Wannstedt on '86 Miami: Why we wore army fatigues to dinner with Penn State

One thing is certain, Johnson and Wanny had no control over THAT team. Wanny is one of the dumbest people ever to call himself coach.

Wanny was right--there was never a more talented college team than that 86 Miami squad. Why did they lose? Nobody in the whole outfit had any discipline, including the coaches.

Disagree, I know we hate Wanny cause he is a Spitter, but I always thought he was a good coordinator, but you are right about head coaching.

I also met him at a Pirates game, one of the nicest guys you will ever meet.

Nice guy, good coordinator don't equate to good leader, smart and in control. That 86 Miami team and coaching staff was a train wreck.

Not saying he is not a nice guy, but I just listened to him talk for whatever the length of that audio piece was and he is a person of low intellect and poor education. He is ill-spoken almost to the point of incoherence. Doofus.

Unfortunately, I cannot download the audio file - may be blocked here at work (not sure). What exactly did he say?

He has worked at the top of his field for years and has made mucho $$ doing it, I don't know if I would call him dumb.

he kept saying "there were no cell phones!" like we are all 9 or something, then tells us when he sees the team wearing camo he runs into the hotel to call Johnson, looking for a "cell phone." He told the story as though he were a spectator, not the assistant head coach.

A couple years after that game I was talking to one of my fraternity brother's dad who knew one of the referees in the game. This is the story he told me about the coin toss at the beginning of the game (up to you whether to believe or not, I do):

The Miami captains came out and were just staring down the PSU captains. The head ref asked Jerome Brown to call it in the air and flipped the coin while Jerome said nothing and continued to stare. The ref picked up the coin and re-explained that he needed to call heads or tails while in the air, but JB repeated the silent stare down. The head ref picked up the coin the second time, handed the ball to another ref and said (pointing to the UM captains) "Tell those motherf$%#ers they are kicking off".

They wore the clothes because they stated "this is war and we don't eat with the enemy".

That is a true story. I heard it from a captain of the PSU team that year who was on the field for the coin toss.

Miami did the same stare down routine to Oklahoma when the Sooners played in Miami in September 1986. It did not work in their favor against us, however.

I just listened to him tell a story on live radio. He can barely tell the story coherently. sorry, but he seems pretty dumb. As for what you think of me, I care even less about that than Wanny would care about what I think, if that is possible.

I know I will get flak for this...BUT.....having heard Wanny speak a number of times over the years....he is what an a-typical "Yinzer" is to me. He sounds like he has marbles in his mouth when he speaks. (And yes, I know there a lot of other parts of the country where people speak poorly).

He's all over the place. He makes Lee Corso and Lou Holtz sound like the Rev, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Abraham Lincoln.

HAA! My ex-girlfriends deserve a guy just like him.:) He is just tiresome.

Well....in fairness, the same could be said for Paris Hilton, Mike Tyson, ........... and Joe Theismann.

“The word ‘genius’ isn’t applicable in football. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.”

Or, as I believe, it was Bill Walsh who said "An intellectual in this (football coaching) profession is the guy with the National Geographic subscription."

I know Wanny, too. Heckuva nice guy, but not very bright.

In that audio clip, Wanny talks about how he was watching film with his defensive players and allowed them to smoke his cigarettes. That's a new one.

Interesting comments but one thing is certain, coaches have no control over their team. Audible link.

Hear a great story last night from Mike Misinelli radio show. Night before game, John Shaffer and some OL went out to dinner at a Steakhouse. It was a 2 door vehicle and Shaffer was in back behind driver. When they arrived, the driver thought Shaffer was going out the passenger side and slammed the door on Shaffers left hand. They didn't report it to the trainer and Shaffer kept it on ice all night. I didn't recall, but they he fumbled the snap on the very first play.

Why would you get flack for complimenting people from the Pittsburgh area?

2001 Miami had the most talent. They had 38 players drafted and 17 first round picks. Not too bad.

Art, I miss those befuddled looks on his face every Thursday night during the season.

Wanny was at his bamboozled best during the backyard brawls and bowl games(I'll t-a-a-a-k-e door number three?). He was like a magician making half time leads vanish into thin air. That being said, Pitt was much better of with him staring blankly on the sidelines than they have been since he was "retired".

The Miami players wore camo because they were going to war and they don't sit down with the enemy...after all, the Americans didn't sit down to dinner with the Germans after they bombed Pearl Harbor...ha!

Posted that above. That's what one of their thugs actually said.

He was on FoxSports1's CFB pre-season show last night. He was so inarticulate, I couldn't even stand listening to him. He reminded me of some Yinzer you'd meet in almost any corner bar in the 'Burgh.

They were talking trash during the Oklahoma coin toss. It was X-rated IIRC.

I actually thought Wanny explained the whole event quite well. I don't see Wanny as dumb. Our coaches had a great defensive game plan as did their coaches. It was a great college football game and as Wanny said it will never be repeated.

That coaching staff had Butch Davis and Jimmy Johnson. Two very good college coaches. The Miami 86 team was wild and I could not stand them but that team had huge talent with very good coaching. They lost to Penn State because of some better defensive game planning.
