I just picked up the local Podunk paper and read about a guy who was arrested for speeding, eluding the cops, drug possession- the usual stuff. The article goes on to state that his license has been suspended 26 times. What possible explanation can there be for this guy not having been in jail already?

Must have attended the LJ Scott Driving School?!

Roads are dangerous because people are stupid. Go to Wal Mart. It doesn't matter where or what time of day. People watch. Understand that you are sharing the roads every day with the people you see. Complete this exercise, then come back here and convince me it's not a miracle you're alive.

Saw a car in front of us which was sitting at a red light - sitting- and just went right through it. Not getting an easier. Drugs, drink, stupidity- take your pick.

Yesterday on a two lane highway there was someone in the left lane with noone in front of them.
I slowly advanced towards them and gently flicked my high beams. Just once, to ask them to pull over to the right.

They did not. So, I was forced to pass on the right. I then moved over to the left lane to pass some other cars.

Original car decides to turn on high beams and tailgate me the next 15 minutes.

This is why our roads are so dangerous. Lack of courtesy. Way too many people with lastwhateveritis. People don't know left lane pass right lane slow.

totally agree. to me, it is a wonder it is as safe as it is when you spend time at the, as you say, local walmart. An hour later you are doing 65mph on the surekill with four feet of eachother.

PLus I dont know how some of these 'driving school' instructors get hired. I have seen many of them in their driving school cars on the road driving all over the place, and no it was not the 16 year old driving, it was the instructor by themselves in the car.

I went there and all I saw were a lot of people looking at me and shaking their heads:oops:

The average driver is an idiot, as any long time motorcyclist will tell you. But we can't even get the worst of them off the road, so what hope is there for any improvement?

Road rage is everywhere, and the mook who tailgates you or your wife and blasts his horn
/flashes his lights could have a gun.
On a lighter note, what’s the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine?
A porcupine has pricks on the outside.

The problem is selective enforcement of traffic laws. Few people use their turn signals, turns on lights in inclement weather, obey posted signs......and the worst are people that race up to pass on the shoulder...and they have kids in the car. Amazing that police will ticket you for not wearing a seatbelt but not for dangerous acts that can potentially hurt others.

Because the legislature sets the grading of the offense for crime and vehicle code violations and unless you are DUI suspended there is not significant jail time associated with a driving under suspension offense because the grading is low on the scale.

So a car doing 90-100 came up me and flicked his lights and got on my bumper. As I was doing 75. I slammed on my breaks and he (they) slid into the median.

That is a good story. Not sure how it is related to my story but whatever makes you happy.

I suggest in the future you simply pull over to the slow lane.

It didnt. Maybe the ****er shouldnt be doing almost double the 55. I'm not going to pull behind slower traffic when I'm in a line. Or do you suggest I pull under an 18 wheeler? To my right. Or in your mind is the almost triple digit driver the safe one?

I suggest you avoid roid raging.

This is sort of the point of my original post. Angry drivers make things unsafe.

As long as they keep him driving, they can continue to fine him for reckless driving. Why put him in jail and lose a customer?

Funny thing is, there is actually truth in this. The dirty little secret is that traffic enforcement in many places is more about revenue than it is about saving lives.

We just drove I-81 through Virginia and there is just an astonishing number of speed traps running between Wythville and Christiansburg -- about 40 miles. In places there was a trooper almost every mile. Probably 10x the density that you find in Northern Va.

Why the difference? I know two things -- 1) I-81 in Wytheville is no more safe or dangerous than I-81 in Harrisonburg or Winchester. and 2) Jobs are a lot harder to find in southwest Va. and trooper jobs -- they pay 80k with OT, and have really good benefits. A barracks full of troopers is essentially pork that can be delivered by a well placed state senator. But once the troopers are there, they have to earn their keep. At $200-$500 per ticket, a trooper can take in many thousands of dollars in a shift -- money that is split between the state and local jurisdictions.

Lucky he did not rear end you and damage your vehicle and potentially harm you.

There is a movement to get non-violent drug dealers out of prisons. I’m sure judges/prosecutors would get an earful if people are being sent to prison for traffic violations (no matter how justifiable).

So, if he crosses the median and hits a family head on, you are good with that. No. I gotta say you are part of the problem.
