Video: BWI goes one-on-one with Suriano, Cortez and Nevills

3 nice interviews. Each wrestler had some interesting things to say.

Suriano looks to be pretty much the same guy I spent a long time chatting with last Jan or Feb (can't remember which). He is laser focused on what he wants, and will not be outworked in his pursuits.

The interview with Cortez was enlightening. I didn't know that he went to bed the night before his college announcement thinking he was going to PSU. 133 is a loaded weight class. Will be interesting to see what kind of offense he displays early in the season.

Hard to imagine that Nevills is a wrestler. He's so relaxed. I've spoken with his youngest brother, Seth, and he's got the same type of personality. They each have a Jekyll/Hyde complex, where they become active and aggressive when on the mat.

Sorry about the technical difficulties in the first one. This one should be ready to go.

My interviews with freshman Nick Suriano (125), sophomore Jered Cortez (133) and sophomore Nick Nevills (285) – all three of whom are gearing up for their first seasons as full-time starters.

Suriano appears to be a Megaludis clone on camera. I just hope he is a Megaludis clone on the mat!

...Nick will have a good test early on when we wrestle Lehigh...
...their lightweight - RS Jr. Darian Cruz - was a two-time PIAA Champion and third his Soph year at Becahi...he was a freshman AA and was the EIWA champion last year as a RS Soph...
...he was never very successful against Megaludis but not many wrestlers were...

even earlier than that.

he'll wrestle Connor Schram on 11/13. He takes on Darian Cruz on 12/4. In January he'll battle Tim Lambert on 1/8, and Thomas Gilman on 1/20. Also, does anyone know if Lizak will be able to go for Minny on 1/6, or will be still be suspended? (Note: I haven't tried to project who he might face at the Keystone Classic or the Reno TOC.)

By the time Nick gets to B1Gs, he'll be battle tested, and have seen quite an array of talented college 125 lbsers.

Cael mentioned the Stanford match as a big early test for him.
Schram is tough to score on.

...Cruz finished 5th at last year's Southern Scuffle...
..Schram finished 8th...
...probably almost equal in talent though I believe Cruz is small for the weight..

Note: bold added by me.

I think they are pretty equal. In the Scuffle Cruz lost to Nico in the semis, while Schram lost to Lizak (Minny) in R2. If you go to the end of the season, Schram defeated Cruz in R2 of Nationals, 3-1. Schram went on to place 8th, while Cruz did not AA

IIRC the Goofer suspensions were just for the fall semester. So Lizak should be able to go on 1/6.

Keystone Open: I believe the only returning NCAA qualifiers are Zach Fuentes (Drexel) and LJ Bentley (Pitt).

Reno TOC: team list here: https://rtoc.net/teams/
Assuming all teams send their starters, toughest competition would be Schram, Piccinnini, and Templeman (Wyoming).

Ej-Jefe, thanks for the info on Lizak, and for looking up the KC and Reno TOC toughest competitors for Suriano.

Templeman might also not be at 125 for Reno. Alex just did his B12 preview today -- decision not yet made as to whether Templeman goes 125 or 133 this year.
