The Washington FG kicker missed two tonight, last one with 3 seconds remaining that would have forced OT. His earlier miss was much closer in. So important to have a reliable FG kicker
Yep, I was hoping they would win for our strength of schedule. Michigan and USC at home. Indiana and Iowa on the road. They will do well to go .500 meaning they come to HV with 4 losses. Not the quality opponent we had hoped if that comes to fruition but still a lot of football to be played.White out game is losing some luster this year with each passing week. UDub with 2 losses now, (3-2), and they have Michigan, Iowa, Indiana, and USC in the next 4 weeks before the PSU game.
Sadly the white out game lost luster when Big Noon was implemented. There's no better way to take the shine and energy off the white out experience than to hold it against teams like Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois (faux Whiteout), Washington, etc. where PSU wins handily and the opponent is neither a big national football program brand, blueblood, nor a top ranked opponent. In the future people will look back on a white out game vs. unranked Minnesota as the beginning of it's downfall, unless they take action to fix this.White out game is losing some luster this year with each passing week. I guess they deserved to win. Washington drove into the red zone seemingly every drive. Two failed 4th down conversions (with wide open guys missed), three missed FGs. I have no idea why Washington's RB (Coleman) did not play the last couple drives. He already had 148 yds and is clearly their best option. Schiano always has his guys playing hard, but... Washington has some talent, including big nasty OL (three personal fouls). They lost this game with tons of mistakes. They have a boatload of transfers, If they gel a little more could be a tough out later in the season. And don't think travelling all the way across the country doesn't have an effect, especially on a Friday night.Play of the game: near end of 2nd qtr 7-3 Knights- UW blocks an RU fg. BUT a UW freshman who I guess was on special teams but not on the play RAN ONTO THE FIELD while the players scrummed to pick up the ball.
Flag resulted in RU 1st down. QB throws a nice TD pass w 30 secs left. 14-3 at half with no time on clock for UW to drive (they would've had the ball around the 35/40 after the block).
Agreed on UW not a good team at the moment- but there is talent. They are hating the flight back b/c they lost the game as much or more than RU won
To be clear- RU deserved the W. "Black Out" was spirited and game was sold out. 2nd highest attendance in history behind our game there 2 years ago (we were there). Their RBs are very very good and QB can make solid decisions or plays with arm or feet.
But UW shat the bed with 3 fg misses, costly penalties and overall poor decisions like running onto the field during a live play.
RU avoids us, OSU and Michigan. Could be their best record in Big Ten play ( my wife went there and is happy!)
Most of the talk is about the Miami win but this was a much bigger game for PSU because we need to beat a good Washington team to help our strength of schedule.I guess they deserved to win. I agree that Fox has ruined the White Out. ABC had it right just airing it at night versus our best opponent. A real simple formula that Fox has totally screwed up. It is another example where money has taken the soul out of this great game.Sadly the white out game lost luster when Big Noon was implemented. PSU: Hey FOX, check out this awesome night game product and environment! Would you like to pay a bunch of money to get it on your network?
FOX: Hells yeah, this is awesome! We want to be able to air that game, it draws ratings and excitement!
FOX: Hey Penn State, that cool product and those ratings that we liked so much that we factored it into our media contract offer? Yeah, we want to air it at noon now.
PSU and every CFB fan everywhere: WTF is wrong with you?!
I didn't realize Rutgers avoids all those top teams. Thst is not right. Most of the talk is about the Miami win but this was a much bigger game for PSU because we need to beat a good Washington team to help our strength of schedule.
Total offense favored Washington 521 to 200 but they still found a way to lose. Ouch! Now they've got to play Michigan, Iowa, USC, PSU, and Oregon. This Washington team could finish 6-6 but be much better than their record indicates.
I'm concerned that a 10-2 PSU could miss out on the playoffs due to strength of schedule. OSU will make the playoffs. USC is in if they finish 10-2 with a win over PSU. Oregon should finish 10-2 or better with their schedule. Michigan is still in the hunt. The playoffs won't take 5 BiG teams and they might not even take 4.
P.S. There's even a chance that Rutgers finishes 10-2 but their schedule is very weak. How the heck to they avoid OSU, Michigan, PSU, and Oregon? The only historically top team they play is USC.
wow, I just peaked at the stats after reading your post. W with 521 total yards and only 18 points. Rutgers with 299 total yards! Washington with 314 yards passing to R's 115. Even with that passing disparity, W still outrushed R 207 to 184. Yet, no turnovers and only ten penalties (although W had 69 yards in penalties).I guess they deserved to win. Yet many 2 loss teams will be in or in contention. SOS always mattersWe go 11-1 or better and we are in. If we lose two games we don’t deserve to be in.
Nah, the white out lost its luster when it went from something spontaneous to an event marketed by the university and planned way too far in advance. Same thing as camping out as students. When the University gets involved, things get ruined.Sadly the white out game lost luster when Big Noon was implemented. Even if we do slip in at 10-2 it is a recipe to lose a road first round playoff game and probably it won't be close.Strength of schedule means nothing. We go 11-1 or better and we are in. If we lose two
games we don’t deserve to be in. There is exactly one team on our schedule with more talent. This is a veteran, talent-laden team with a 5 Star QB coming into his own. If Franklin doesn’t get in this year, he never will.
