year to make sure I’ve got competent people caring for my boys when I’m working, but most people can’t even come close.

Yep. And that is the game of hockey when it comes down to one game. I recall the Penguins scoring a critical goal when the puck came off the shooter's stick funny, sideways, and leaked between the goalie's shoulder and the pipe. No way was it on purpose, he was just putting the puck on the net. While I'd have loved to have won, great for Canada who eats, breaths and shits hockey.

Have you read Project 2025 chapter on Medicaid? I’m all for chasing fraudsters, but don’t be fooled. The only way they can find offsets for their massive tax cut plans is to go after entitlements. Nibbling at discretionary spending won’t do it.

All that said. I don’t think there’s a stomach for gutting it with a majority of Congress because they will get hammered by their constituents. Doesn’t mean I’m not worried

The govt has said, repeatedly, that they would not cut Medicare and Medicaid benefits. But it is clear that there needs to be changes lest it will go bankrupt. Right now, an effort is being made to tighten up the process to minimize waste, fraud, and abuse. I think that is prudent. However, the media wants to scare people so there you go. Until someone announces lost benefits, I wouldn't pay attention.

I don't agree at all. The fraud and waste is massive with ss and M/M. Everyone has promised to NOT cut SS and MM. Everyone knows that is complete political suicide. While others will disagree, the oversight on how money was spent at USAID, DOD and others is off-the-charts stupid. Every company I know, north of 50 employees, has fields that MUST be completed in order to move that money. And several of those fields make it possible to track what program the money is coming from, who authorized it, where it is going and how it is getting there. All of this is necessary to effectively audit money movement to minimize W, F and Abuse. Absent of that, I'll bet 20% of the funding falls into W, F, and A. And that isn't just someone trying to steal money but also overcharges for drugs, care, beds, supplies, etc. I'll bet there are billions being paid out for programs long exhausted but never terminated because nobody does.

I'll give you an example. I've got a buddy who got rich walking into big business and saying "give me access to your computer room and operations. I'll give you a report and you can pay me 1/2 of everything I save you. There is no risk and if I find nothing you owe me nothing." He simply went to IT and got a list of all the reports that were printed, back when we printed them, and followed them through the system. In over 50% of the cases, when he asked what they were for, they were from a request by someone who was no longer with the company and not needed. He'd then add up the cost of printers, CPU time, paper, and ribbons. He'd do the math, come up with a list of reports eliminated, and drive home with a check for several hundred thousand of dollars.

Let the process play out. Don't be swayed by people trying to scare you and the left or right.

I hear you and respect your opinion on this. Going after waste, fraud and abuse should be a driving force of every administration. The last part is the problem - it’s already too late to do much once the benefits have been cut.

It’s an Olympics competition every yr between the absolute best players in the world. Sure, you’ll have opt outs. Sure you’ll have injuries. But the boys will show up every year. Two weeks of hockey bliss would make the post NFL timeframe enjoyable. The networks would pay huge $$$. The focus of world sports would be on NHL for those two weeks every year! The players would cash in!

Probably nothing you can do about it until Nov of 2026 anyway.

I don't either. But it is clear that the other side couldn't be trusted either. There is a report that a new non-government charity was set up three months ago and had a $100 bank balance. In mid-January, they were given $20B. WFT? Now, who knows what is going on here but it is very suspicious. And that $20B could have been used to help M/M from going bankrupt.

This effort has been long time needed and a long time coming. I work in financial computing and the fundamental controls that have not been put into place in the Federal Govt (just as bad in local and state) are ****ING criminal. That I know, personally, as a fact. The only question in my mind is if it was due to incompetence or if was it criminal. Either way, not a good reflection on the oversight of the taxation of are hard earned income.

First of all, my gosh, what you guys have been through with the challenges of raising your two sons in the circumstances you describe is...well...there are no words. You may not be a religious person, but if so, I'd say there's a special place waiting in Heaven for you...and your kids too.

One of my nieces is severely autistic, though not to the level you describe in your post, and the lives of her parents, one of whom tragically died of cancer a few years ago, have in many ways been governed by the hard reality of caring for their daughter. Now in her 20s, she's a sweet young woman...calls me for my birthday...but cannot live independently and never will.

Anyway, I understand how preemptively angry you would be at the thought of the program cuts that you're talking about, but honestly, it's not going to happen. For one thing, it would be wrong. For another thing, it would be politically disastrous. Trump knows this which is why he long ago disavowed Project 2025. Believe me, he is not going to preside over cuts to trademark programs that his voting base of middle- and working-class people rely on.
